Book excerpt: The history of financial assistance to students in high schools, colleges, and universities in this country underlies what the authors of this book see as a changing educational philosophy. From the founding of Harvard College in 1636, and its effort to provide employment for needy students, to money allocations made to land-grant colleges after the Civil War, and to the recent federal enactments, it is clear that there has been a shift from the concept of financial aid for only needy students to the concept of work-study programs as an integral part of the total educational process. This view is supported by the fact of current large federal appropriations for the development of such programs and by the fact that co-operative work-study programs have become a part of academic planning. A measure of the importance of this study may be derived from these figures: of the 7.6 million students in American universities and colleges at the present time, one in four participates in federally-financed aid programs; of the 2,242 million dollars in student aid granted in 1967, 70 percent came from the federal government in the form of work-study programs, outright grants, loans, and scholarships; and in large universities, from one-fourth to one-half of all students receive some sort of financial assistance. An important part of this work are the descriptions of work-study programs in operation in various universities and colleges. In addition, the authors' conclusions and recommendations for structuring work-study programs will be valuable to administrators, counselors, and educators in general.

In addition to reviewing evidence on the effectiveness of vocational coursework, the authors analyse programmes involving students who study and work simultaneously, including co-operative education, youth apprenticeship and school-based enterprise.; Chapters deal with the problems encountered in the school-to-work transition: the preparation necessary not only for this transition but for changes encountered when jobs end abruptly, and issues covered include combining school-based and work-based learning and teaching and linking secondary with post- secondary education. Research on programmes involving students simultaneously working and at school, including non-school-supervised employment is also covered, as is co-operative education, which places students in jobs related to their fields of study. The traditional elements of post-school education and training are discussed together with an investigation into newer approaches including career academics and career magnet schools and programmes bridging secondary and post secondary education. Additionally, selected studies of programmes for out- of-school youth are reviewed.; To conclude, the authors consider new school-to-work systems and whether specially designed programmes for the "non-college-bound" students would be stigmatised as second best, or if an alternative programme could maintain an option for students to attend four year colleges and universities, the latter making the design and operation of school-to-work systems more difficult. Of interest to administrators, teachers, policy makers, analysts and employers, the findings in this book will shed light on the viability of new school-to- work initiatives currently being implemented in the UK, Europe and USA.

Book excerpt: "Threshold Concepts in Practice brings together fifty researchers from sixteen countries and a wide variety of disciplines to analyse their teaching practice, and the learning experiences of their students, through the lens of the Threshold Concepts Framework. In any discipline, there are certain concepts – the ‘jewels in the curriculum’ – whose acquisition is akin to passing through a portal. Learners enter new conceptual (and often affective) territory. Previously inaccessible ways of thinking or practising come into view, without which they cannot progress, and which offer a transformed internal view of subject landscape, or even world view. These conceptual gateways are integrative, exposing the previously hidden interrelatedness of ideas, and are irreversible. However they frequently present troublesome knowledge and are often points at which students become stuck. Difficulty in understanding may leave the learner in a ‘liminal’ state of transition, a ‘betwixt and between’ space of knowing and not knowing, where understanding can approximate to a form of mimicry. Learners navigating such spaces report a sense of uncertainty, ambiguity, paradox, anxiety, even chaos. The liminal space may equally be one of awe and wonderment. Thresholds research identifies these spaces as key transformational points, crucial to the learner’s development but where they can oscillate and remain for considerable periods. These spaces require not only conceptual but ontological and discursive shifts. This volume, the fourth in a tetralogy on Threshold Concepts, discusses student experiences, and the curriculum interventions of their teachers, in a range of disciplines and professional practices including medicine, law, engineering, architecture and military education.
