The research is designed to assess age structure, fish body condition, and provide additional context for the adult sockeye salmon forecast. Age structure of the population will be estimated from scales of sockeye salmon smolt collected using a beach seine. Juvenile salmon habitat use will be examined by beach seining in near-shore marine environment. Findings from this project are vital for understanding effects of the commercial fishery and environmental changes occurring in the Chignik River system on the sockeye salmon population.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Division of Commercial Fisheries annually samples sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka escapements and catch in the KMA. Biological information such as age, sex, and length are collected from escapements in the Karluk, Ayakulik, Upper Station, Frazer, Afognak (Litnik), Saltery, and Pasagshak systems. In 1985, an expanded commercial salmon catch sampling operation was initiated in the KMA that, in combination with the escapement sampling, provides the foundation for preseason run forecasts, escapement goal evaluation, and assignment of the run to stock of origin (run reconstruction). Commercial sockeye salmon catch will be sampled for age from individual districts and sections throughout the KMA.

This operational plan outlines objectives, methods, and timelines for conducting sockeye salmon stock assessment designed to (1) estimate annual escapement, (2) provide information for inseason fishery management, and (3) reconstruct runs and assess stock status. The Chilkat Lake sockeye salmon run is managed for a biological escapement goal of 70,000–150,000 fish, which is enumerated with a Dual-Frequency Identification Sonar (DIDSON) system operated in conjunction with a standard picket weir located just downstream of the lake outlet. Genetic mixed stock analysis of weekly sockeye salmon harvests in the District 15 commercial drift gillnet fishery provides stock composition estimates that guide inseason management of the fishery (detailed in a separate Chilkoot Lake sockeye salmon operational plan). Biological sampling, along with escapement enumeration and stock-specific harvest data, allows for total run reconstruction required for escapement goal review. This project also supports the collection of basic limnology information at Chilkat Lake.

Results will be used by Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) fisheries managers to facilitate informed inseason management of commercial purse seine fisheries targeting these stocks to be consistent with sustained yield of wild stocks, follow appropriate principles and criteria in the Policy for the Management of Sustainable Salmon Fisheries, and achieve spawning escapement goals. This plan documents procedures we developed for estimating sockeye salmon escapement using an unmanned, or autonomous video counting tower (AVCT) that employs above-stream remote video cameras and digital time-lapse recording equipment. Hard drives are retrieved regularly, and video reviewed immediately so managers can use these data to adjust fishery openings in season to attain established escapement goals. The annual escapement indices derived by remote video are also used to refine the sustainable escapement goals for these stocks, currently established by ADF&G at 3,400-11,000 for Mikfik Lake and 2,900-13,700 for Chenik Lake.

During 2023–2026, the Russian River weir will be operated annually from early June through the first 7 to 10 days of September. All species of fish seen passing the weir through the fish chute will be enumerated daily. Sampling of sockeye salmon for age, sex, and length data will be done each Friday, and the sample size each week will be based on the previous week’s fish passage. Sockeye and Chinook salmon spawning downstream of the Russian River weir to the confluence of the Russian River and the Kenai River will be assessed by a foot survey during the fourth week of August. Multiple foot surveys will also be conducted from mid-May to 10 June to assess spawning rainbow trout.

Book excerpt: Objectives of this study are to estimate the spawning escapement and run timing of Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in an index area of the Gulkana River using counting tower methodology. In addition, sockeye salmon O. nerka escapement at the tower site will be estimated during the period of tower operation. The number of Chinook salmon and sockeye salmon passing the tower site will be estimated by visually counting fish as they pass 2 counting towers located approximately 2.5 km upstream of the confluence of the West Fork. Ten-minute visual counts will be conducted for each river channel every hour, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The abundance estimates will be stratified by day. Because counts are planned for all hours, daily estimates of abundance will be a single-stage direct expansion from the 10 min counting periods. The count schedule will start prior to the beginning of the Chinook salmon run, approximately 3 June, and continue until after 10 August when the run is complete. Tower operations may be extended to a later date to enumerate more of the sockeye salmon run if funding is provided by Prince William Sound Aquaculture Corporation.
