Download or read book The Explosion of Life Forms written by and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the essential characteristics of living beings is the explosion of variety in their forms that is intrinsically linked to the diversity of the environments they have adapted to. This book, the result of collaboration between international specialists, analyzes the multiplicity of these morphologies. It explores the origin of forms, their role in defining living things, and the relationship between form and function. It exposes the role of genes and epigenetics and examines the forms of bacteria, protists and plants. The Explosion of Life Forms also studies the memory of animals and their sensory processes, the forms of robots (built in the image of living things), and medical technologies aimed at restoring damaged living forms. Finally, this work questions a common principle of construction in the diversity of forms, as well as the idea of an abandonment of the form, a possible hidden defect of some modern philosophies.

Book Synopsis Lacan and Cassirer by : Antoine Mooij
Download or read book Lacan and Cassirer written by Antoine Mooij and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neo-Kantian philosopher Cassirer and the psychoanalyst Lacan are two key figures in the so-called medial turn in philosophy: the notion that any form of access to reality is mediated by symbols (images, words, signifiers). This explains why the theories of both philosophers merit a description in their own unique idioms, as well as having their respective basic tenets compared. It will be argued that, rather surprisingly, these tenets turn out be complementary - actually correcting each other – based on their shared notion of man as an animal symbolicum. Its fruitfulness will be substantiated for a limited number of topics within the humanities: perception, language, politics and ethics, and mental disorder, all to be considered from this perspective.
Book Synopsis Las almas heridas by : Boris Cyrulnik
Download or read book Las almas heridas written by Boris Cyrulnik and published by Editorial GEDISA. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Words for Odours by : Melissa Barkat-Defradas
Download or read book Words for Odours written by Melissa Barkat-Defradas and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the human sense of smell has long been considered underdeveloped, there is, nonetheless, a growing body of literature to attest to its remarkable importance in human behaviour. However, there has been very little work conducted in linguistics, which is all the more regrettable as economic globalization has made it increasingly useful to communicate on odours in a variety of domains such as the wine and perfume industries. This volume brings together a number of studies on how olfactory experiences are verbalized, applying both pragmatic and theoretical approaches to better understanding the different strategies speakers use to talk of odours. Four major themes are investigated here. Part I (From Olfactory Perception to Verbalisation) examines the various, complex cognitive operations implemented in the process of olfactory perception. Explorations of recollection processes, also crucial for odour verbalization, provide important insights into how cultural conditions contribute to shaping olfactory memories. Part II (Categories and Hedonic Valence) focuses on how speakers circumvent paucity in vocabulary to describe odours in a variety of ways. Sorting operations make it possible to either select an appropriate linguistic label for a given odour or to compensate for the lack thereof by using consistent descriptions. Indeed, although such cognitive operations are influenced by a subject’s environment, cultural representations and goals, the contributions to this section show that hedonic value is crucial for categorizing odours. Part III (Lexical and Cultural Variation) illustrates that some languages spoken on the African continent (such as the Arabic and Bantu languages) are relatively rich in their olfactory lexicon, thereby revealing the greater attention paid to odours in these societies. That being said, such relative richness or paucity can be modulated through a variety of mechanisms which shape the linguistic output, as exemplified in Part IV (Putting Odours into Words), where the olfactory lexicons of two Indo-European languages (French and Greek) are analysed from a comparative perspective.

Book Synopsis Lucian of Samosata, Greek Writer and Roman Citizen by : Francesca Mestre
Download or read book Lucian of Samosata, Greek Writer and Roman Citizen written by Francesca Mestre and published by Edicions Universitat Barcelona. This book was released on 2010 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucian was a man of letters and thinker who stood at the meeting point of three cultures: the Oriental culture of the Roman province of Syria; Greek culture as a result of his own background and the cultural tradition of the education he had received; and Roman culture, since in his lifetime it was Rome that exercised political power and, even though it adopted Greek culture as its own, it still made a clear contribution to this world. This three-faceted cultural outlook to Lucian of Samosata is of great interest for the study of the Roman Empire, with all its implications for the coexistence of peoples, for preserving identities, for creating or recreating identifying traits, some of which separated peoples while others brought them together when faced with alien forces, as well as for fusion, osmosis and syncretism. Moreover, this ample series of data provides us with information not only about cultural aspects, but also as regards social behaviour, ways of exercising and understanding political power, customs, religion, spectacles and celebrations..The book is divided into two sections, one focusing on Lucian as a writer, and one dealing with Lucian as a citizen of the Empire.

Book Synopsis Cultures nationales et identité communautaire by : Marloes Beers
Download or read book Cultures nationales et identité communautaire written by Marloes Beers and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The issue of a common European identity has been the subject of academic research from diverse perspectives. This book approaches the theme of European identity through the interpretive lens of both European public space and the experience of living together. Young scholars in the field of European studies identify instruments for the development of a European identity and analyse their characteristics and shortcomings. These proceedings offer a spectrum of perspectives on the development of a European identity.
