Book excerpt: Conventional synthetic materials, like metals, ceramics or glass, are usually isotropic substances, and their suitability for structural applications is achieved by morphological design and combination in the macroscopic scale. However, in modem engineering this is often not acceptable. As an alternative, the use of non-homogeneous, anisotropic materials, with significant stiffness and strength only in the directions these mechanical properties are really needed, can lead to enormous material (and weight) savings. This is the case of multiphase systems called composite materials. In these composites, different material parts are added and arranged geometrically, under clearly designed and controlled conditions. Usually, a structure of fibers provides strength and stiffness and a matrix helds them together, whilst providing the geometric form. Carbon fibers are among the high-performance fibers employed in these advanced structural composites, which are profoundly changing many of today's high technology industries. New research and development challenges in this area include upgrading the manufacturing process of fibers and composites, in order to improve characteristics and reduce costs, and modifying the interfacial properties between fibers and matrix, to guarantee better mechanical properties. The interdisciplinary nature of this "new frontier" is obvious, involving chemistry, materials science, chemical and mechanical engineering. Other topics, which more often are treated separately, are also important for the understanding of the processes of fiber production. Carbon filaments is one such topic, as the study of their mechanisms of nucleation and growth is clearly quite relevant to the production of vapour-grown carbon fibers.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown over metallic surfaces by chemical vapor deposition dramatically improve performances of these materials in case of utilizing them as electrodes or tribologically active materials. Proper adherence is necessitated for the purpose of lowering the contact resistance and increasing the mechanical robustness between the metallic surface and carbon nanotubes. This is attained via the direct growth of carbon nanotubes on the surface. However, a better understanding of the elements affecting the growth is essential to control the CNT density and alignment. In this study, comprehension of the effect of substrate surface properties and thermal chemical vapor deposition process parameters is achieved by observing the effectiveness of various pretreatment methods applied onto to modify the surface texture of different tool steel substrates and distinct synthesis conditions. Possible growth mechanism of CNTs on metallic substrates is discussed based on scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations. We propose a new treatment method for metallic substrates which uses hydrogen gas. This method causes the formation of dense and small-diameter nanotubes independent of the chemical composition of the metallic substrate.

Prof. Dr. Burhanettin Çiçek July 2004, 75 pages Carbon nanotubes, which is one of the most attractive research subject for scientists, was synthesized by two different methods: Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a known method for nanotube growth, and electron beam (e-beam), a new method which was used for the first time for the catalytic growth of carbon nanotubes. In both of the methods, iron catalyst coated silica substrates were used for the carbon nanotube growth, that were prepared by the Sol-Gel technique using aqueous solution of Iron (III) nitrate and tetraethoxysilane. The catalytic substrates were then calcined at 450 °C under vacuum and iron was reduced at 500°C under a flow of nitrogen and hydrogen. In CVD method the decomposition of acetylene gas was achieved at 600 °C and 750 °C and the carbon was deposited on the iron catalysts for nanotube growth. However, in e-beam method the decomposition of acetylene was achieved by applying pulsed high voltage on the gas and the carbon deposition on the silica substrate were done. The samples from both of the methods were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy techniques. TEM images and Raman spectra of the samples show that carbon nanotube growth has been achieved in both of the method. In TEM characterization, all nanotubes were found to be multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and no single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were pictured. However, the Raman spectra show that there are also SWNTs in some of the samples.
