Book Synopsis Stakeholders, Sustainable Development Policies and the Coal Mining Industry by : Izabela Jonek-Kowalska
Download or read book Stakeholders, Sustainable Development Policies and the Coal Mining Industry written by Izabela Jonek-Kowalska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies the impact of internal and external stakeholders on the implementation of sustainable development policies in the coal mining sector in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The book assesses what activities and conditions need to be improved so that sustainable development policies can be more effectively and efficiently implemented. With a specific focus on the hard coal and lignite mining sectors, it examines a broad range of case studies from Eastern European countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States, including Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Kazakhstan, Germany, Spain, France and the United Kingdom, among many more. Beginning with an introduction to sustainable development and stakeholder theory, Part II then examines internal stakeholders, including owners, managers, employees and trade unions. Part III examines external stakeholders, touching upon those directly related to the mining industry, such as customers and mining enterprises, and those not directly associated such as local and regional communities and environmental organisations. The book concludes by proposing a model approach to the management of stakeholders involved in mining enterprises, focusing on improving the process of implementing sustainable development in the mining sector and strengthening the effects of this process. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the extractive industries, natural resource management and policy and sustainable development.

Book Synopsis The Age of Coal by : Franz-Josef Brüggemeier
Download or read book The Age of Coal written by Franz-Josef Brüggemeier and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Europe, coal was by far the most important source of energy from the beginning of industrialisation until well after the Second World War. It was indispensable in shaping the modern world, and in altering our understanding of time and space. Used foundationally in organic chemistry, coal helped to create the multitude of colours, medicines, and man-made products which still shape our daily lives. Without coal, the First and Second World Wars would have looked very different, and in the peace conferences after both wars, the control of this resource was of central importance. At its height, coal mining in Europe employed almost two and a half million people, mostly men, who had often migrated over vast distances to find work in this booming industry, despite the difficulties and dangers. As a result of the capitalist model of the industry, mining saw significant labour organization and strikes. The use of coal, however, created environmental problems. During and after industrialisation, the demand for energy multiplied, and coal was the only resource that could satisfy this increasing demand, despite the high levels of CO2 emission. In contemporary society, world-wide attempts are being made to reduce these emissions, but while in Europe, coal mining and use has declined, world-wide its production and consumption have reached new heights. Even in Europe, coal's major legacy persists: society's dependence on vast amounts of easily available, transportable, and affordable energy. Franz-Josef Brüggemeier uses modern Europe's reliance on coal to tell a wide-ranging story of how energy can shape a society.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Coal's Decline by : Mike Parker
Download or read book The Politics of Coal's Decline written by Mike Parker and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 1994 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hard coal industry in western Europe has been in decline for many years. This study examines its future prospects and finds no reason to believe that the trend will be reversed. The author shows how the manner and rate of this decline will continue to be determined as much by political as by economic factors, including the politics of environmental controls and market liberalization, where developments have been increasingly unfavourable to coal. A centrally directed policy by the European Union to protect indigenous coal production has never seemed likely, with the policies of member states showing wide divergences. Above all, there has been a marked contrast between the UK policy of rapid contraction of its relatively efficient industry, and the German policy of continuing massive subsidization of its very high-cost industry, with slow adaptation by consensus. This great anomaly cannot be understood without looking at the politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal will continue to provide a major portion of energy requirements in the United States for at least the next several decades. It is imperative that accurate information describing the amount, location, and quality of the coal resources and reserves be available to fulfill energy needs. It is also important that the United States extract its coal resources efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally responsible manner. A renewed focus on federal support for coal-related research, coordinated across agencies and with the active participation of the states and industrial sector, is a critical element for each of these requirements. Coal focuses on the research and development needs and priorities in the areas of coal resource and reserve assessments, coal mining and processing, transportation of coal and coal products, and coal utilization.
