Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highly commended in the Anaesthesia category of the 2014 BMA Medical Books awards! From reviews: "Altogether, this textbook offers an excellent detailed overview of basic principles, mechanics, and physics of technical equipment used in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine." Critical Care, Feb 2014 "This book is excellent. I have read a number of equipment related books and found most of them stale and filled with minutia. Instead this fresh look at equipment really makes it interesting to read and keeps your attention. With sections that give quick answers to how things work, advantages and disadvantages, in an easy to read format you get exactly what you want to know RIGHT away. In addition the full color photos and well done charts really add to the depth of this book. It is my opinion this may be one of the best books on the market for quick review of anesthesia and critical care equipment. Let's be honest, no one is sitting at home reading equipment books for pleasure so when you NEED the information you likely need it right away. This book does exactly that; easy format, clear and concise information with everything you need to know about a piece of equipment easy to find and within a page or two. I would recommend this to all trainees in anesthesia but also for those providers who like to be prepared in the operating room to deal with any issue that might arise." www.nurse-anesthesia.org, 8 Feb 2014 Equipment in Anaesthesia and Critical Care specifically follows the syllabus published by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and is the perfect guide for candidates studying for their FRCA qualifications. The book is beautifully illustrated and features high quality colour photographs throughout. The text is engaging and comprehensive, relating each piece of equipment back to its basic physics, mechanics and clinical context. The clear, concise and standardised format means that information is easy to access and perfect for revision. Every major piece of equipment is featured alongside colour photos, reproducible line diagrams, and information on its uses, how it works, pros and cons, and safety considerations. The authors, all senior registrars in anaesthesia and critical care, appreciate exactly what candidates need to know to pass the FRCA exam. They have identified and tackled difficult subjects which are often glossed over or omitted in other resources, to produce a book that is comprehensive, engaging and to the point. In addition to FRCA candidates, the book is also suitable for operating department practitioners, critical care staff, and physicians with an interest in anaesthesia or critical care.

Book excerpt: This widely praised, first-of-its-kind book has been thoroughly updated, expanded, and enriched with extensive new case material, illustrations, and link-outs to multimedia, practice guidelines, and more. Written and edited by outstanding world experts, this was the first and remains the leading single-source volume on intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM). It is aimed at graduate students and trainees, as well as members of the operative team, including anesthesiologists, technologists, neurophysiologists, surgeons, and nurses. Now commonplace in procedures that place the nervous system at risk, such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, otologic surgery, vascular surgery, and others, effective IOM requires an unusually high degree of coordination among members of the operative team. The purpose of the book is to help students, trainees, and team members acquire a better understanding of one another’s roles and thereby to improve the quality of care and patient safety. From the reviews of the First Edition: “A welcome addition to reference works devoted to the expanding field of nervous system monitoring in the intraoperative period... will serve as a useful guide for many different health care professionals and particularly for anesthesiologists involved with this monitoring modality...An excellent reference...[and] a helpful guide both to the novice and to the developing expert in this field.” ‐‐Canadian Journal of Anesthesia “Impressive... [The book] is well written, indexed, and illustrated...The chapters are all extensively referenced. It is also very good value at the price....I would recommend this book to all residents and especially to all neuroanesthesiologists. It will make a worthwhile addition to their library.” ‐‐Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology

Book excerpt: In April of 1991, 425 partICIpants from 18 countries met in Hamamatsu in Japan for the 6th International Symposium on Computing in Anesthesia and Intensive Care (lSCAIC). The meeting was one of the most spectacular academic and fruitful in the history of ISCAIC. We had four days of fascinating presentations and discussions covering many areas of technology in Anesthesia and intensive care. New technologies were presented and old technology reexamined. The measures of success of the meeting were the excellent research material in oral and poster presentations, and state of the art reviews of the latest issues by distinguished worldwide key speakers. It must be sure that the meeting was most effective to promote and disseminate up-to-date information in these fields across the participating countries. The aim of this book is to record the exciting achievements of the meeting and extend them further among our colleagues. We hope the readers of this book will share the same excitation as well as the latest information in this speciality. Finally we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all participants and others for the contribution to the compilation of this book. Kazuyuki Ikeda, M.D.

Book excerpt: Research in electrophysiologic monitoring in anesthesia and intensive care has focussed mostly on questions pertinent for patient care: First how to quantitate drug effects on brain electrical activity and the degree of anesthetic-induced suppression of the central nervous system. Second, how to monitor functional impairment following cerebral ischemia and hypoxia. And third, how to differ entiate between drug-induced effects on the central nervous system and deleteri ous events related to reductions in cerebral blood flow and/or oxygen delivery. Even though progress has been achieved over the last 10 years in this field and fascinating new techniques have been developed, it is still not clear which monitor parameter will provide adequate information on the depth of anes thesia and the analgesic level. Because the central nervous system has been one of the main research areas in our department over the last 10 years, we organized a workshop to summarize the latest developments in central nervous system monitoring. This book comprises the topics of this workshop and is intended to provide insight into the current status of central nervous system monitoring, elucidating possible indications and delineating its limitations.

Book excerpt: There is a tendency of an increasing number of signals and derived variables to be incorporated in the monitoring of patients during anesthesia and in intensive care units. The addition of new signals hardly ever leads to thedeletion of other signals. This is probably based on a feeling of insecurity. We must realize that each new signal that is being monitored brings along its cost, in terms of risk to the patient, investment and time. It is therefore essential to assess the relative contribution of this new signal to the quality of the monitoring process; i. e. given the set of signals already in use, what is the improvement when a new signal is added? Beyond a certain point the addition of new information leads to new uncertainty and degrades the result (Ream, 1981) In the diagnostic process, it is possible to evaluate "result" in an objective, qualitative way. The changes in the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnosis as a result of the addition or deletion of a certain variable can be calculated on the basis of false negative, false positive, correct negative and false negative scores. Different methods for multiple regression analysis have been implemented on computers (Gelsema, 1981) which can support such decision processes. In monitoring, the situation is much more complex. Many definitions of monitoring have been given; the common denominator is that monitoring is a continuous diagnostic process based upon a (semi)continuous flow of information. This makes simple assessment methods useless.

Book excerpt: Implementing safety practices in healthcare saves lives and improves the quality of care: it is therefore vital to apply good clinical practices, such as the WHO surgical checklist, to adopt the most appropriate measures for the prevention of assistance-related risks, and to identify the potential ones using tools such as reporting & learning systems. The culture of safety in the care environment and of human factors influencing it should be developed from the beginning of medical studies and in the first years of professional practice, in order to have the maximum impact on clinicians' and nurses' behavior. Medical errors tend to vary with the level of proficiency and experience, and this must be taken into account in adverse events prevention. Human factors assume a decisive importance in resilient organizations, and an understanding of risk control and containment is fundamental for all medical and surgical specialties. This open access book offers recommendations and examples of how to improve patient safety by changing practices, introducing organizational and technological innovations, and creating effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care systems, in order to spread the quality and patient safety culture among the new generation of healthcare professionals, and is intended for residents and young professionals in different clinical specialties.

Book excerpt: The management of critically ill patients has,in the past few years, been a discipline at the forefront of development which continues to make progress with the support of basic and clinical research in the broadest sense. The application of biotechnology in this particular area has revealed itself to be essential in an attempt to provide the best interpretation of the bio-humoral and functional alterations present in a long series of often complex clinical conditions. The care of the critically ill is also at the forefront in the application of increasingly sophisticated clinical monitoring systems that also contribute to standardizing certain procedures, establish guidelines, and evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic interventions and their costs.

This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of today's increasing body of knowledge in regard to central nervous func tion and/or the mode of action of centrally active compounds, little is done to monitor those patients which are at risk of cerebral lesions either in the OR or in the ICU. Due to the inconsistency of reports regarding the application and the benefits computerized EEG and/or evoked potential monitoring will bring to the clinician, physicians still are reluctant to get involved with a technique, which they think, will have little or no effect on the outcome of a patients well being. However, due to the development in computer technology, data acquisition and comprehension, it now is possible to monitor such a viable organ as the Central Nervous System (CNS) on a routine base without being a specialist in neurology or electroencephalography. Thus, the book is intended to guide the clinician to use BEG and evoked potential monitoring in a day to day situation, without going too deep into technical details. As an improvement of cerebral care is needed, various representative cases underline the interpretation of EEG power spectra and evoked potential changes in regard to the underlying clinical situation. It is hoped that this book will serve as a guide to anyone who considers cerebral monitoring a necessity in today's patient care. This may be the anesthesiologist, the intensive care therapist, the nurse anesthetist as well as the medical personnel in the lCU setting.
