Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to explore how the athletic trainer and coach relationship impacts the social support provided to Division I intercollegiate student--athletes. Through a qualitative-case study design, eleven participants were recruited and interviewed for the study. Criterion for inclusion included all NCAA sports at the university. This included males and females in various years of school and sport. After the completion of data analysis, four main themes were developed. These themes included social support, positive impact, negative impact, and unforeseen findings. Seven of the eleven student--athletes reported feeling that there was a direct relationship between the athletic trainer and coach and the social support received. This filled the gap in the literature and provided a basis for future research. The findings show how a positive communicative relationship allows for student--athletes to not only receive more social support but to create more enjoyable experiences. The research highlighted the importance of social support in the lives of student--athletes as it influenced both physical and mental well-being. Athletic departments should understand the impact the athletic trainer and coach relationship has not only on student--athletes but the dynamic of an athletic team or department. Future considerations should include prioritizing effective communication and making social support a topic of discussion within athletics.

Book excerpt: Resilience in sport has been defined as "the role of mental processes and behavior in promoting personal assets and protecting an individual from the potential negative effect of stressors" (Fletcher & Sarkar, 2012, p. 675). Fletcher and Sarkar's (2012) found that various psychological factors were indicative of athlete resilience such as achievement motivation, social support, focus, confidence, and positive personality. To date, sport psychology researchers have dominantly examined resilience as an individual construct (e.g., Galli & Vealey, 2008; Fletcher & Sarkar; Wagstaff, Sarkar, Davidson, & Fletcher, 2016). However, it is also important to consider how athlete resilience might develop and operate in relationships with important others (e.g., coach). Narrative inquiry (Smith & Sparkes, 2009) was used in this study to explore the stories of seven NCAA Division I student-athletes' lived experiences of how the coach-athlete relationship influenced their ability to be resilient through major stress. Semi-structured interviews were conducted that asked participants about their respective coach-athlete relationship, how power and sociocultural factors influenced this relationship, and in turn, influenced student-athlete resilience. Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis was used for data analysis, which revealed the following themes: (a) Student-athlete core resilience, (b) The W.O.A.T., (c) The G.O.A.T., (d) W.O.AT. coach behaviors, (e) G.O.A.T. coach behaviors, (f) The W.O.A.T., the G.O.A.T., and student-athlete resilience, (g) The effect of coach major stress on student-athlete resilience, and (h) The relational shift: From bad to better, good to great. It is hoped that the findings of this study will be used as a powerful method from which coaches can emotionally connect with the participants' stories in order to better understand how they might operate within the coach-athlete relationship to influence student-athlete resilience.

Book excerpt: "Athletic trainers are often a significant source of support for athletes coping with psychosocial issues, both in terms of directly assisting the athlete through psychosocial interventions (e.g., goal setting, motivations) and offering access to other resources (i.e., mental health counseling referrals), as well as providing various types of social support (Barefield & McCallister, 1997; Robbins & Rosenfeld, 2001; Tracey, 2008). Moreover, athletic training education includes a specific content area, Psychosocial Strategies and Referral, to prepare students to meet the athletes' needs. Athletic trainers (ATs) have expressed an interest in, and increasing acceptance of, the use of psychological skills with athletes who are injured (Clement, Granquist & Arvenin-Barrow, 2013; Cramer Roh & Perna, 2000; Hamson-Utley, Martin & Walters, 2008; Larson, Starky & Zaichowsky, 1996). However, ATs often feel underprepared to assist athletes through the use of psychological skills (Stiller-Ostrowski & Ostrowski, 2009; Moulton, Molstad, & Turner, 1997; Misasi, Davis, Morin, & Stockman, 1996). This study aims to further understand the gap between required athletic training education and feelings of lack of preparedness on behalf of athletic training students. To that end, athletic training Program Directors, Preceptors, and Students were surveyed regarding five specific psychosocial competencies. It was found that while there was no difference in how Program Directors value the selected competencies, there was differentiation among both Preceptors and Students. Students value, feel prepared to use, and are more likely to use competencies PS6, PS7 and PS8, but not PS9 or PS10. Preceptors also valued PS9 and PS10 the least. For Preceptors, modeling the behavior was the strongest predictor of competency value. Multiple regressions were run to determine predictors of student values, preparedness, and likelihood of use. Results were inconsistent across competencies, however where the competency is taught and the value of the Program Director for that competency emerged the most often as significant predictors. Lastly, a regression was run to predict students' likelihood of using a competency from value and preparedness. Across all competencies, value and preparedness were significantly predictive of likelihood of use, and in only one competency was value the only predictor. Results indicate that more research is necessary to understand student values of competencies as well as the influence of clinical instructors on educational experiences. However, denial, depression, anger, anxiety, and fear can also occur as a result of injury. Although most athletic trainers are well prepared to care for the physical ailments associated with injury, some are much less adept at designing rehabilitation and treatment programs aimed at addressing psychological reactions. The potential for helping athletic trainers recognize both the physical and psychological ramifications of injury begins with academic preparation. Currently, undergraduate athletic training students are expected to complete course work that addresses twenty different subject matter areas. Yet, only one of the twenty subject matter areas addresses the psychological component of health care. This apparent under-representation of psychosocial intervention in the curricular preparation of athletic trainers may not adequately address the complex nature of injury and its effect on student-athletes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived coaching behaviors and the changes that occur in college athletes' perceptions of team cohesion and collective efficacy during a season. Additionally, the strength and direction of the relationship between collective efficacy and team cohesion was tested. To test these relationships, a series of questionnaires were administered to 180 collegiate athletes in the early season and late season. Multivariate multiple regression analyses indicated that increases in athletes' perceptions of team cohesion and collective efficacy over the season were positively correlated with perceptions of their coach exhibiting higher levels of democratic behavior, training and instruction, social support, positive feedback (LSS), and positive and informational feedback (CFQ) and lower levels of autocratic behaviors, punishment-oriented feedback, and non-reinforcement/ignoring mistakes. A significant relationship was also found between team cohesion and collective efficacy at the early season and especially at the late season measurement.

The prevalence rate for 18-25-years-olds is 8.7% in 12 months. Mental health conditions are treatable, yet many people do not seek professional help. Seeking help from a professional source is particularly important for preventing, early detection, treatment, and recovery from mental health conditions. Purpose: The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to demonstrate the prevalence of depression, explore student-athletes attitudes towards seeking mental health help, understand what factors may influence help-seeking behaviors, and explore the athlete's perceptions of the role that athletic trainers play in the assessment and referral process. Methods: An exploratory, concurrent mixed methods design was used. Survey data from the ATSPPH-SF and PHQ-9 were collected from collegiate student-athletes. A phenomenological approach will guide the qualitative research process. Semi-structured interviews will be audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed using an interpretive thematic analytical approach. Study Participants: National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes participating at the Divsion III (DIII) level. Results: The prevalence of depression was almost 42% in the study population. There was no relationship between PHQ-9 scores and sex. Attitudes towards seeking help were generally positive. Females tend to have more favorable attitudes than males, but this finding was not statistically significant. There was no relationhship between PHQ-9 scores and ATSPPH-SF scores. Barriers to help-seeking included perceived seriousness, stigma, lack of time, accessibility, prefer to handle issues on own, and cost. Facilitators to help-seeking included perceived and nee-problems that were serious enough to warrant help and a supportive network. Clinical Importance: As we continue to address the mental health crisis, it is imperative to understand what prevents student-athletes from seeking professional psychological help and develop supportive programs to help them overcome these barriers. Certified athletic trainers, coaches, and other athletic personel need to understand the seriousness of untreated mental health conditions and be educated to recognize when an athlete may be struggling with issues beyond their control. Knowing when to refer a student-athlete to a professional is essential in preventing potential unnecessary and irreversible consequences.
