Book excerpt: The ingress of hydrogen (H) in various high-strength alloys was investigated with a view to characterizing their susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). A potentiostatic pulse technique was applied to three Fe-base alloys (AerMet 100, H11, and A-286), two Cu-containing alloys (Be-Cu and alloy K-500), a superferritic stainless steel (Sea-Cure), and three Beta-Ti alloys (Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn, Beta-21S, and Beta-C) in 1 mol/L acetic acid-1 mol/L sodium acetate. The data were analyzed using a diffusion/trapping model to obtain the irreversible trapping constant (k) and H entry flux for each alloy. The order of the k values for AerMet 100, H11, and two high-strength steels previously studied (4340 and 18Ni) inversely parallels their threshold stress intensities for stress corrosion cracking. Likewise, the k values for the other alloys can be correlated with their observed resistances to HE according to the following groups: (1) alloy A-286,18Ni steel, H11, Be-Cu, and also alloy 718 from earlier work; (2) annealed/aged and direct aged alloy K-500; and (3) Ti alloys. The trapping characteristics of Sea-Cure could not be determined. However, the propensity of the S44660 alloy to undergo HE at cathodic protection potentials can be attributed to changes in the oxide that lead to a less restricted entry of H. jg p2.

Book excerpt: The resistance of an alloy to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is strongly influenced by the presence of microstructural heterogeneities, which can provide sites to trap hydrogen. The entry and trapping of hydrogen in a range of high-strength alloys have been investigated with a technique referred to as hydrogen ingress analysis by potentiostatic Pulsing (HIAPP). Data were analyzed by using a diffusion/trapping model to determine entry and trapping parameters for high-strength steels, Precipitation-hardened and work-hardened nickel-base alloys, and titanium alloys. For most of the alloys studied, the observed resistance to HE appeared to be determined primarily by the alloy's intrinsic Susceptibility as defined by the trapping characteristics; that is, the H entry flux generally has only a secondary effect on the resistance to HE. However, in one case, the HE resistance was attributable to a low entry flux. This type of case highlights the need for characterizing alloys in terms of both trapping capability and rate of H entry to account for differences observed in their HE resistance.

The objective of this research was to determine the hydrogen ingress behavior of high performance alloys, particularly in terms of irreversible trapping, with a view to characterizing their interaction with hydrogen and resulting susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement. A technique referred to as hydrogen ingress analysis by potentiostatic pulsing (HLAPP) was applied to three beta- titanium alloys (Beta-C, Ti10V-2Fe-3Al, and Ti-l3V- 11Cr-3A1), an alp titanium alloy (Ti-6AI-4V), and two copper-nickel alloys (Marinel and Monel K-500). Anodic current transients were obtained for these alloys in an acetate buffer (1 mol/L HAc-1 mol/L NaAc where Ac = acetate) and analyzed using a diffusion/trapping model under interface control conditions to evaluate the trapping constant and hydrogen entry flux. A marked increase observed in the trapping constants for the beta-titanium alloys with aging is attributed to precipitation of the secondary alpha phase. Aging also affects the passive film and therefore the hydrogen entry flux. The trapping constants for aged Marinel and Monel K-500 are not considered to differ significantly, but a smaller entry flux for the Marinel appears to account, at least partly, for the lower susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement reported for Marinel.

Improved resistance to hydrogen embrittlement would be beneficial to many industries including military, automotive, and high-rise construction. While other prevention methods include coating, trapping, and barriers, design efforts in this study were focused on improving intrinsic properties to be more resistant to hydrogen embrittlement. Four alloys targeting 477 – 534 HB were designed and produced in-house and compared against a commercial grade 500 HB alloy. Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact toughness and tensile specimens were made according to ASTM E23 and ASTM E8 to characterize mechanical properties. Hydrogen embrittlement testing was performed using ASTM E8 test samples electro-chemically charged in either sodium hydroxide or sulfuric acid with thiourea in solution. Results suggested that alloying for lower strength and better toughness by reducing C and Mn results in lower hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility.

Hence, this thesis focuses on fundamental issues influencing the susceptibility of three different grades of high strength steels designed for fastener applications.The present work includes investigation of mechanical properties both in presence and absence of hydrogen, microstructural characterisations and direct hydrogen quantification. The mechanical property test methodology is a modification of the ASTM F1624 standard test method to determine hydrogen embrittlement threshold in steels, which facilitates a unique approach to investigate the HE susceptibility of these steel grades. The microstructural characterisation process involves scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to identify the potential hydrogen trap states in microstructure, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Microstructural characterisation also provides useful information to predict local microstructural evolution in the presence of hydrogen and stress. Altogether, a structure-property relationship has been developed for these materials employing a comprehensive investigation process. In addition to it, fracture surface mapping using SEM indicates the mechanisms of failure associated with HE process in these materials. And finally, direct hydrogen quantification methodology using thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) provides further experimental evidence to the above-mentioned facts. Thus, in this work a combined approach involving various research techniques and knowledge has been utilised to investigate the susceptibility of the steel grades and rank them according to their performances under the influence of hydrogen." --

The embrittling effect is detected by making tension tests on sharp-notched specimens in an environment of high-purity hydrogen gas and, for comparison, tests on similar specimens in an inert gas at the same temperature and pressure. If the material is embrittled by hydrogen, its notch tensile strength will be reduced. The effect is more pronounced as the hydrogen-gas pressure is increased, but in some cases the embrittling effect has been observed at 1 atmosphere of pressure. The effect is more pronounced for the high-strength steels and high-strength nickel and titanium alloys than for the low-strength alloys. In unnotched specimens exposed to a pure-hydrogen environmental, hydrogen embrittlement manifiests itself as a decrease in ductility. Results of tests on stable austenitic stainless steels such as Types 310 and 316, or certain aluminum alloys such as 6061-T6, 2219-T6, and 7075-T73, and beryllium copper indicate that there is no significant evidence of embrittlement of these alloys in hydrogen gas at pressures up to 10,000psi.

Unexpected catastrophic failure of high strength steel structures can occur as a result of hydrogen embrittlement if the material absorbs high levels of hydrogen during fabrication or when the hardware is in use. Test specimens made of AISI 4340 high strength steel of known hydrogen concentration were subjected to a specified schedule of gentle and abusive milling and grinding operations using different machining fluids. Following the machining operations the specimens were analyzed for excess hydrogen above the base level with a Boeing developed 'Ultrasensitive Hydrogen Analysis System'. A total of six different machining fluids with different active chemical components were used in this study. Experimental results are presented with a statistical analysis of the hydrogen concentration data.
