Book Synopsis The Abbot and the Rule by : Michelle Still
Download or read book The Abbot and the Rule written by Michelle Still and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Albans was one of the greatest Benedictine abbeys of medieval England, and the early 14th century was a period during which the concerns of the community and the role of the abbot emerge particularly clearly. Yet the history of the abbey during this period has received little attention since general surveys undertaken over eighty years ago, and the manorial history by Levett in 1938. Basing herself on the unique and relatively unexploited Gesta Abbatum Monasterii Sancti Albani, Michelle Still examines the position of St Albans in both the secular and monastic worlds, with a focus on the period 1290-1349. The study includes discussion of the role of the abbot as a feudal landlord, a provider of education (at the abbey's grammar school), and a dispenser of charity. In conclusion, she notes the pivotal importance of the personality and influence of the abbot of St Albans in ensuring the strict observance of the Rule of St Benedict in an age when traditional monasticism was increasingly challenged. Through the detailed study of this one abbey, this book makes an important contribution to the overall picture of monastic life in medieval England.

Book Synopsis The Murder of William of Norwich by : E.M. Rose
Download or read book The Murder of William of Norwich written by E.M. Rose and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1144, the mutilated body of William of Norwich, a young apprentice leatherworker, was found abandoned outside the city's walls. The boy bore disturbing signs of torture, and a story spread that it was a ritual murder, performed by Jews in imitation of the Crucifixion as a mockery of Christianity. The outline of William's tale eventually gained currency far beyond Norwich, and the idea that Jews engaged in ritual murder became firmly rooted in the European imagination. E.M. Rose's engaging book delves into the story of William's murder and the notorious trial that followed to uncover the origin of the ritual murder accusation - known as the "blood libel" - in western Europe in the Middle Ages. Focusing on the specific historical context - 12th-century ecclesiastical politics, the position of Jews in England, the Second Crusade, and the cult of saints - and suspensefully unraveling the facts of the case, Rose makes a powerful argument for why the Norwich Jews (and particularly one Jewish banker) were accused of killing the youth, and how the malevolent blood libel accusation managed to take hold. She also considers four "copycat" cases, in which Jews were similarly blamed for the death of young Christians, and traces the adaptations of the story over time. In the centuries after its appearance, the ritual murder accusation provoked instances of torture, death and expulsion of thousands of Jews and the extermination of hundreds of communities. Although no charge of ritual murder has withstood historical scrutiny, the concept of the blood libel is so emotionally charged and deeply rooted in cultural memory that it endures even today. Rose's groundbreaking work, driven by fascinating characters, a gripping narrative, and impressive scholarship, provides clear answers as to why the blood libel emerged when it did and how it was able to gain such widespread acceptance, laying the foundations for enduring antisemitic myths that continue to the present.
Book Synopsis Monastic and Religious Orders in Britain, 1000-1300 by : Janet Burton
Download or read book Monastic and Religious Orders in Britain, 1000-1300 written by Janet Burton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-28 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the development of monasticism in England, Scotland and Wales from the last half century of Anglo-Saxon England to 1300. It explores the nature of the impact of the Norman settlement on monastic life, and how Britain responded to new, European ideas on monastic life. In particular, it examines Britain's response to the needs of religious women. It covers every aspect of the life and work of the religious orders: their daily life, the buildings in which they lived, their contribution to intellectual developments and to the economy. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between religious houses and their founders and patrons. This shows the degree of dependence of religious houses on local patrons. Indeed, one major theme which emerges from the book is the constant tension between the ideals of monastic communities and the demands of the world.

Book Synopsis The Chronicle of Glastonbury Abbey by : James P. Carley
Download or read book The Chronicle of Glastonbury Abbey written by James P. Carley and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John of Glastonbury's chronicle represents an attempt to summarise the lore and learning about Glastonbury Abbey and its past available in the fourteenth century, a body of knowledge which changed very little before the Reformation. The author drew on a large number of sources and edited these skilfully to form his narrative, while preserving the earlier text almost intact. The result is the fullest medieval account of the abbey and its legends. A translation is included, which makes the important text available in English for the first time, and the whole volume is designed as a companion to John Scott's edition and translation of William of Malmesbury's twelfth-century account of the abbey's history.
