Book excerpt: The OICW is envisioned to be a lightweight, shoulder-fired weapon having a dual munitions capability and an advanced day/night fire control. The OICW is expected to provide substantial improvements in lethality over the predecessor rifle and carbine families of weapons. The Office of the Program Manager for Small Arms assessed the OICW Advanced Technology Demonstration process and program progress in 1998 and concluded the ATD process did not accomplish/address the actions that are necessary prior to entering engineering and manufacturing development. This thesis examines how the ATD process could be improved to better improve similar, subsequent weapon systems from inculcating risk that endangers the program.

Book excerpt: Rifle Ammunition (commonly shortened to ammo) is propellant and projectile, or broadly anything that can be used in combat and fired from a rifled firearm. The purpose of ammunition is to project force against a selected target. However, the nature of ammunition use also includes delivery or combat supporting munitions such as pyrotechnic or incendiary compounds. Since the design of the cartridge, the meaning has been transferred to the assembly of a projectile and its propellant in a single package. Ammunition involves the application of fire to targets, general use of weapons by personnel, explosives and propellants, cartridge systems, high explosive projectiles (HE), warheads, shaped charge forms of attack on armour and aircraft, carrier projectiles, fuzes, mortar ammunition, small arms ammunition, grenades, mines, pyrotechnics, improved conventional munitions, and terminally guided munition. A "round" is a term synonymous with a single cartridge containing a projectile, propellant, primer and casing. This book focuses on the rifle cartridge, its history, dimensions, construction, assembly and use. This volume 2 of 2 focuses on 150 Cartridges larger than 50 cal. Including Metric Cartridges. You can purchase volume 1 which discusses 132 rounds under 39 caliber at https: //www.createspace.com/ 6098488.

Jones and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional ammunition management is becoming more centralized. The Army, as the Single Manager for Conventional Ammunition, is developing the Defense Standard Ammunition Computer System (DSACS) to manage wholesale conventional inventories for all Military Departments. The unclassified DSACS is intended to interface with existing service ammunition systems. The Air Force is developing the Combat Ammunition System (CAS), a Secret system which will reside within the World Wide Military Command and Control System (WWMCCS) to manage Air Force wholesale and retail munitions worldwide. To be effective each system must exchange information on a real-time basis, however, a suitable interface has not been developed. This thesis used expert opinion to determine the best method of interface. Recommendations were: (1) Air Force and Army should reevaluate their interface requirements for CAS and DSACS. (2) both services should initiate research in multilevel secure computer technology, (3) the RAP and SCOMP should be studied carefully by both services. Keywords: Secure communications; Computer applications; Access command and control system; Inventory control; Ammunition.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations in Afghanistan frequently require United States ground forces to engage and destroy the enemy at ranges beyond 300 meters. These operations occur in rugged terrain and in situations where traditional supporting fires are limited due to range or risk of collateral damage. With these limitations, the infantry in Afghanistan require a precise, lethal fire capability that exists only in a properly trained and equipped infantryman. While the infantryman is ideally suited for combat in Afghanistan, his current weapons, doctrine, and marksmanship training do not provide a precise, lethal fire capability to 500 meters and are therefore inappropriate. Comments from returning non-commissioned officers and officers reveal that about fifty percent of engagements occur past 300 meters. The enemy tactics are to engage United States forces from high ground with medium and heavy weapons, often including mortars, knowing that we are restricted by our equipment limitations and the inability of our overburdened soldiers to maneuver at elevations exceeding 6000 feet. Current equipment, training, and doctrine are optimized for engagements under 300 meters and on level terrain There are several ways to extend the lethality of the infantry. A more effective 5.56-mm bullet can be designed which provides enhanced terminal performance out to 500 meters. A better option to increase incapacitation is to adopt a larger caliber cartridge, which will function using components of the M16/M4. The 2006 study by the Joint Service Wound Ballistics-Integrated Product Team discovered that the ideal caliber seems to be between 6.5 and 7-mm. This was also the general conclusion of all military ballistics studies since the end of World War I.

Weapons not often seen on the battlefield can prove useful, even indispensible, in an urban setting. This expert reference guide examines in detail the most successful small arms in use and how changes in warfare have affected how those weapons are used and have transformed the small arms industry. Professional soldiers, law enforcement officers and students and researchers of small arms will gain a working knowledge of the most common and successful urban combat weapons (including some currently in development).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A soldier's “web gear” is as important to his ability to live and fight on the battlefield as are his clothing and weapons. In World War II the US Army issued equipment items that had originated in 1910, though modified and augmented in the 1920s and 1930s, and again during the war itself as a result of combat experience. This book describes and illustrates the great majority of the personal equipment provided for infantry riflemen, GIs armed with other weapons and their ammunition-bearers, officers, and medics. In addition to the web gear itself it covers canteens, mess kit, and first aid items; weapons-related and other specialist items; the long struggle to produce a practical backpack; bivouac and shelter gear, and the most commonly carried tools. The text also explains the basics of materials, colors, markings, nomenclature, and weights for the guidance of collectors. It is illustrated with wartime photos and color close-ups, and the wide-ranging color plates specially prepared for this book offer more than 130 images.
