Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collection of Esoteric Writings At noon on that day, he said his Guru called him to come, he was going to die, he was now about beginning his tapas mystical invocations and he did not wish to be disturbed. From that time on, he spoke to no one. When he died, a great star fell from the firmament of Indian con temporary thought. Between Subba Row, H. P. Blavatsky, Damodar and myself there was a close friendship. He was chiefly instrumental in having us invited to visit Madras in 1882, and in inducing us to choose this city as the per manent Head-quarters of the Theosophical Society. Subba Row was in confidential understanding with us about Damodar's mystical pilgrimage towards the North, and more than a year after the latter crossed into Tibet, he wrote him about himself and his plans. Subba Row told me of this long ago, and reverted to the subject the other day at one of my visits to his sick-bed. A dis pate - due in a measure to third parties - which widened into a breach, arose between H. P. B. And himself about certain philosophical questions, but to the last he spoke of her, to us and to his family, in the old friendly way. When we last saw each other we had a long talk about esoteric philosophy, and he said that as soon as he could get out, he should come to Head - quarters and draft several metaphysical questions that he wished Mr. Fawcett to discuss with him in the T/zeosolvbist. His interest in our movement Was unabated to the last, he read the 27180301911t regularly and was a subscriber to H. P. B.'s Lucifer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Shines a floodlight on a topic that has been cloaked in obscurity . . . a landmark work in both intellectual history and political theory” (The Wall Street Journal). Philosophical esotericism—the practice of communicating one’s unorthodox thoughts “between the lines”—was a common practice until the end of the eighteenth century. Despite its long and well-documented history, however, esotericism is often dismissed today as a rare occurrence. But by ignoring esotericism, we risk cutting ourselves off from a full understanding of Western philosophical thought. Walking readers through both an ancient (Plato) and a modern (Machiavelli) esoteric work, Arthur M. Melzer explains what esotericism is—and is not. It relies not on secret codes, but simply on a more intensive use of familiar rhetorical techniques like metaphor, irony, and insinuation. Melzer explores the various motives that led thinkers in different times and places to engage in this strange practice, while also exploring the motives that lead more recent thinkers not only to dislike and avoid this practice but to deny its very existence. In the book’s final section, “A Beginner’s Guide to Esoteric Reading,” Melzer turns to how we might once again cultivate the long-forgotten art of reading esoteric works. The first comprehensive, book-length study of the history and theoretical basis of philosophical esotericism, Philosophy Between the Lines is “a treasure-house of insight and learning. It is that rare thing: an eye-opening book . . . By making the world before Enlightenment appear as strange as it truly was, [Melzer] makes our world stranger than we think it is” (George Kateb, Professor of Politics, Emeritus, at Princeton University). “Brilliant, pellucid, and meticulously researched.” —City Journal

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the Soul: A Sequel to Esoteric Buddhism There is something pathetic, for us who know better, in the altitude of mind of people who treat as matters of ribald incredulity the existence of faculties in daily use amongst some of us in connexion with the study, not merely of literary philosophy, but of special con ditions of existence. That other world from which, in the old phrase, no traveller returns, has been found accessible to travellers who are going backwards and forwards constantly, and in saying this, I am leaving entirely out of account communications from the next world purporting to come from those who have passed over to it finally. Book excerpt: "The Three Books of Occult Philosophy's vast store of magical lore has been so influential that occultists have been drawing upon it for the past five centuries. This classic work was first published in 1531, and translated into English in 1651, but it has never since been reprinted in its entirety. Now--for the first time in 500 years--editor Donald Tyson presents these writings as Agrippa intended them to appear: wholly complete and free from the hundreds of errors made in the original translation. The Three Books of Occult Philosophy is the most complete repository of pagan and Neo-platonic magic ever compiled. This book is packed with material you will not find elsewhere, including copious extracts on magic from obscure or lost works by Pythagoras, Pliny the Elder, Cicero, Ptolemy, Plato, Aristotle, and many other authorities. Donald Tyson's detailed annotations clarify difficult references and provide origins of quotations, even expanding upon them in many cases in order to make Agrippa's work more accessible to the modern reader. As well as providing extensive insight into the foundations of the Western Esoteric tradition, the Three Books of Occult Philosophy is the ultimate 'how-to' for magical workings. It describes how to work all manner of divinations and natural and ceremonial magic in such clear and useful detail that it is still the guide for modern techniques. And the extensive supplementary material--including biographical and geographical disctionaries and appendices--provides quick reference to many previously obscure matters in classical magic. The Three Books of Occult Philosophy is an essential reference tool for all students of the history of ideas and the occult tradition."--back cover.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Church of Christ, Exoteric and Esoteric The origin of the first appearance of these papers in the pages of Lucifer was to attempt to correct misconceptions. Writers of great ability and honesty were often found to postulate as Church doctrines things which had never been and never could be taught by the Church, though they might have been enunciated by persons ostensibly members of the Church, but over whom the Church could have no control; the false teaching and evil lives of professing Christians in all ages were ascribed to Christianity, which should be ascribed to professing Christians who were not really such. The evidences of this position are mostly in voluminous and somewhat difficult works, not easy of access to the generality, and hardly likely to be familiar to the average man who is not a member of the Church, while of manuals there are many, and few trustworthy, since they mostly seek to support a particular view, and are characterized rather by bold assertion and rhetorical disquisition than by a statement of evidence and logical deduction therefrom. To the bulk of non-Christians, or of Christians who are not members of the Church, it is hopeless to speak; but Theosophists by the mere fact of being such must hold that "There is no Religion higher than Truth." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Esoteric Christianity or the Lesser Mysteries The object of this book is to suggest cer tain lines of thought as to the deep truths underlying Christianity, truths generally overlooked, and only too often denied. The generous wish to Share with all what is precious, to spread broadcast priceless truths, to shut out none from the. Illumina tion of true knowledge, has resulted in a zeal without discretion that has vulgarised Christianity, and has presented its teachings in a form that often repels the heart and alienates the intellect. The command to preach the Gospel to every creature though admittedly of doubtful authenticity - has been interpreted as forbidding the teaching of the Gnosis to a few, and has apparently erased the less popular saying. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Esoteric Christianity and Mental Therapeutics Tms volume is designed to complete a series of works on the subject of Mental Therapeutics, the publication of which was commenced several years ago, and which was intended to give a view of the subject in its various aspects. It is hoped the book may be found acceptable and useful to those who are interested in the subject of which it treats. It contains a series of twelve lessons or lectures, which the author has given in a private way to a number of persons who were desirous of learning something of the philosophy and practice of the phrenopathic method of cure. In order that the information contained in the lectures might become more generally circulated, and meet the demands for instruo tion that are made upon the author, they are committed to the press. There is given in the brief compass of the volume a plain presentation of the principles that underlie the practice of the mental system of healing, so that any person of ordinary intelligence, who is moved by a desire to do good, may make a trial of those directions. The author has endeavored to present to the reader every principle which may be viewed as scientifically and experimen tally established, and that is of any practical value, and which it may be proper openly to promulgate to the world at large in the present state of the mind of man.
