Book Synopsis Early Childhood Assessment by : National Research Council
Download or read book Early Childhood Assessment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-12-21 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of young children's development and learning has recently taken on new importance. Private and government organizations are developing programs to enhance the school readiness of all young children, especially children from economically disadvantaged homes and communities and children with special needs. Well-planned and effective assessment can inform teaching and program improvement, and contribute to better outcomes for children. This book affirms that assessments can make crucial contributions to the improvement of children's well-being, but only if they are well designed, implemented effectively, developed in the context of systematic planning, and are interpreted and used appropriately. Otherwise, assessment of children and programs can have negative consequences for both. The value of assessments therefore requires fundamental attention to their purpose and the design of the larger systems in which they are used. Early Childhood Assessment addresses these issues by identifying the important outcomes for children from birth to age 5 and the quality and purposes of different techniques and instruments for developmental assessments.
Book Synopsis Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 by : National Research Council
Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book Synopsis Applied Child Study by : Anthony D. Pellegrini
Download or read book Applied Child Study written by Anthony D. Pellegrini and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the development and upbringing of children has been recognized since the era of Plato. We have often used the study of children to help us better understand ourselves and our society. In this second edition, basic theories of learning and development are outlined and applied to dimensions of children's social, cognitive, and linguistic development. Pellegrini takes his readers through some of the main issues in studying development, and then introduces a range of research methods, such as observational methodology which can be used to describe typical behavior patterns of young children. The author also highlights the advantages and shortcomings of each approach; for example, how experimental research has benefits in the control achieved, but is also lacking in terms of ecological validity. Both qualitative (ethological and ethnographic) and quantitative (tests and experiments) methods of studying children are discussed, broadening the scope even further for those involved in child study.
Download or read book Raising America written by Ann Hulbert and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-01-26 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the twentieth century, millions of anxious parents have turned to child-rearing manuals for reassurance. Instead, however, they have often found yet more cause for worry. In this rich social history, Ann Hulbert analyzes one hundred years of shifting trends in advice and discovers an ongoing battle between two main approaches: a “child-centered” focus on warmly encouraging development versus a sterner “parent-centered” emphasis on instilling discipline. She examines how pediatrics, psychology, and neuroscience have fueled the debates but failed to offer definitive answers. And she delves into the highly relevant and often turbulent personal lives of the popular advice-givers, from L. Emmett Holt and Arnold Gesell to Bruno Bettelheim and Benjamin Spock to the prominent (and ever conflicting) experts of today.

Download or read book Week by Week written by Barbara A. Nilsen and published by Delmar Pub. This book was released on 2004 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Week by Week: Documenting the Development of Young Children presents the accepted methods of recording developmental observations, including their advantages and disadvantages, giving educators the information they need to make an educated choice. The author also has added an overview of child development with the premise that one must know what to look for as well as how to record it. The most unique feature of this publication is a manageable weekly system to gather data on all children in all developmental areas over the course of a year, using methods that are the most appropriate for that particular development. Each developmental area is revisited at least three times. Forms for recording observation and charts for tracking these efforts, along with recommendations for making the time to invest in these important activities, make this a must-have guide and resource for teachers.
