Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological Survey of Kentucky Of the more than 273 analyses reported in the following pages, 137 are Of coals from 14 counties in the eastern coal field of Kentucky; the greater number Of them being from Bell, Breathitt, Clay, Harlan, Leslie, Perry and Whitley counties; a comparatively few samples are from Johnson, Knott, Knox, Letcher, Laurel and Martin counties. In the Appendix, West Virginia is represented in the analyses of seven samples, for comparison with Kentucky coals, together with the analyses Of many other coals received since this report was made. Most Of these coals would come under the head of semi bituminous, splint, or block coal; some few are, no doubt, entitled to the name bituminous coal, and some of them are cannel coals. With them are reported some with such high ash percentage as to cause them to be classed with the bituminous shales. These, however, are comparatively few in number, and most of them could be used for fuel in their im mediate vicinity. Generally speaking, these coals are of very good quality, and many Of them would answer admirably for the manufacture Of coke, While some Of the Splint or block coals could, probably, be used without coking for smelting iron ores. In Short, the coals of this, one Of the two immense coal fields Of Kentucky, will generally compare favorably with those of any other region in the world. Comparing the ash percentages of the coals of the seven counties which furnished the greatest number of samples, we find the following results, viz. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coals of Middle Fork of Kentucky River in Leslie and Harlan Counties This report follows an investigation made in 1917 of. Coal openings on Middle fork, Kentucky river, beginning with hell-for-certain creek and including all the drainage area above that Stream. Nearly every opening in condi tion to examine was visited and to the data acquired from them is added that from several previous visits by the writer to the region. There is omitted from this report, however, all but a few of the analyses of coal heretofore given, because of the wrong impression liable to be given by the inferior quality of the outcrop coal from which the samples were necessarily Obtained. Even the few analyses retained are open to suspicion, although the samples were taken from solid coal underground. The general direction Of dip of strata is northeast erly but with several minor variations. Near the mouth Of Greasy creek is the bottom Of a. Shallow elliptical basin with major axis running thence northward nearly to Hyden, while in other directions the rim is but a mile or two away, or merges into the general Slope Of strata. Caldwell, Jr., Metallurgist of the Kentucky Geological Survey, will be found elsewhere in this issue. We bespeak for this exceedingly valuable paper a very attentive perusal. It furnishes an exhibit of some of our most important resources (coal and iron), which, coming from the source it does, can not fail to attract attention abroad. It is a document which should be printed in pamphlet form and scattered far and wide, in the United States and Europe. Mr. Caldwell is a thoroughly accomplished and experienced metallurgist, his theoretical knowledge having been acquired at the great schools of science and art in Berlin, and his practical knowledge having been obtained in the iron-works of Silesia. He has been engaged by the Chattanooga Steel and Iron Works as the chemist of the establishment, and he will make his headquarters there upon the completion of the steel furnace of the company. This change will not, however, deprive the Geological Survey of Kentucky of Mr. Caldwell's valuable sendees. In the Northwestern States they trumpet throughout the world their great resources in wheat-producing lands, and keep them ever before the public by means of pamphlets, newspapers, and circulars. We have in Kentucky more durable and valuable resources than those States, and they can only be developed by letting the world know what they are. Our coal and iron region is immense and exhaustless. The facilities for working it are remarkable. We have only to force the facts relating to their abundance upon the attention of capitalists, and our State will be put forward half a century in progress." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Structure in Paleozoic Bituminous Coals Views and conceptions of the origin, composition, and general na ture of coal differ so widely that to determine the real extent of actual knowledge is no easy matter. The chemist finds difficulty in attacking the chemical problems and the engineer lacks a broad chemical basis for the study of his problems. Thus the economical and efficient utilization of coal in the industries suffers froma lack of knowledge of the composition of coal itself. Most scientists interested in this matter, as has been brought out in discussions during the recent investigation of coal problems, appear to have only a vague idea of the components of coal and their origin. Some are even in doubt as to whether substances derived from the wood and resins of plants form a part of coal; and few seem to have more than' the dimmest idea of what are the components of coal, the condition in which these now exist, and the transformations that they have undergone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Resources of Part of the Cumberland Gap Coal Field, Kentucky In a region as heavily timbered as this the topographic sketching must, to a large degree, be approximate only; so that a comparison of the locations and eleva tions of the coal outcrops on the maps, with the statements concerning the same in the text will be found in a few cases to show a disagreement. This is most noticeable where the locations and elevations of the coals have been determined instrumentally, either by stadia or transit, since the drawing of the map. In cases of such disagreement a compromise has often been necessary in showing the location of a coal on the map. Though usually the attempt was made to show its horizontal position rather than its position relative to the surface contours, as it is believed that such procedure would best meet the needs of the engineer in the field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Depression and the New Deal touched the lives of almost every Kentuckian during the 1930s. Fifty years later the Commonwealth is still affected by the legacies of that era and the policies of the Roosevelt administration. George T. Blakey has written the first full study of this turbulent decade in Kentucky, and he offers a fresh perspective on the New Deal programs by viewing them from the local and state level rather than from Washington. Thousands of Kentuckians worked for New Deal programs such as the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Projects Administration; thousands more kept their homes through loans from the Home Owners Loan Corporation. Tobacco growers adopted new production techniques and rural farms received their first electricity because of the Agricultural Adjustment and Rural Electrification administrations. The New Deal stretched from the Harlan County coal mines to a TVA dam near Paducah, and it encompassed subjects as small as Social Security pension checks and as large as revived Bourbon distilleries. The impact of these phenomena on Kentucky was both beneficial and disruptive, temporary and enduring. Blakey analyzes the economic effects of this unprecedented and massive government spending to end the depression. He also discusses the political arena in which Governors Laffoon, Chandler, and Johnson had to wrestle with new federal rules. And he highlights social changes the New Deal brought to the Commonwealth: accelerated urbanization, enlightened land use, a lessening of state power and individualism, and a greater awareness of Kentucky history. Hard Times and New Deal weaves together private memories of older Kentuckians and public statements of contemporary politicians; it includes legislative debates and newspaper accounts, government statistics and personal reminiscences. The result is a balanced and fresh look at the patchwork of emergency and reform activities which many people loved, many others hated, but no one could ignore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky's rich archaeological heritage spans thousands of years, and the Commonwealth remains fertile ground for study of the people who inhabited the midcontinent before, during, and after European settlement. This long-awaited volume brings together the most recent research on Kentucky's prehistory and early history, presenting both an accurate descriptive and an authoritative interpretation of Kentucky's past. The book is arranged chronologically -- from the Ice Age to modern times, when issues of preservation and conservation have overtaken questions of identification and classification. For each time slice of Kentucky's past, the contributors describe typical communities and settlement patterns, major changes from previous cultural periods, the nature of the economy and subsistence, artifacts, the general health and characteristics of the people, and regional cultural differences. Sites discussed include the Green River shell mounds, the Central Kentucky Adena mounds and enclosures, Eastern Kentucky rockshelters, the important Wickliffe site at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, Fort Ancient culture villages, and the fortified towns of the Mississippian period in Western Kentucky. The authors draw from a wealth of unpublished material and offer the detailed insights and perspectives of specialists who have focused much of their professional careers on the scientific investigation of Kentucky's prehistory. The book's many graphic elements -- maps, artifact drawings, photographs, and village plans -- combined with a straightforward and readable text, provide a format that will appeal to the general reader as well as to students and specialists in other fields who wish to learn more about Kentucky's archaeology.
