Book excerpt: As a result of the massive refugee flows in 2015-2016, more than 50,000 refugees and asylum seekers were stranded in Greece, awaiting decisions regarding their status. Meanwhile, the Greek state itself was completely unprepared to provide shelter and education to these populations. This collection of papers presents educational initiatives undertaken by both official and unofficial agencies in order to provide Greek language courses to refugee students of various ages. The studies presented here highlight various challenges such as the teachers’ inexperience and lack of material and infrastructure, the students’ diversity in terms of ethnic, social and educational background, and their lack of motivation and sense of stability. Moreover, the contributions here point to the importance of adopting innovative and holistic approaches to teaching refugee populations. Such approaches take into account their linguistic and cultural capital, as well as the need to empower them through the learning process. This volume will be of interest to researchers, policy makers and practitioners involved in refugee education in Europe and beyond.

It aims to identify the research areas that require more attention prior to the anniversary 2020 EHEA Ministerial Conference, with an emphasis on the new issues on rise in the academic and educational community. Comprising 35 articles, this book presents an overview of the interdisciplinary issues involved in irregular migration around the world. It is intended for educationists, educators, diplomats, those working in mass media, decision-makers, criminologists and other specialists faced with questions involving refugees and migrants as well as those interested in improving the prospects of orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration in the context of promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. In analyzing the economic impact of this inflow, this paper draws from the experience of previous economic migrants and refugees, mindful of the fact that the characteristics of economic migrants can be different from refugees. In the short-run, additional public expenditure will provide a small positive impact on GDP, concentrated in the main destination countries of Germany, Sweden and Austria. Over the longer-term, depending on the speed and success of the integration of refugees in the labor market, the increase in the labor force can have a more lasting impact on growth and the public finances. Here good policies will make an important difference. These include lowering barriers to labor markets for refugees, for example through wage subsidies to employers, and, in particular, reducing legal barriers to labor market participation during asylum process, removing obstacles to entrepreneurship/self-employment, providing job training and job search assistance, as well as language skills. While native workers often have legitimate concerns about the impact of immigrants on wages and employment, past experience indicates that any adverse effects are limited and temporary.
