A Helensburgh hotel owner began to operate Europe's first ever commercial steam ship from Glasgow to Greenock. No longer would ships be dependent on the tide or the wind. The Comet, as his ship was known, had been built by John Wood, of Port Glasgow, and was fitted with paddle wheels. Her first voyage from Glasgow to Greenock was made at about 5mph against a headwind. Advertised to sail on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Glasgow, the Comet operated the first scheduled steamship service in Europe. It was the start of a revolution that would see the Clyde as the greatest shipbuilding river in the world, and the river's estuary as a haven for pleasure steamers and puffers calling at the remote loch-side piers and inlets. Companies such as David MacBrayne's and the Caledonian Steam Packet Co. would be formed to operate steamers far and wide, a legacy kept alive today by the Paddle Steamer Waverley. Alistair Deayton and Iain Quinn take us through the two centuries of Clyde paddle steamers, illustrating the most famous, such as the Columba, Jeanie Deans and Waverley, illustrating not just the ships themselves but the piers they sailed from, from Rothesay to Helensburgh and from Loch Goil to Loch Long.

Book excerpt: Alistair Deayton takes us on another tour of Clyde pleasure steamers, looking at the ships of Williamson Buchanan and Turbine Steamers Ltd, two of the major independent players on the Clyde. The Williamson-Buchanan steamers served the routes 'doon the watter' from the centre of Glasgow to the Clyde Coast resorts, whilst the ships of Turbine Steamers covered long-distance day excursions to Inveraray and Campbeltown. The book also includes the steamers of the Lochgoil Company and the two magnificent paddle steamers called the Lord of the Isles. From Arran to Rothesay and all ports in between, we're taken on a nostalgic trip back to the days when steam was King on the Clyde and when you could travel from Arran to Glasgow in less than two hours. A special chapter is given to the development of the White Funnel turbines, which saw the world's first steam-turbine-powered passenger ship, King Edward, sail on the Clyde.

Excerpt: TS King Edward was an excursion steamer built at Dumbarton for service down the River Clyde to the Firth of Clyde and associated sea lochs on the west coast of Scotland, as far as Campbeltown. The first commercial vessel to be driven by steam turbines, King Edward was remarkably successful for a prototype, serving as a Clyde steamer for half a century from 1901 until 1951, interrupted only by service in the two world wars. The success of the vessel quickly led to the adoption of turbine propulsion for all manner of merchant vessels, from channel ferries and coastal steamers to transatlantic liners. In 1803 the Charlotte Dundas showed the practicality of steam power for marine use, and in 1812 Henry Bell's PS Comet began the first commercially successful steamboat service in Europe, sailing on the River Clyde between Glasgow and Helensburgh. Others soon followed, and by mid century a large fleet of Clyde steamers competed for holiday and excursion traffic down the River and Firth of Clyde. By the end of the century paddle steamers had reached a peak of design, with a maximum economic operating speed of around 19 knots (35 km/h), but speed was at a premium, particularly on the longer routes such as sailings from Glasgow to Inveraray and Campbeltown. Up to this time, vessels had been powered by reciprocating steam engines. Steam was generated by boilers, and piped to cylinders wherein it drove pistons, the back-and-forth motion of which was converted to rotary motion by connecting rods. Early vessels were driven by paddle wheels, but at mid-century...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clyde Passenger Steamer, Its Rise and Progress During the Nineteenth Century: From the 'Comet' of 1812 to the 'King Edward' of 1901 Pecuijar interest belongs to the inception and development of the passenger steamer on the River Clyde. The Clyde was the cradle of the steamship enterprise of the world, and the Clyde passenger steamer has been the pioneer of many, if not most, of the improvements in bulls and machinery and of the countless amenities which make travelling by sea a pleasure to-day. The sustained excellence of the boats is proved by the fact that most of them are ultimately bought up for service elsewhere. During the American War many were purchased and sent across the Atlantic to distinguish themselves as blockade-runners, while others have been acquired for places as far apart as Bordeaux and the Bosphorus, Japan and the River Plate.
