Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemical Analysis of Lead and Its Compounds A review of the literature on the analysis of lead and its compounds reveals a multiplicity of methods, many of which are of little value in technical work of today, owing to the many operation entailed and the possibility of error attending every lengthy analysis. The laboratory of today, so closely connected with all lines of manufacture, must control through chemical analysis every process leading from the raw material to each finished product. It demands extreme accuracy coupled with rapidity of manipulation. That the best methods combining these salient points are not in general use in many laboratories dealing with lead compounds is evidenced from the numerous requests for such which continually reach us. It is with the hope that the methods adopted by the leading laboratories in the lead districts, will prove of some special value, that this work is written. In it will be found certain new methods which retain exactness with considerable conservation of time and many others of general adoption. Should it aid in increasing the efficiency of any laboratory practice the authors will feel that its mission has been fulfilled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead and Its Compounds IN the present volume the author has endeavoured to.show the great strides made in the metallurgy of lead and zinc, and to incorporate in it the latest applications of electrical science, not only in cleansing the ores, but also in their after treatment. The work also contains a description of the pigments of both metals, their manufacture and properties; and to make this portion as comprehensive as possible, the drying oils and siccatives, and their relation to pigments, are dealt with. In addition to other information of importance to the colourist, the value of the work is enhanced by a chapter devoted to the assaying and analysis of lead and zinc ores, and the quantitative testing of paints and oils. The book is divided into seventeen chapters, and is illustrated with forty drawings, specially made by Mr. Levi Lambert, to whom great credit is due. In conclusion, the author hopes the work will be studied with advantage by those engaged in the above branches of industry. Book excerpt: Lead covers the salient aspects of the chemistry of lead, its environmental impact, and its effects on health. The technical, economic and social importance of Lead, at the present time, is beyond all doubt. However, over the last few decades little attention has been given to its behaviour (the properties and applications of its compounds, the environmental distribution of these derivatives, and their impacts on living creatures), this book addresses that gap. It includes coverage of historical aspects, lead mining and production, metal properties, common lead compounds, uses of lead and its derivatives, coordination chemistry, organometallic chemistry, environmental chemistry, toxicity mechanisms, and treatment strategies for lead poisoning. Finally, describing analytical procedures for the determination of lead in chemical, biological and environmental samples. Written by a team of university teachers and researchers with extensive experience in the fields of the chemistry, analytical determination and environmental and health impact of lead and other heavy metals For readers interested in the chemistry and biochemistry of lead and its effects on ecosystems Provides comprehensive knowledge about lead toxicity and preventive measures against lead poisoning

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendious Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Compound, whose apparition proves the presence of all the elements it contains, just as the presence of any word upon this page makes it sure that the letters with which it is spelt are imprinted there. If, as the result of a defi nite series Of Operations upon some unknown body, the hydrated oxide of iron be produced, no iron having been added during any stage of the process, the proof of the presence of iron in the original body is quite as certain as if the gray metal itself had been extracted from it. If some well - known sulphate, like sulphate of lead, or of barium, for example, result from a series of experiments upon some unknown mineral, it is certain that the mineral contained sulphur; provided only that no sulphur has been introduced in any of the chemical agents to whose action the mineral has been submitted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sampling and Chemical Analysis of Iron and Steel During many years of service in the Royal Testing Bureau the authors have noticed again and again how carelessly and often quite unscientifically the sampling of iron and steel for chemical analysis is carried out. The practical man usually assumes that the material for analysis has the same composition throughout its entire cross-section and that it is immaterial, therefore, where and how the samples are taken. This assumption is often incorrect. The complaints made against chemists, in cases of bad agreement in analytical results, are often unjust because the differences in chemical composition due to segregation are frequently much greater than the possible errors in the analytical procedures. Fortunately, however, with the aid of metallography and the macroscopic study of the structure, the chemist is now able to determine quickly and with certainty whether segregation has taken place. The first part of this book shows, by means of numerous examples taken from metallographic practice, how seriously the analytical results can be influenced by incorrect sampling. Before discussing them, a brief introduction to Metallography is given with a description of the necessary apparatus, the methods of etching, and the characteristic appearance of the different constituents. In the second part, the methods of chemical analysis are given in detail. In collecting these methods the main object has been to include only those methods which have been found reliable and have undergone the test of a number of years' use at the Royal Testing Bureau. They are suitable, therefore, for test and umpire analyses. Descriptions of the very rapid "works methods" are omitted because these processes aim to give quick results rather than values of great accuracy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electro-Chemical Analysis The first edition of this book appeared twelve years ago (1890). It was published then because the writer, after many years of experimentation, was convinced that the electric current had proved its right to be classed as a reagent in the quantitative determination and separation of metals. To-day the number of text-books relating to electro-chemical analysis, to the preparation of inorganic and organic compounds in the electrolytic way, and to the various theories of electrolysis has become quite large. There is scarcely a laboratory, where chemical analysis is taught, or where it is applied, in which use is not made of the "subtile agent" of Faraday. Since the appearance (1894) of the second edition, as well as its German (1895) and French (1900) translations, numerous additions have been made to the domain of which the book especially treats; so that it was concluded to thoroughly revise the entire text. In doing this the author has abstained from any attempt to present the prevalent theories on electrolysis, the purpose of the book being of a wholly different character, and, furthermore, because these theories have been exhaustively treated in a masterly manner in special volumes readily accessible to all students of chemistry.
