Book Synopsis The Struggle for Canadian Copyright by : Sara Bannerman
Download or read book The Struggle for Canadian Copyright written by Sara Bannerman and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-02-23 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First signed in 1886, the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works is still the cornerstone of international copyright law. Set against the backdrop of Canada’s development from a British colony into a middle power, this book reveals the deep roots of conflict in the international copyright system and argues that Canada’s signing of the convention can be viewed in the context of a former British colony’s efforts to find a place on the world stage. In this groundbreaking book, Sara Bannerman examines Canada’s struggle for copyright sovereignty and explores some of the problems rooted in imperial and international copyright that affect Canadians to this day.
Book Synopsis Contesting White Supremacy by : Timothy J. Stanley
Download or read book Contesting White Supremacy written by Timothy J. Stanley and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-01-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1922-23, Chinese students in Victoria, British Columbia, went on strike to protest a school board’s attempt to impose segregation. Their resistance was unexpected at the time and runs against the grain of mainstream accounts of Asian exclusion, which tend to ignore the agency of the excluded. Contesting White Supremacy offers an alternative reading of racism in British Columbia. Drawing on Chinese sources and perspectives and an innovative theory of racism and anti-racism to explain the strike, Timothy Stanley demonstrates that by the 1920s migrants from China and their BC-born children actively resisted policy makers’ efforts to organize white supremacy into the very texture of life. The education system served as an arena where white supremacy confronted Chinese nationalist schooling and where parents and students rejected the idea of being either Chinese or Canadian and instead invented a new category – Chinese Canadian – to define their identity.

Book Synopsis With Scarcely a Ripple by : Randy William Widdis
Download or read book With Scarcely a Ripple written by Randy William Widdis and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1998-12-10 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a prosopographical approach that combines descriptive exposition, quantitative tabulation, and structural analysis, Randy Widdis determines the geographical and social origins of migrants, the distance and direction of migration corridors, and geographical destinations in both the United States and Canada. The study provides a new view of the invisible Anglo-Canadian, one of the largest and least understood immigrant groups in the United States. Widdis's results show that there were many differences between Anglo-Canadians, and that their experience in the United States was much more complex than is usually assumed. With Scarcely a Ripple not only contributes to our understanding of the dynamics of intra-regional, inter-regional, and return Anglo-Canadian migration but also interprets this movement in terms of the paradox of an emerging Canadian identity and a developing integration with the United States. It offers a historical geographical perspective on a subject that, in this era of free trade and globalization, is more relevant than ever.
