These comparisons will include many minor points of resemblance and difference, but the special aim will be to derive from such comparisons more general conclusions in regard to the cyclic relations of the chansons. The plan which will be followed is to give for each source, first, a resume and, second, critical notes upon the same. The resumes, though calculated to give good general views of the sources treated, are intended particularly to bring out points of special interest for discussion and cyclic comparison. Finally, there will be, at the close of the paper, a more general argument in regard to the probable origins of the legends and the development and cyclic relations of the sources studied. The sources which especially receive attention in this paper are, in addition to the Chanson de Willame: Foucon de Candie, Le Sto'fie N erbonesi, Aliscans, Les Enfances Vivien, and La C hevalerie V ivien. They are taken up in the order indicated.

Can evidence from imaginative literature test the conclusions of historians? Phyllis Gaffney's innovative book reveals contrast and change in the portrayal of childhood and youth by looking at vernacular French narratives composed between 1100 and 1220. Covering over sixty poems from two major genres - epic and romance - she traces a significant evolution. While early epics contain only a few stereotypical images of the child, later verse narratives display a range of arguably timeless motifs, as well as a growing awareness of the special characteristics of youth. Whereas juvenile epic heroes contribute to the adult agenda by displaying precocious strength and wisdom, romance children are on the receiving end, requiring guidance and education. Gaffney also profiles the intriguing phenomenon of enfances poems, singing the youthful deeds of established heroes: these 'prequels' combine epic and romance features in distinctive ways. This 1972 book examines Wolfram's use of his source material, concentrating on the episodes in which Rennewart figures. He discusses the theories about the original source of Rainouart in the French chansons de geste, and suggests that the figure sprang from traditional fairy tales, and was incorporated into the courtly cycle, in which he assorts rather oddly with the other characters, threatening to take over centre stage from the primary hero, Guillaume. He indicates the ways in which Wolfram made his poem a more consistent narrative by relegating Rennewart to his proper place, and giving him some of the courtly virtues expected of a hero by his audience. Finally, he considers whether Willehalm is a fragment.
