Book excerpt: Come voyage through lost roots of the multi-dimensional artistry of collage. This seemingly simple method leads you on an adventure of self discovery, developing your innate abilities for shapes-shifting using paper, scissors and glue. Author and artist Donna Thompson shares her wisdom and stories as she leads you on a journey through time. From caves of old to collaging in your own home, this colorful adventure is an in-depth exploration of humanity's ancient connections to making art. This triple layered approach is actually three books in one. It begins by guiding you through the mystical Doorway of Color, where you learn the Celtic ways of sensing, gathering and envisioning with images. Next comes the Doorway of Ceremonies, where you unearth indigenous ways of communing with collage. And finally, the Doorway of Dreams, leading to the most ancient ways of remembering who you truly are. Learning to quest with collage is all about playing with colors, signs and synchronicity. It is also a metaphor for the ongoing journey of each human life. You are invited to come along in search of multi-hued elements to weave into an ever unfolding landscape of your own design. Collage Quest is a guide for tracing these deep roots and translating them into modern day materials and language. It is a unique and powerful 21st century tool of co-creation....

Book excerpt: “The Ideal College is a college free to pursue its mission with unobscured vision of the truth, and power to proclaim the truth without fear or favor of politicians, or religious sects, or benefactors, or public cries, or its own administrative machinery.” —William Trufant Foster Visionary. Iconoclast. Rebel. William Trufant Foster set out in 1911 to launch the “ideal college,” and succeeded in building an intellectual liberal arts powerhouse that over the next century would perpetually seek to break the hard crust of custom and orthodoxy. Foster's quest for excellence and truth generated a steady yield of students—ranging from poet Gary Snyder to muckraker Barbara Ehrenreich to Apple founder Steve Jobs—who left Reed College eager to challenge society's dominant paradigms. Comrades of the Quest chronicles the colorful cultural and social history of this band of young, iconoclastic West Coast intellectuals, and of the institution that nurtured them. Drawing from interviews with more than 1,400 people and from unpublished memoirs stretching back to the college's early decades, John Sheehy weaves together a riveting story told from first-hand perspectives of this unique community's early formation and its ongoing quest to bring Foster's vision to life. With a punch much mightier than its weight, the Reed community undertakes an arduous journey through the political and educational developments of the past century—from the progressive education movement in the 1910s, the general education programs between the two world wars, scientific methodology in the 1950s, political relevance in the 1960s, theories of structuralism and deconstruction in the 1970s, the cultural wars in the 1980s, political correctness in the 1990s, to ideological bias in the 2000s—while keeping its founding ideals largely intact. At a time when America is struggling to sustain its innovative edge, Reed College remains an iconic model in equipping students with the most rigorous set of skills and attitudes possible for questioning status quo thinking in a rapidly changing world. Its story, populated with a rich cast of characters, and marked by intense rigor, demanding social freedom, and unconventional creativity, is no customary college history, but rather an intellectual thriller of American idealism played out against the hard world of social, religious, and political conformity, to great heights and near-fatal confrontations.

Book excerpt: Baptists in New Zealand have built few lasting denominational institutions. In keeping with a congregational emphasis, the focus has been on the local church. The Missionary Society, born out of the recognition that some tasks are better done together, is an obvious exception. Another is Carey Baptist College. From nondescript beginnings, the college has become a broad-based theological provider in the first rank of New Zealand institutions. This volume unfolds the story of this crucial Baptist venture. The deeper narrative is of relationships, innovation and commitment. It is a story worth telling.

Book excerpt: True or False: Princeton's Director of Admissions hacked into Yale's secured admissions website to find out who Yale had accepted and rejected. Boston College's average SAT score is up to 1370 and Boston University's average SAT score is up to 1320. Carnegie Mellon offers spots on a priority wait-list to students who send in cash and most of these students get admitted. Well, it's all true. An FBI investigation traced Yale's hacked website back to the computer of Princeton's Director of Admissions, Stephen LeMenager. Boston College's average SAT score is the same as Cornell's and close to Penn's (both Ivies). Carnegie Mellon does have a "priority" wait-list-it costs $400 to be on it and the admissions rate is 95%. Welcome to the circus. Dazed and Confused. Students see the college list published by their high school's guidance department listing every acceptance and rejection from the prior year. Next to each entry is a GPA, a SAT score and the number of AP classes taken. The list is usually ordered from highest to lowest GPA. The first entry: 4.19 (unweighted), 1430 SAT, 7 AP classes, Princeton-rejected, Yale-rejected, Harvard-rejected, Stanford-rejected, Columbia-rejected, Vassar-accepted. Ouch. Scan down the list looking for Yale. Did anyone get into Yale last year? Down at the ninth entry: 3.93, 1450 SAT, 6 AP classes, Brown-accepted, Yale-accepted, Georgetown-accepted. Okay, anyone else? Scan down to the twenty-second entry: 3.88, 1560 SAT, 7 AP classes, Yale-accepted, Duke-accepted, William and Mary-rejected. This doesn't make any sense, thinks the student. Many of the students with the best grades didn't get into any top colleges and still others were rejected at colleges ranked lower than the colleges to which they were accepted. Welcome to the world of college admissions. Ever wondered what a private counselor tells an Upper East Side family for $10,000? The secrets are in College Admissions Trade Secrets. College Admissions Trade Secrets is a straight forward guide to: Top 7 Lies Colleges Tell The Real Scoop Behind Acceptance Rates Things That Really Matter When Comparing Colleges How to Write a Great Essay and Prep for a Great Interview Common Mistakes that Result in Rejection Last Minute Tips for Seniors A Scandalous Examination of Harvard's Course Catalogue, Penn's View Book, and NYU's Faculty How Anyone Can Avoid Being in the Pool of Applicants with the Lowest Acceptance Rate

Specifically, church-related higher education has experienced seismic shifts since the mid-1960s. Framed by emerging research on organizations and theories of isomorphism, this book traces the forty-year narratives of three colleges of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America--Concordia College, Gettysburg College, and Lenoir-Rhyne University. Are these schools seeking to preserve their religious identities, and if so, what organizational strategies are supporting these efforts? In-depth personal interviews, rigorous document analysis, and thoughtful observation give voice to the three stories detailed in College Identity Sagas. For those interested in distinctive colleges, religiously affiliated higher education, and organization and institutional theories, this book is a vital resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what is written about colleges and universities ties rapidly rising tuition to dysfunctional behavior in the academy. Common targets of dysfunction include prestige games among universities, gold plated amenities, and bloated administration. This book offers a different view. To explain rising college cost, the authors place the higher education industry firmly within the larger economic history of the United States. The trajectory of college cost is similar to cost behavior in many other industries, and this is no coincidence. Higher education is a personal service that relies on highly educated labor. A technological trio of broad economic forces has come together in the last thirty years to cause higher education costs, and costs in many other industries, to rise much more rapidly than the inflation rate. The main culprit is economic growth itself. This finding does not mean that all is well in American higher education. A college education has become less reachable to a broad swathe of the American public at the same time that the market demand for highly educated people has soared. This affordability problem has deep roots. The authors explore how cost pressure, the changing wage structure of the US economy, and the complexity of financial aid policy combine to reduce access to higher education below what we need in the 21st century labor market. This book is a call to calm the rhetoric of blame and to instead find policies that will increase access to higher education while preserving the quality of our colleges and universities.
