Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centralization Versus Decentralization of Information Systems: A Critical Survey and an Annotated Bibliography The literature dealing with the issues related to distributed management information systems is rapidly expanding. This literature may be classified in two categories: the management-oriented literature which is concerned with the issue of centralization versus decentralization of information systems and the management of distributed processing; the technically-oriented literature which deals with issues such as optimizing distributed networks and currency control in computer networks. This survey deals only with the first aspect of distributed systems. In the first part of this paper, a critical study of the state of the art in distributed management information systems is provided. In the second part, an annotated bibliography related to the issue of centralization versus decentralization of information systems is presented. This bibliography updates the one published by the Center for Information Systems Research (CISR) (1976) (1). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Conference on the History of Nordic Computing (HiNC1) was organized in Trondheim, in June 2003. The HiNC1 event focused on the early years of computing, that is the years from the 1940s through the 1960s, although it formally extended to year 1985. In the preface of the proceedings of HiNC1, Janis Bubenko, Jr. , John Impagliazzo, and Arne Sølvberg describe well the peculiarities of early Nordic c- puting [1]. While developing hardware was a necessity for the first professionals, quite soon the computer became an industrial product. Computer scientists, among others, grew increasingly interested in programming and application software. P- gress in these areas from the 1960s to the 1980s was experienced as astonishing. The developments during these decades were taken as the focus of HiNC2. During those decades computers arrived to every branch of large and medium-sized businesses and the users of the computer systems were no longer only computer s- cialists but also people with other main duties. Compared to the early years of comp- ing before 1960, where the number of computer projects and applications was small, capturing a holistic view of the history between the 1960s and the 1980s is conside- bly more difficult. The HiNC2 conference attempted to help in this endeavor.

Book excerpt: The field of Distributed Processing is eliciting a great deal of interest at the current time. The first task undertaken by the CISR research project on Distributed Processing was one of searching and culling the literature. An annotated bibliography, representing the results of this search, is presented below. Four classes of articles are surveyed, under the headings: Centralization vs. Decentralization: Issue Discussions Distributed Systems and Computer Networks Distributed Data Bases Organizational Issues Articles which we found to be of most interest (for our specific purposes) are marked by an *. 0727384 Albrecht: Organization and Management of Information Processing Leon K. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Federation for Medical Informatics has established itself as a regional body coordinating activity in medical informatics. The Congress in Toulouse, MIE-81, from 9 - 13 March 1981, is the third congress in the ser ies following MIE-78 in Cambr idge, and MIB-79 in Berlin with a gap during 1980 for the world congress MEDINFO-80 in Tokyo. The rationale behind all these congresses is the scientific need to share results and ideas and the educational need to train a wide variety of professional staff in the potential of health care and medical informatics. All the caring professions are involved, doctors, scientists, nurses, para-medical staff, administrators, health care planners, community physicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, operations analysts together with specialists from the computing profession dealing with system analysis, hardware, software, languages, data-bases and the marketing of systems. Medical Informatics is a very wide subject with ramifications throughout the health care and preventive services; it offers a key to the monitoring and improvement of patient care and to the provision of a healthier environment. The collection and evaluation of relevant data improves our understanding of the ways in which health care is provided while the availability of cheaper computer hardware and more versatile software enables us to design and implement more revealing and intelligent medical systems. Even though typical systems take a substantial amount of time to design, implement and evaluate, there is the continuing need for informaticians to assess the current state of developmen.
