Twelve insightful and original essays about Paul Gauguin and Polynesia, written by eminent scholars in the field of art history and ethnology, present the development of Polynesian art before and after Gauguin's stay in Polynesia at the end of the 19th century. The book presents over 60 works by Paul Gauguin, fully revealing the extent of the influence of Polynesian art and culture on his work, while also highlighting more than 60 works from the Pacific that exemplify the dynamic exchanges of Pacific Island peoples with Europeans throughout the 19th century."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: WORKBOOK WITH CD ENCLOSED. FULL COLOR. MUSIC AND ART EDUCATION. Gauguin felt that his approach to color the pinks beside purple or yellows near orange had nothing to do with Naturalism or Impressionism, but everything to do with music. He thought like a composer, and he knew it. When critics complained that Gauguins paintings lacked perspective, seemed flat, and that his colors were unnatural, the artist turned to music to defend himself. The journalist Eugène Tardieu asked Gauguin why he painted red dogs and pink skies, and Gauguin replied, "I do it purposefully! Its like music. I take an idea from life and arrange lines and colors to get symphonies and harmonies. I do not paint mere representations of reality. My paintings should make you think the way music does simply through the mysterious affinities, the connections, that exist between our minds and arrangements of colors and lines." Gauguin felt that if people would only allow artists the same freedom from realism that musicians naturally enjoy, they would understand his work. He wrote in his journal, "Musicians live in a special world of sounds and harmonies. Painting should be special, too. The sister art to music, painting lives on forms and colors. Color, like music, is vibration." Together, the music and book of Red Dogs and Pink Skies celebrate not only Gauguins paintings and ideas about art and music, but also the relationship of painting to music generally. The design of the book from the decorative borders and backgrounds to the humorous images are based on details and elements of Gauguins own work. The music was inspired by "listening" to the paintings. For Gauguin himself said, "Color is the language of the listening eye."

Book excerpt: "In the spring of 1891, Paul Gauguin left France on his first journey to Tahiti. During his stay there, he achieved an unprecedented intensification of color and formal simplicity in his painting. In the more than 200 works he produced in the South Pacific, Gauguin was primarily concerned with expressing his own condition and his ideas about the world, including his hopes for a reconciliation between civilization and nature, culture and primitivism. This is particularly clear in his book Noa Noa, which he wrote and illustrated to provide his audience in far-off Paris with an introduction to his paintings." "Eckhard Hollmann presents an exciting view of Paul Gauguin as a rebel and outsider in art, not forgetting the French painter's impressive self-dramatizations, the sole purpose of which was to establish a socially respected position for the artist. An analysis of Gauguin's paintings, his living conditions, and his writings casts fresh light on his significance as the "prophet of a new form of art" and pioneer of modernism."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
