Book excerpt: Correspondence from German entomologist and physician Christian Rudolph Wilhelm Wiedemann (1770-1840) to American entomologist and conchologist Thomas Say (1787-1834), dated from 1819 to 1824. In a letter dated April 4, 1819, Wiedemann writes "it is my earnest wish to enter in correspondence with you, out of which, I am confident, there will issue some advantage to the study of natural history." He offers to send Say specimens of European insects and remarks on the impending publication of his Diptera exotica. Other correspondence relates to the further exchange of insect specimens and minerals, and the state of the entomology field in Germany. Wiedemann asks Say to send birdskins on behalf of the German entomologist and ornithologist Friedrich Boie (1789-1870), as well. After insects sent by Say arrived damaged, Wiedemann suggested in a letter dated December 12, 1821, that Say use a pincette to fasten the pins securing the specimens to wood or cork. Other topics include publications on entomology, and insect classification and description. Several letters include draft replies from Say, and there is also a list of insects for Wiedemann that Say observed on Major Stephen Harriman Long's (1784-1864) 1823 expedition to St. Peter's River. Also includes a receipt for insects and minerals shipped by Wiedemann through Ferdinand Schwartz.

Book excerpt: Explorer, pioneering natural scientist, and a founder of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Thomas Say (1787-1834) devoted his life to establishing the authority of American scientists to name and describe their native flora and fauna (until then, specimens were sent to Europe for that purpose). He was the first to name and describe for science the coyote, plains grey wolf, and swift fox, in addition to several western birds and many amphibians. He ranks with William Bartram, Alexander Wilson, Thomas Nuttall, and John James Audubon as one of the great naturalists of early America. In the early nineteenth century, Say was successful in founding the sciences of entomology and conchology in the United States. He wrote the first book published in America on insects, American Entomology (1824-1828), primarily illustrated by Titian Peale. In 1817 Say joined the wealthy Scottish geologist and social reformer, William Maclure, on an expedition to Spanish-controlled Florida and the sea islands off the coast of Georgia; two years later, he was the first trained scientist to accompany a government-sponsored expedition to the west, when he joined Stephen H. Long's expedition to the Rocky Mountains. At the instigation of Maclure, Say moved to Robert Owen's "utopian" community of New Harmony, Indiana, in 1825. It was there, under relatively primitive conditions, that he produced his great work on shells, American Conchology, with plates drawn and colored by his wife, Lucy Sistare Say. This is the first full biography of Thomas Say in sixty years. Patricia Tyson Stroud, herself a member of the Say family, draws upon Say's correspondence and other biographical details to present anaccurate, detailed picture of Say's personality and character. Thomas Say, New World Naturalist will be of interest to anyone interested in the history of science, Philadelphia history, history of the early Republic, biography, entomology, and malacology.

Some of these have been proved: others are still at the level of likely but unproven conjectures. The main text of this biography is written almost entirely without equations. Mathematical appendices deepen knowledge of some technical aspects of the subject.

Eighty years ago, desktops were equipped with a nonelectronic data processing machine: a card file. In Paper Machines, Markus Krajewski traces the evolution of this proto-computer of rearrangeable parts (file cards) that became ubiquitous in offices between the world wars. The story begins with Konrad Gessner, a sixteenth-century Swiss polymath who described a new method of processing data: to cut up a sheet of handwritten notes into slips of paper, with one fact or topic per slip, and arrange as desired. In the late eighteenth century, the card catalog became the librarian's answer to the threat of information overload. Then, at the turn of the twentieth century, business adopted the technology of the card catalog as a bookkeeping tool. Krajewski explores this conceptual development and casts the card file as a “universal paper machine” that accomplishes the basic operations of Turing's universal discrete machine: storing, processing, and transferring data. In telling his story, Krajewski takes the reader on a number of illuminating detours, telling us, for example, that the card catalog and the numbered street address emerged at the same time in the same city (Vienna), and that Harvard University's home-grown cataloging system grew out of a librarian's laziness; and that Melvil Dewey (originator of the Dewey Decimal System) helped bring about the technology transfer of card files to business.

How could pipe organs be driven and made to play themselves by waterpower alone? And who were the architects, engineers, and craftsmen who created these wonders? All these questions are answered. At the end of the book we visit the lost ‘garden of marvels’ at Pratolino with its many grottoes, automata and water jokes; and we attend the performance of Mercury and Mars in Parma in 1628, with its spectacular stage effects and its music by Claudio Monteverdi – one of the places where opera was born. Renaissance Fun is offered as an entertainment in itself. But behind the show is a more serious scholarly argument, centred on the enormous influence of two ancient writers on these subjects, Vitruvius and Hero. Vitruvius’s Ten Books on Architecture were widely studied by Renaissance theatre designers. Hero of Alexandria wrote the Pneumatics, a collection of designs for surprising and entertaining devices that were the models for sixteenth and seventeenth century automata. A second book by Hero On Automata-Making – much less well known, then and now – describes two miniature theatres that presented plays without human intervention. One of these, it is argued, provided the model for the type of proscenium theatre introduced from the mid-sixteenth century, the generic design which is still built today. As the influence of Vitruvius waned, the influence of Hero grew.

The purpose of this conference was to examine more closely concepts of kingship in various regions of the world and in different time periods. The study of kingship goes back to the roots of fields such as anthropology and religious studies, as well as Assyriology and Near Eastern archaeology. More recently, several conferences have been held on kingship, drawing on cross-cultural comparisons. Yet the question of the divinity of the king as god has never before been examined within the framework of a cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary conference. Some of the recent anthropological literature on kingship relegates this question of kings who deified themselves to the background or voices serious misgivings about the usefulness of the distinction between divine and sacred kings. Several contributors to this volume have pointed out the Western, Judeo-Christian background of our categories of the human and the divine. However, rather than abandoning the term divine kingship because of its loaded history it is more productive to examine the concept of divine kingship more closely from a new perspective in order to modify our understanding of this term and the phenomena associated with it.
