Book Synopsis The Spread of Almost Simple Classical Groups by : Scott Harper
Download or read book The Spread of Almost Simple Classical Groups written by Scott Harper and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph studies generating sets of almost simple classical groups, by bounding the spread of these groups. Guralnick and Kantor resolved a 1962 question of Steinberg by proving that in a finite simple group, every nontrivial element belongs to a generating pair. Groups with this property are said to be 3/2-generated. Breuer, Guralnick and Kantor conjectured that a finite group is 3/2-generated if and only if every proper quotient is cyclic. We prove a strong version of this conjecture for almost simple classical groups, by bounding the spread of these groups. This involves analysing the automorphisms, fixed point ratios and subgroup structure of almost simple classical groups, so the first half of this monograph is dedicated to these general topics. In particular, we give a general exposition of Shintani descent. This monograph will interest researchers in group generation, but the opening chapters also serve as a general introduction to the almost simple classical groups.
Book Synopsis New Directions in Locally Compact Groups by : Pierre-Emmanuel Caprace
Download or read book New Directions in Locally Compact Groups written by Pierre-Emmanuel Caprace and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of expository articles by a range of established experts and newer researchers provides an overview of the recent developments in the theory of locally compact groups. It includes introductory articles on totally disconnected locally compact groups, profinite groups, p-adic Lie groups and the metric geometry of locally compact groups. Concrete examples, including groups acting on trees and Neretin groups, are discussed in detail. An outline of the emerging structure theory of locally compact groups beyond the connected case is presented through three complementary approaches: Willis' theory of the scale function, global decompositions by means of subnormal series, and the local approach relying on the structure lattice. An introduction to lattices, invariant random subgroups and L2-invariants, and a brief account of the Burger–Mozes construction of simple lattices are also included. A final chapter collects various problems suggesting future research directions.

Book Synopsis Bounded Cohomology and Simplicial Volume by : Caterina Campagnolo
Download or read book Bounded Cohomology and Simplicial Volume written by Caterina Campagnolo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their introduction by Gromov in the 1980s, the study of bounded cohomology and simplicial volume has developed into an active field connected to geometry and group theory. This monograph, arising from a learning seminar for young researchers working in the area, provides a collection of different perspectives on the subject, both classical and recent. The book's introduction presents the main definitions of the theories of bounded cohomology and simplicial volume, outlines their history, and explains their principal motivations and applications. Individual chapters then present different aspects of the theory, with a focus on examples. Detailed references to foundational papers and the latest research are given for readers wishing to dig deeper. The prerequisites are only basic knowledge of classical algebraic topology and of group theory, and the presentations are gentle and informal in order to be accessible to beginning graduate students wanting to enter this lively and topical field.

Book Synopsis Exercises in Cellular Automata and Groups by : Tullio Ceccherini-Silberstein
Download or read book Exercises in Cellular Automata and Groups written by Tullio Ceccherini-Silberstein and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book complements the authors’ monograph Cellular Automata and Groups [CAG] (Springer Monographs in Mathematics). It consists of more than 600 fully solved exercises in symbolic dynamics and geometric group theory with connections to geometry and topology, ring and module theory, automata theory and theoretical computer science. Each solution is detailed and entirely self-contained, in the sense that it only requires a standard undergraduate-level background in abstract algebra and general topology, together with results established in [CAG] and in previous exercises. It includes a wealth of gradually worked out examples and counterexamples presented here for the first time in textbook form. Additional comments provide some historical and bibliographical information, including an account of related recent developments and suggestions for further reading. The eight-chapter division from [CAG] is maintained. Each chapter begins with a summary of the main definitions and results contained in the corresponding chapter of [CAG]. The book is suitable either for classroom or individual use. Foreword by Rostislav I. Grigorchuk
