However, when it comes to caring for the chronically and terminally sick, there are no clear directives in the New Testament describing how the church may minister to them. There are significant differences in the way many churches approach this matter. Even among the charismatic churches that believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit, including miraculous healing, are available to present-day believers, there are differences in the way the sick are cared for. This book investigates the pastoral challenges with regard to chronic infirmities and terminal illnesses in a charismatic-church context. This is undertaken with the understanding that many who are chronically and terminally ill in this context present poor medical prognosis and have remained unhealed in spite of prayers. Clear foundational values are drawn for defining the pastoral challenges and objectives. Three true cases, present in public domain, are presented and analyzed to identify the challenges. The pastoral-care objectives are defined, and strategies are drawn to meet these. The findings and conclusions would be relevant to the pastors, the sick and those who care for them, and indeed, the whole church. The author is personally involved in the care of the sick as a practicing surgeon as well as a pastor. Being a pastor in a charismatic church that believes in praying for miraculous healing of the sick and practicing modern medicine, the author is faced with the challenges of pastoral care for those with poor medical prognosis who remain unhealed in spite of believing in prayers; they are very close to his heart. The author provides the foundational principles and goals in the pastoral care of such situations and outlines the strategies for doing so without compromising the conviction that Jesus Christ still heals the sick.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a step toward encouraging a partnership between the church and the hospital for treating and evaluating patients with mental illness. Society is calling for participation of both in the process of healing the mentally ill and disabled. Pastoral Care of the Mentally Disabled addresses the perceived roles of clergy and physicians for healing the whole person, stressing that this best occurs when medicine and ministry are yoked. The contributing authors establish new tasks that must be developed to meet the needs of the whole person in the process of mending minds (medicine) and mending souls (ministry). Before Pastoral Care of the Mentally Disabled, there was a scarcity of interchange between religion and psychiatry. The sixteen contributors to this book encourage a partnership toward evaluating and treating patients with mental illness with chapters on such topics as: the role of faith in mental healing the more of mental health in spiritual growth personal history of Anton Boison, a leader in the pastoral care movement who suffered from mental illness practical application of concepts to a clinical case a partnership model for tending the mentally disabled Because this book encourages the working together of those in ministry and medicine, professionals from both fields--chaplains, pastoral counselors, psychotherapists, supervisors and students in clinical pastoral education, social workers, and clergy--can find much insight into healing the mentally disabled.

The fact of death thus can be considered as socially constructed fact abounded by idiosyncratic religious beliefs and rituals existing within social life. It is almost impossible to have common consensual understanding of death and dying. This book tries to investigate various sources of knowledge about death in multiple disciplines from sociological lenses.

Book excerpt: A Critique of Pastoral Care is firmly established as a classic text in the field of pastoral theology. The book is now reissued in a third edition which contains a significant new concluding chapter articulating the author's vision for the field: pastoral theology should be a lively, ecstatic theology, transforming individuals and communities alike. Such a theology will also be subtle and allusive, including doubt, darkness and shadow as well as assertion and light. Finally, it should be an imaginative, creative activity which enters the public consciousness and changes lives and practices well beyond the confines of the church. Stephen Pattison is a pastoral theologian passionately concerned for the place and future of theology in the world, and in this, one of his finest books, he advances a powerful case for a re-energized, committed public theology, alongside a politicized and compassionate form of pastoral care.
