Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive work dealing with the life and times of India's first historical emperor, and a picture of the civilization of India in the early period of the fourth century BC. The author while enlightening on the origin and early life, conquests and chronology, administration, ideals, divisions, presents the reader in the court of the first historical emperor of India, duly attended by his popular ministers and officers and acquaints the student with the rules of service and administrative departments. Land system and rural administration are surveyed along with the municipal administration of the times. Justice personified in the King appears before us along with the huge divisions of the army to maintain it. Social and economic conditions have been so elaborately discussed as to cause surprise and curiosity. As a matter of fact, the author takes the reader back to the golden times as if by magic. To render the matter easily accessible to the reader an Index of subjects, an Index of Technical Terms, three Appendices and a plate of typical Mauryan coins, have also been added. This work is meant to fill up a gap in the knowledge of Ancient India.

Book excerpt: We take it for granted that some historical figures become heroes, and others do not. Chandragupta Maurya evolved from obscure ruler to contemporary national icon. The key moment in the making of this Indian hero was a meeting by the banks of the River Indus between Chandragupta and Seleucus, founder of the Seleucid empire and one of Alexander the Great’s generals, in c.305-3 BC. This significant event was a moment of peace-making at the end of conflict. But no reliable account exists in early sources, and it is not even clear which ruler was victorious in battle. This uncertainty enabled British and Indian historians of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to interpret the sources in radically different ways. With Chandragupta representing India and Seleucus standing in for Britain, British scholars argued that Seleucus defeated Chandragupta, while Indian academics contended the opposite. The writing and reception of history fundamentally influences how we engage with the past, and the evolving colonial and post-colonial relationship between Britain and India is crucial here. In India, the image of Chandragupta as an idealised hero who vanquished the foreign invader has prevailed and found expression in contemporary popular culture. In plays, films, television series, comic books and historical novels, Chandragupta is the powerful and virtuous Hindu ruler par excellence. The path to this elevated standing is charted in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kautilya, also known as Chanakya, is India s most illustrious political economist of all time. He regarded economic activity as the driving force behind the functioning of any political dispensation. In fact, he went to the extent of saying that revenue should take priority over the army because sustaining the army was possible out of a well-managed revenue system.Kautilya advocated limiting the taxation power of the State, having low rates of taxation, maintaining a gradual increase in taxation and most importantly devising a tax structure that ensured compliance. He strongly encouraged foreign trade, basing it on the premise that for a successful trade contract to be established, it had to be beneficial to all. He emphasised State control and investment in land, water and mining. Kautilya was a true statesman who bridged the gap between experience and vision. For Kautilya, good governance was paramount. He suggested built-in checks and balances in systems and procedures for the containment of malpractices. Many postulates of Kautilya s philosophy of political economy are applicable to contemporary times.

Book excerpt: Becoming an emperor is not easy, especially when there are enemies everywhere and no one you can trust. India, third century BCE. A land ruled by powerful dynasties, each fighting for supremacy over the other, unaware that a conqueror from Greece has arrived at the country’s doorstep in a bid to establish his dominion over the entire known world. In the east, the Magadhan empire is ruled by the Nandas, a clan driven by a limitless hunger for power and given to violence and abuse. From the embers of their lust and avarice a boy is born – a boy named Moriya, raised by a tribe of peacock-tamers and oblivious of the legacy that is rightfully his...until the day he is sought out by Chanakya, a wily political strategist looking for vengeance against the ruthless rulers of Magadha. Under the training and tutelage of his shrewd adviser, the tentative young man, now christened Chandragupta, makes his way across the vast plains of Bharatvarsha to meet the famed invader Alexander and build an army of his own. But being a warrior prince, he finds, comes at a heavy price – of trust and loyalty and perhaps even his life... This is the story of a youth who must battle supreme odds – both within and without – to fulfil his destiny as one of the greatest emperors the world has ever known. This is the story of Chandragupta Maurya.

The first emperor, Chandragupta Maurya, grew up in a village of peacock farmers. His grandson Ashoka would renounce war and strive for peace. Indians still call him Ashoka the Great and regard him as one of history’s finest rulers. The Maurya Empire was ruled by kings who allowed their ministers to disagree with them. It existed over two thousand years ago, yet it had laws familiar in the 21st century—protecting workers, buyers and sellers. Today its monuments survive while its symbols adorn the flag of India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GHANDRAGUPTA MAURYA BY PURUSHOTTAM LAL BHARCAVA. Text extracted from opening pages of book: PREFACE: As a student of history I have always been fascinated by the career of Chandragupta Maurya, one of the greatest of kings, conquerors and administrators the world has produced. It is indeed strange that such a great personage should have passed almost unnoticed by historians, for there is so far, to my knowledge, not a single book in English describing exclusively his Achievements, I was aware of my incompetence to take up this task, yet 1 thought 1 might make an attempt. This small monograph is the result. In it, I have tried to describe, in a brief compass, the life and career of Chandragupta making use of all the original source! I could lay my hands upon. I have deviated from the accepted views where I found better evidence to the contrary. For instance, I have accepted the Jain date for the coronation of Chandragupta as it is better supported by facts than the date hitherto generally i accepted. In some matters, of course, it is difficult to achieve any kind of finality till further evidence comes to notice, for example in the case of the pre-Maurya history ot Magadha; in such oases I have simply men tioned the probabilities without emphasising the correct* ness of my views. Recently, there have been controversies on many points, of more or less important bearing on the subject. I have referred to them in the text where relevant, but 1 would like to mention one of them here as the text was already printed when it came to my notice.I refer to the controversy regarding the relation of the Brihatkatha to the Mudrarakshasa. Mr. C. D. Chatterji, in a very learned article, which appeared in the Indian Culture, Vol. I no 2, has expressed doubt on the authen ticity of the statement found in the Dasarupavaloka that the Mudrarakshasa was based on the Brihatkatha, and has shown at length that the two verses following in support of this statement are later interpolations. His arguments in support of the view that the plot of the Mudrarakshasa can not have been taken from the Brihatkatha are, no doubt, convincing. Yeti there is nothing to disprove the probability that the idea of Chandragupta's Nanda descent was suggested to Visakhadatta by the Brihatkatha. Unfortunately, the book suffers from the lack of proper diacritical marks for Sanskrit words as from a lew printing errors here and there. I hope to remedy them in the second edition if and when that comes to be published.

Book excerpt: The present work describes the material and moral progress which India had achieved during the paramount sovereignty of the Gupta emperors in the fourth and fifth centuries a.d. It traces the origin and rise of the ruling family to Srigupta (240-280 a.d.) and concludes with the reign of Kumaragupta III (543 a.d.). It discusses the spirit of the age and the various trends in the sphere of Religion, Economy, Society, Education, Administration, Art and Architecture. It seeks to bring together all the facts and data derivable from different sources--literary, epigraphic and numismatic, the accounts of foreign visitors, particularly of the Chinese pilgrim Fa-hien who has left a detached and valuable record of India`s civilization during the reign of Chandragupta II. Herein we get an accurate picture of India`s golden age, the growth of her various institutions, her activities of expansion, colonization and her intercourse with Indonesia, China and other countries. The work is divided into sixteen chapters. It has an index of proper names and an addenda on the hoard of new Imperial Gupta coins discovered at Bayana in Bharatpur. The work is very interesting and instructive and is designed to meet the requirements of the academic student of history and the general reader alike.
