Download or read book Modelling Links Between Canadian Trade and Foreign Direct Investment written by Walid Hejazi and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 1999 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper measures the impact of outward foreign direct investment (FDI) on Canadian exports. It uses a gravity model to measure the link between outward Canadian FDI and Canadian exports on a bilateral basis to 35 countries over the 1970-1996 period. The paper begins with a literature review. It then provides a description of the data, including a discussion of the aggregate data as well as the industrial distribution of Canada's trade and FDI. It examines the theoretical links between trade and FDI and provides empirical estimates of these links. Finally, it examines the possible welfare effects of outward FDI.

Book Synopsis Community Rights and Corporate Responsibility by : Liisa North
Download or read book Community Rights and Corporate Responsibility written by Liisa North and published by Between The Lines. This book was released on 2006 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian mining activity in Latin America has exploded over the past decade and a half. Investors have responded to neoliberal policies of deregulation, privatization, state-downsizing, and export promotion encouraged by leading capitalist nations and international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The result, predictably, has been sharp conflicts between the communities affected by mining and their advocates on one side, and the transnational mining companies supported by the local state and the Canadian government on the other. This collection, the most comprehensive in the English-language to date, investigates these conflicts in Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Contributors address the related sustainable development, community, corporate, legal, and social issues. A valuable contribution to Latin American development studies, this collection will prove of interest to students and specialists in the field, journalists, NGOs, and policymakers.
Book Synopsis Trade Competitiveness of the Middle East and North Africa by : Jos R. L pez-C lix
Download or read book Trade Competitiveness of the Middle East and North Africa written by Jos R. L pez-C lix and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, four major developments in global economic integration have shaped trade policy and the economic performance of countries within the Middle East and North Africa region: the emergence of global supply chains, the growth of trade in services, the rise of China and India as major international trading powers, and regional integration. These developments, along with the labor and natural resource endowments of particular countries (some are resource-poor but labor-abundant, some resource-rich and labor-abundant, and some resource-rich and labor-importing), have influenced export diversification outcomes across the region. Yet these countries may not be taking full advantage of all of the opportunities the four new trends offer to them. 'Trade Competitiveness of the Middle East and North Africa: Policies for Export Diversification' examines the region's trade policy agendas and their results by focusing on the countries' response to these four key developments in international trade. As the region recovers from the global financial and economic crises, the book identifies reforms that could allow countries to further strengthen global production networks, benefit more from trade in services, better compete in external markets to face the rise of China and India, and reach the full potential of regional integration. If thoroughly implemented, especially by oil exporters, all of these reforms could help boost growth and job creation in the region.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers examines key trends in the internationalisation of employment, drawing on the proceedings of an ILO conference held in Annecy, France in April 2005. The papers focus on three related issues: the impacts of trade and investment abroad, including the offshoring of production of goods and services, and effects on the winners and losers in terms of employment; adjustment methods for coping with the short and medium term problems related to the globalisation of employment; and the importance of international instruments to help ensure a level playing field in trade and promote development, drawing on established rights and international labour standards.

Book Synopsis France in the South Pacific by : Denise Fisher
Download or read book France in the South Pacific written by Denise Fisher and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France is a Pacific power, with three territories, a military presence, and extensive investments. Once seen by many as a colonial interloper in the South Pacific, by the early 2000s, after it ended nuclear testing in French Polynesia and negotiated transitional Accords responding to independence demands in New Caledonia, France seems to have become generally accepted as a regional partner, even if its efforts concentrate on its own territories rather than the independent island states. But Frances future in the region has yet to be secured. By 2014 it is to have handed over a set of agreed autonomies to the New Caledonian government, before an independence referendum process begins. Past experience suggests that a final resolution of the status of New Caledonia will be divisive and could lead once again to violent confrontations. In French Polynesia, calls continue for independence and for treatment under UN decolonisation procedures, which France opposes. Other island leaders are watching, so far putting faith in the Noumea Accord, but wary of the final stages. The issues and possible solutions are more complex than the French Pacific island population of 515,000 would suggest. Combining historical background with political and economic analysis, this comprehensive study offers vital insight into the intricate history -- and problematic future -- of several of Australias key neighbours in the Pacific and to the priorities and options of the European country that still rules them. It is aimed at policy-makers, scholars, journalists, businesspeople, and others who want to familiarise themselves with the issues as Frances role in the region is redefined in the years to come.

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment and Market Framework Policies written by Ronald Hirshhorn and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 1996 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper contributes to the broader examination of liberalization within APEC. It complements the review paper on competition policy prepared by New Zealand last year and the subsequent discussions that took place at the Competition Policy Seminar held in Auckland in July 1995. It is relevant to a number of issues in the work plan of the Economic Committee of APEC, in particular he proposed research on the links between technology and foreign investment. The intent of this paper is to inform the dialogue among APEC members by providing a conceptual approach that directs attention to some important issues with respect to framework policies in general, and to competition and intellectual policies in particular. As such, it does not contain specific recommendations.

The goal of the book is to move beyond the status quo debates about 'structural adjustment' and to look at all the public and civic institutions which are likely to play a critical role if Africa is to overcome its economic crisis.
