Book excerpt: Renaissance Fun is about the technology of Renaissance entertainments in stage machinery and theatrical special effects; in gardens and fountains; and in the automata and self-playing musical instruments that were installed in garden grottoes. How did the machines behind these shows work? How exactly were chariots filled with singers let down onto the stage? How were flaming dragons made to fly across the sky? How were seas created on stage? How did mechanical birds imitate real birdsong? What was ‘artificial music’, three centuries before Edison and the phonograph? How could pipe organs be driven and made to play themselves by waterpower alone? And who were the architects, engineers, and craftsmen who created these wonders? All these questions are answered. At the end of the book we visit the lost ‘garden of marvels’ at Pratolino with its many grottoes, automata and water jokes; and we attend the performance of Mercury and Mars in Parma in 1628, with its spectacular stage effects and its music by Claudio Monteverdi – one of the places where opera was born. Renaissance Fun is offered as an entertainment in itself. But behind the show is a more serious scholarly argument, centred on the enormous influence of two ancient writers on these subjects, Vitruvius and Hero. Vitruvius’s Ten Books on Architecture were widely studied by Renaissance theatre designers. Hero of Alexandria wrote the Pneumatics, a collection of designs for surprising and entertaining devices that were the models for sixteenth and seventeenth century automata. A second book by Hero On Automata-Making – much less well known, then and now – describes two miniature theatres that presented plays without human intervention. One of these, it is argued, provided the model for the type of proscenium theatre introduced from the mid-sixteenth century, the generic design which is still built today. As the influence of Vitruvius waned, the influence of Hero grew.

Book excerpt: Fun with Stuff is a collection of humor columns, many of which first appeared in a Southern California Mensa publication. But don't be frightened; they're not all that intellectual. Hardly. Instead, these are true life stories and exaggerated fabrications that everyone can relate to. Laugh along as Bruce Smith relates tales detailing: A comedy of errors as Bruce and his wife make an attempt to travel in an RV. The origins of the saying, "your hair looks like a cat sucked on it." How you simply can't trust the drink sizes at fast food restaurants. How the phone company wrongly accused the author of calling porn numbers in Africa. A workshop where anyone (well, almost anyone) can learn to write a joke. Enjoy these and other classic columns, regaled by people who wish to remain anonymous as "hilarious," "mind-bogglingly funny," as well as "disorienting and bizarre." "What are laughing at?" people will ask you. "Fun with Stuff," you'll answer. "Bruce Smith is a comedy genius. You should buy it. Really. I'm not kidding. Like right now."

This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning about art through the ages has never been as interesting or fun as in this humorous and very informative graphic novel. As two kids give their grandpa a tour of Paris, he starts an interesting conversation with them--about where all the art they see in their lives--from the movie house to the stadiums to museums and even the subway-- started. Dad's impromptu history lesson goes back to the first Cavemen drawings to the pyramids of Giza, and by the end of the book includes Greco-Roman feats of ingenuity and the frescoes of the Renaissance. Recounted as a narrative about why different civilizations created different kinds of art, centuries of art history are explored entertainingly for young readers. Iconic works, such as Donatello's David and The Book of Kells, are included as well as architectural feats like the Colosseum. Written by a tour guide for museums and historic landmarks, the text is designed to entertain (with many funny asides and jokes) as it informs. The illustrations accurately portray the art and the artists described, with flavor and humor added to keep readers turning the page. Reproductions of the featured artworks and information about each piece are included in the back, along with a glossary of terms.

Thousands of 'books of secrets' - compilations of recipes claiming to reveal trade secrets and occult knowledge - were printed. From recipes for plague amulets to aphrodisiacs, and formulas for everything from lip balm to paint pigments, this book takes you into the clandestine world of Renaissance trades and explains why certain recipes were jealously guarded while others were printed for a new general readership. New research offers intriguing insights into the use of obscure, exotic and toxic ingredients and explains now unfamiliar or arcane techniques. Each recipe is linked to real objects from the V and A's outstanding collections. Renaissance Secrets tells the compelling stories behind the original recipes.

Book excerpt: The sea monsters on medieval and Renaissance maps, whether swimming vigorously, gamboling amid the waves, attacking ships, or simply displaying themselves for our appreciation, are one of the most visually engaging elements on these maps, and yet they have never been carefully studied. The subject is important not only in the history of cartography, art, and zoological illustration, but also in the history of the geography of the "marvelous" and of western conceptions of the ocean. Moreover, the sea monsters depicted on maps can supply important insights into the sources, influences, and methods of the cartographers who drew or painted them. In this highly-illustrated book the author analyzes the most important examples of sea monsters on medieval and Renaissance maps produced in Europe, beginning with the earliest mappaemundi on which they appear in the 10th century and continuing to the end of the 16th century.
