Book excerpt: Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of all time From the Modern Library’s new set of beautifully repackaged hardcover classics by Truman Capote—also available are Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Other Voices, Other Rooms (in one volume), Portraits and Observations, and The Complete Stories Truman Capote’s masterpiece, In Cold Blood, created a sensation when it was first published, serially, in The New Yorker in 1965. The intensively researched, atmospheric narrative of the lives of the Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas, and of the two men, Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith, who brutally killed them on the night of November 15, 1959, is the seminal work of the “new journalism.” Perry Smith is one of the great dark characters of American literature, full of contradictory emotions. “I thought he was a very nice gentleman,” he says of Herb Clutter. “Soft-spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat.” Told in chapters that alternate between the Clutter household and the approach of Smith and Hickock in their black Chevrolet, then between the investigation of the case and the killers’ flight, Capote’s account is so detailed that the reader comes to feel almost like a participant in the events.

Book excerpt: This book explicitly chronicles 40 cases of unsolved murders and disappearances over a period of more than 160 years, tracing the evolution of criminal investigation and forensic techniques. Murders and other violent crimes often leave an indelible mark on society. The 18th-century murder of "Beautiful Cigar Girl" Mary Rogers helped the then newly emerging tabloid papers become a fixture in the United States. The Federal Aviation Administration was spurred into requiring electronic screening of passengers and carry-on luggage by a series of highly-publicized hijackings. Abductions of youth gave birth to Amber Alerts and advertising missing children on milk cartons. And popular TV shows like Law and Order, CSI, and Cold Case document our fascination with police investigations, heinous criminals, and the complicated aftermath of their actions. This book examines 40 well-known cases of unsolved murders and suspected abductions over a period of over 160 years. Cases are organized chronologically to give readers insight into the evolution of criminal investigation techniques and forensics in the last century and a half. Later chapters detail how modern forensics were used in attempts to solve old cold cases or helped generate new leads.

County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Book excerpt: From the detective who helped catch the Golden State Killer, a memoir about investigating America's toughest cold cases, and the rewards - and toll - of a life spent solving crime. For a decade, from 1973, The Golden State Killer stalked and murdered Californians in the dead of night, leaving entire communities afraid to turn off the lights. Then he vanished, and the case remained unsolved. In 1994, when cold-case investigator Paul Holes came across the old file, he swore he would unmask GSK and finally give these families closure. Twenty-four years later, Holes fulfilled that promise, identifying 73-year-old Joseph J. DeAngelo. Headlines blasted around the world: one of America's most prolific serial killers had been caught. That case launched Paul's career into the stratosphere, turning him into an icon in the true-crime world. But while many know the story of the capture of GSK, until now, no one has truly known the man behind it all.In UNMASKED, Paul takes us through his memories of a storied career and provides an insider account of some of the most notorious cases in contemporary American history, including Laci Peterson's murder and Jaycee Dugard's kidnapping. But this is also a revelatory profile of a complex man and what makes him tick: the drive to find closure for victims and their loved ones; the inability to walk away from a challenge - even at the expense of his own happiness. This is a story about the gritty truth of crime solving when there are no 'case closed' headlines. It is the story of a man and his commitment to his cases, and to the people who might have otherwise been forgotten.

Book excerpt: There are four ways to die, and only one of them requires an intruder. Suicides, accidental, and natural deaths can occur without any evidence from outside the room. But murders typically involve suspects external to the crime scene. If there’s evidence of an outside intruder, homicide detectives have to prepare for a chase. Intruders turn death scenes into crime scenes. Join J. Warner Wallace, former atheist, seasoned cold-case detective, and popular national speaker as he tackles his most important case ... with you on the jury! With the expertise of a cold-case detective, J. Warner examines eight critical pieces of evidence in the “crime scene” of the universe to determine if they point to a Divine Intruder. If you have ever wondered if something (or someone) outside the natural realm created the universe and everything in it, this is the case for you.

The day after Esther’s funeral, her husband, Rene, packed up his girlfriend, Lolly; his daughter, Jeannine; and Lolly’s son, Don, in the company car and took off for Disneyland. If not for the doggedness of the doctor who treated Esther, Rene, then a charismatic and handsome radio personality, would have been free to marry Lolly, who was the station’s pretty twentysomething receptionist. Instead, Rene was charged with capital murder for poisoning his wife with arsenic-laced milkshakes. Murder by Milkshake is the compelling story of the Castellanis, and of their daughter, Jeannine, who was eleven at the time of her mother’s murder and who clung to her father’s innocence, even committing perjury during his trial. Rigorously researched, and based on dozens of interviews with family, friends, and co-workers, Murder by Milkshake documents the sensational case that kept a city spellbound, while providing a snapshot of the Mad Men–esque social and political realities of the 1960s. Because the only man who knew what happened to Denise wasn't talking. He wasn't through with her yet. On July 3, 1994, in an affluent suburb of Prescott, Arizona, a padlocked truck parked in the driveway of 37-year-old John Famalaro provoked suspicion. When authorities finally pried open its doors, they found the nude, handcuffed corpse of Denise Huber stuffed into a freezer--preserved forever in the throes of death. Inside Famalaro's home were Denise's personal belongings along with neatly arranged "trophies" of other female prey. But it was the revelations at Famalaro's trial that would truly stagger the imagination, laying bare the terrifying details of Denise's final hours, and exposing the dark past of a merciless killer consumed by perversity and unfathomable evil.

Ferrell faced the death penalty, sparking Constitutional battles over capital punishment and juveniles in the court system. Psychologists working to save him were locked in opposition with prosecutors who wanted him dead. Decades later, the court battles continue. Is Ferrell a changed man deserving freedom? Or is he still gaming the system?

Book excerpt: Cold-blooded crime record:British "public enemy" murderer On February 12, 1993, Wienerboth (ten years old) and Thompson of the same age abducted and murdered two-year-old boy Balger in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. The brutal act was called the British "public enemy" killing Commit. The two punched and kicked Barge, lifted a ten-kilogram railroad track and smashed his head with a fish tail, applied paint to his left eye and face, let him eat the battery, and took off his shoes and socks. , Trousers and panties, sexually abusing his genitals, and possibly inserting a battery into his anus, Barge was abused to death. On February 14, police found Barge's body. The extent of the corpse's incompleteness was not even clear to the forensic doctor. In order to cover up the crime, Winnipes and Thompson put Barge's body on the tracks and let the train run over in an attempt to pretend to be an accident, and the evil act shocked British society. When Barge's mother, Ms. Denise, found out that Barge was missing, she immediately reported to the police. The police found the whereabouts of the suspect through surveillance video. The two "school-age children between the ages of 10 and 14" were wanted throughout the city and began to investigate students who skipped classes that day. Police then arrested two truant children, Winnipes and Thompson. Police found the same blue paint on Barge's clothes and blood stains on their clothes and shoes. DNA tests confirmed that it was Barge's blood. The shape of Winabers' toe cap matches the bruise on Barger's face, which proves that Winabers kicked Barger's face in this pair of shoes. Two fingerprints were also found on the scene. Police charged them with murder and abduction on February 20, 1993, and moved them to the South Severton Juvenile Court pending trial on the 22nd. When the police and the judiciary announced the identity of the two to the media, they called Winnipes "Boy A" and Thompson "Boy B". The two became the youngest murderers to be convicted in Britain for 250 years, and judges rarely asked the media to publish their real names and appearances. On November 1, 1993, the Royal Court of Preston formally opened for trial, and nearly 500 demonstrators gathered outside the court to demand a reassignment of the murderer. According to the autopsy report, there were forty-two injuries on Barge, each of which was not fatal, meaning that the victim died from chronic torture. Among them, the victim's head was hit by a fish plate to cause ten bone fractures in the victim's skull. It was found that the foreskin of the battery and genitals had been violently tampered with in the victim population. Police suspected that there was a motive for sexual crimes in the case. Although no battery was found in the victim's anus, the two were still suspected of inserting the battery into the victim's anus. Judge Moran, with testimony and a 20-hour recording of the interrogation, declared that the two had committed "crime and brutality" and that their actions were "crafty and very bad". Therefore, he was convicted of murder, kidnapping and attempted abduction. Winnipes and Thompson became the youngest killers in modern British history. Judge Moran suggested that he be sentenced to at least eight years' imprisonment and that specific actions not to be performed after release, including: not returning to Merseyside where the case occurred for life, two persons not communicating with each other for life, etc., must undergo regular inspections. Shortly after the sentencing, Lord Taylor, the chief justice of the British Supreme Court, said the two should be sentenced to at least ten years. The British "The Sun" solicited 280,000 people to sign a petition for additional sentence, and asked the then Home Secretary Mike Howard, their sentences were increased to 15 years. In 1999, the European Court of Human Rights held that two young offenders suffered "unfair treatment" and should be re-determined. In 2000, the two were reduced to eight years in prison because they performed well in prison. At a parole hearing in June 2001, on the grounds that "the two have not been identified as a threat to the safety of the public", Winerboth and Thompson were released from prison in a controversial voice and lived under falsehood due to security concerns. . At the age of 21, Dr. Susan Bailey, a forensic psychiatrist at the Ministry of the Interior, claimed that looking back at his childhood suspicions of sexual crimes, and comparing him with current ones, he can confirm that he "has no tendency to sexual crimes." On July 23, 2010, Winnipes was sentenced to two years in prison for possession of child pornography, paid downloads and distribution of child pornography. On May 4, 2011, Winnipeg was given a new identity again and was granted parole. On July 4, 2013, the Parole Board of England and Wales approved the release of Winabers, and he was formally released on September 3, 2013. Winabos was released in 2013. The victim's father, Leif, said: "Sooner or later he will be jailed again because of his lust for children, only sooner or later." In November 2017, Winnipeg was jailed for the third time for holding child pornographic pictures. The British official spent five million pounds to return Wenabers to the society. He could take guitar lessons in the prison, spend time decorating his cell, and use a personal rowing machine to exercise. These entertainment activities cost all It is the hard-earned money of taxpayers. He spent eight years in a juvenile correctional institution, costing 1.5 million pounds. After the first parole, the official spent 100,000 pounds a year monitoring him for ten consecutive years. Officials created a fake identity for him, costing 1.5 million pounds, and he spent at least half a million pounds for the second three years in prison. A parole hearing and an expert assessment would cost at least 250,000 pounds. Official records show that the prison administrator spent 24 hours in the supervision of Winnipes and spent nearly 300,000 pounds in 18 months. To avoid being attacked by other prisoners, Winnipes is currently in solitary confinement. Wenneboth's imprisonment three times was a blow to those who have tried to transform him over the past 25 years. The official spent about five million pounds (51.5 million Hong Kong dollars), hoping to get him back into society, and the results will be put to waste.
