Book excerpt: In March of 1981, the Governor's Office issued a Cogeneration Blueprint for State Facilities and reported an estimate of over 400 MW(e) of cost-effective cogeneration potential. A portion of this potential is represented by the State-owned hospitals administered by the Department of Developmental Services and the Department of Veterans Affairs. On February 18, 1981, a kick-off meeting was held by DWR in Sacramento to initiate the development of cogeneration systems for Sonoma State Hospital, the Veterans' Home in Yountville, Porterville State Hospital, and Fairview State Hospital. Attending this meeting were representatives of Kaiser Engineers Power Corporation (KEPC) and all the State agencies that will participate in the development of cogeneration at the hospitals. KEPC subsequently performed a study to determine the cogeneration potential for each of these hospitals. The study confirms that all four hospitals have significant cogeneration potential. In fact, similar cogeneration systems could be installed at the hospitals. KEPC estimates that the following electrical energy could be generated at each facility with a cogeneration system rated at nominally 2,500 kW.
