Book excerpt: Structural Concrete examines the behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures under working load and ultimate load conditions. This eight-chapter text deals first with the analysis of concrete structures as a particular branch of structural mechanics. Other chapters explore the empirical methods and the practical design and detailing procedures. Considerable chapters describe the mechanical behavior of structural concrete, with a particular emphasis on the elastic behavior. The final chapters examine the behavior of continuous beams, frames, and slabs. These chapters also look into the models for structural concrete. This book is intended primarily to undergraduate civil engineering students.

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: This dissertation is an investigation into the behaviour of externally prestressed structures, focusing on bridge box girders, at the ultimate limit state. The main objective is the ductility and the tendon stress increase up to failure of externally prestressed structures. Their behaviour will be compared to internally prestressed structures. The dissertation may have valuable information for the first stages of the design process for medium span bridges as the study is concerned about the overall safety and efficiency of prestressed concrete bridges by the means of ductility. The aim is also to provide information about the tendon stress at failure, which is required for the detailed design. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prestressed concrete is widely used in the construction industry in buildings, bridges, and other structures. The new edition of this book provides up-to-date guidance on the detailed design of prestressed concrete structures according to the provisions of the latest preliminary version of Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures, DD ENV 1992-1-1: 1992. The emphasis throughout is on design - the problem of providing a structure to fulfil a given purpose - but fundamental concepts are also described in detail. All major topics are dealt with, including prestressed flat slabs, an important and growing application in the design of buildings. The text is illustrated throughout with worked examples and problems for further study. Examples are given of computer spreadsheets for typical design calculations. Prestressed Concrete Design will be a valuable guide to practising engineers, students and research workers.

It also covers the detailed engineering of the structural elements with prestressing forces in terms of analysis and design. Different systems of prestressing, losses in prestressing and evaluation of capacity of prestressed concrete sections in flexure, shear and torsion, the force flow due to prestressing at anchorage zones, the time dependent effects due to creep and shrinkage of materials are explained. The design of prestressed concrete elements is covered with a holistic concept. In case of indeterminate structures, the effect of prestressing while satisfying the compatibility conditions has been clearly explained. The necessary philosophy and the design procedures of partially prestressed elements have been specifically dealt with. Accepted National and International Code provisions for design of prestressed concrete elements under the effect of the various loads have been elaborately discussed with worked out examples.

Book excerpt: Behaviour of Building Structures Subjected to Progressive Collapse gives in-depth and up-to-date quantitative and numerical analysis of building structures against progressive collapse. It does so at various levels, including bare steel joints, composite joints and sub-assemblages and frames under quasi-static loading conditions. The book provides analysis of the force transfer mechanisms of composite structures and reinforced concrete structures, along with detailed numerical models that shed light on the effects of critical parameters on progressive collapse resistances. It includes direct design methods that take into account various collapse-resisting mechanisms. The collapse of the World Trade Center in New York has spurred extensive experimental study and numerical analysis of the structural behavior of buildings under progressive collapse scenarios. Although design guidelines have been published by governments, most are missing up-to-date numerical and experimental results, quantitative accounts of force transfer mechanisms, and numerical guidelines. - Offers in-depth analysis and numerical modeling for building structures against progressive collapse - Provides analysis of the force-transfer mechanisms of composite and reinforced concrete structures - Gives detailed numerical models that shed light on the effects of critical parameters on progressive resistances - Includes direct design methods that take into account various collapse resisting mechanisms - Offers a comprehensive reference for progressive collapse analysis and the design of building structures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete is an integral part of twenty-first century structural engineering, and an understanding of how to analyze and design concrete structures is a vital part of training as a structural engineer. With Eurocode legislation increasingly replacing British Standards, it’s also important to know how this affects the way you can work with concrete. Newly revised to Eurocode 2, this second edition retains the original’s emphasis on qualitative understanding of the overall behaviour of concrete structures. Now expanded, with a new chapter dedicated to case studies, worked examples, and exercise examples, it is an even more comprehensive guide to conceptual design, analysis, and detailed design of concrete structures. The book provides civil and structural engineering students with complete coverage of the analysis and design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Great emphasis is placed on developing a qualitative understanding of the overall behaviour of structures.

Book excerpt: Serviceability limit states are essential for appropriate function and durability of concrete structures. The attention is paid especially to the stress limitation, crack width analysis and deflection analysis. The document provides supplementary information to the fib Model Code 2010 (MC2010), where a limited space did not allow for a detailed description of individual procedures. The principles used in MC2010 in chapter 7.6 are explained in detail within this document. The stress analysis is focused on stresses in concrete and steel including the stress redistribution due to the long-term load and cracking of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete elements. Crack width analysis explains the mechanism of cracking under mechanical loading and due to deformation restraint. Cracks in prestressed concrete elements are also discussed. Deflection analyses with different levels of accuracy are described including the shear effects. Examples illustrate the practical application of rules defined in the MC2010 of individual serviceability limit states. Simplified and more general methods are used. An important part of the bulletin shows the development and extension of the serviceability limit states after publishing of the MC2010 and alternative approaches. Special attention is paid to deflections of prestressed concrete beams, shear effects on deflection, slenderness limits and influence of the concrete cover. The final part deals with an application of numerical simulations.

Book excerpt: These volumes contain the edited documents presented at the NATO-Sponsored Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Partial Pre8tre88ing, from Theory to Practice, held at the CEBTP Research Centre of Saint-Remy-Ies-Chevreuse, France, June 18-22, 1984. The workshop was a direct extension of the International Symposium on Nonlinearity and Continuity in Pre8tre88ed Concrete, organized by the editor at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada, July 4-6, 1983. The organization of the NATO-ARW on Partial Prestressing was prompted by the need to explain and reduce the wide dirrerences of expert oph:iipn· on the subject, which make more difficult the accep tance of partial prestressing by the profession at large. Specifically, the workshop attempted to: - produce a more unified picture of partial presetressing, by con fronting and, where possible, reconciling some conflicting American and European views on this subject; - bring theoretical advances on partial prestressing within the grasp of engineering practice; - provide the required background for developing some guidelines on the use of partial prestressing, in agreement with existing structural concrete standards. The five themes selected for the workshop agenda were: (1) Problems of Partially Prestressed Concrete (PPC). (2) Partially Prestressed Concrete Members: Static Loading. (3) PPC Members: Repeated and Dynamic Loadings. (4) Continuity in Partially Prestressed Concrete. (5) Practice of Partial Prestressing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 17 2 STRESS FIELDS FOR SIMPLE STRUCTURES 2. 1 INTRODUCTION In this chapter the behavior and strength of simple structures made of rein forced or prestressed concrete is investigated with the aid of stress fields. In particular, the webs and flanges of beams, simple walls, brackets, bracing beams and joints of frames are investigated. By this means, the majority of design cases are already covered. In reality, all structural components are three-dimensional. Here, however, components are considered either directly as two-dimensional plate elements (i. e. the plane stress condition with no variation of stress over the thickness of the element) or they are subdivided into several plates. Since two-dimensional structural elements are statically redundant, it is pOSSible for a particular loading to be in equilibrium with many (theoretically an infinite number of) stress states. If the lower bound method of the theory of plasticity is employed, then an admissible stress field or any combination of such stress fields may be selected. In chapter 4 it is shown that this method is suitable for the design of reinforced concrete structures, and the consequence of the choice of the final structural system on the structural behavior is dealt with in detail. The first cases of the use of this method date back to Ritter [6] and Morsch [4], who already at the beginning of the century investigated the resultants of the internal stresses by means of truss models.
