Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for graduate students just beginning research, for theorists curious about what experimentalists actually can and do measure, and for experimentalists bewildered by theory. It is a guide for potential users of spectroscopic data, and uses language and concepts that bridge the frequency-and time-domain spectroscopic communities. Key topics, concepts, and techniques include: the assignment of simple spectra, basic experimental techniques, definition of Born-Oppenheimer and angular momentum basis sets and the associated spectroscopic energy level patterns (Hund's cases), construction of effective Hamiltonian matrices to represent both spectra and dynamics, terms neglected in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (situations intermediate between Hund's cases, spectroscopic perturbations), nonlinear least squares fitting, calculation and interpretation of coupling terms, semi-classical (WKB) approximation, transition intensities and interference effects, direct photofragmentation (dissociation and ionization) and indirect photofragmentation (predissociation and autoionization) processes, visualization of intramolecular dynamics, quantum beats and wavepackets, treatment of decaying quasi-eigenstates using a complex Heff model, and concluding with some examples of polyatomic molecule dynamics. Students will discover that there is a fascinating world of cause-and-effect localized dynamics concealed beyond the reduction of spectra to archival molecular constants and the exact ab initio computation of molecular properties. Professional spectroscopists, kinetics, ab initio theorists will appreciate the practical, simplified-model, and rigorous theoretical approaches discussed in this book. - A fundamental reference for all spectra of small, gas-phase molecules - It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on the electronic spectroscopy and dynamics of diatomic molecules - The authors pioneered the development of many of the experimental methods, concepts, models, and computational schemes described in this book

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled CAVITY RINGDOWN LASER ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY OF FREE RADICALS submitted by MA TONGMEI for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in July 2004 This thesis reports studies of the electronic transitions of gas phase diatomic transition metal containing free radicals in the spectral region of 440-520 nm using the technique of laser vaporization/reaction with supersonic free jet expansion (LVRFE) and cavity ringdown laser absorption spectroscopy (CRLAS) with a pulsed Nd: YAG pumped dye laser system. This combination of experimental techniques offered great advantages in versatility of producing metal containing free radicals and sensitivity for their detection. Three different molecular transition systems were recorded and analyzed. They are the (0,0), (1,0) and (2,0) bands of the 2 2 3 3 LΦ - XΔ transition of iridium carbide (IrC); the (0,0) band of the EΔ - X Δ 7/2 5/2 2 + 2 + transition of vanadium nitride (VN); the (2,0) and (2,1) bands of the BΣ - XΣ transition of yttrium oxide (YO), respectively. Least squares fit of measured line positions of these transitions yielded vibrational, rotational and spin fine structure constants for the electronic states studied. Molecular orbital energy level diagrams have been constructed to explain the observed molecular properties in these free radicals. In addition, a setup of cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS) using tunable continuous wave diode laser and an optical cavity with ultra-high reflectivity mirrors was constructed. Data acquisition procedure is modified to extract the highest signal at a specific time period rather than to record the -9 -1 time-integrated signal as usual. An absorption sensitivity of about 4.8 10 cm could be achieved. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this PhD was to develop spectroscopic techniques using high finesse optical cavities. These were applied to the measurement of quantitative spectroscopic data for neutral, radical and ionic molecular species of astrophysical interest in the near infrared and visible spectral range. The first part was devoted to the measurement of the oscillator strength of high vibrational overtone bands of the cyanoacetylene (HC3N) molecule with the Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) technique. The second part was devoted to the study of the spectroscopy of transient neutral and ionic species. For that, an inductively radio frequency (RF) discharged has been coupled to the CRDS set up. The pertinence of this plasma to efficiently produce anions was demonstrated via the quantitative measurement of the C2 / C2− ratio in a wide variety of conditions. A quantitative spectral analysis of the radical isotopomers 14NH2 and 15NH2 was also performed for the first time. This study provides experimental data that will allow to better constraint the 15N/14N isotopic ratio in comets through the emission lines of these two amino bearing isotopomers. The third and last part of the work was devoted to the development of a CRDS scheme called Broad Band Dual Etalon Frequency Comb Ring Down Spectroscopy. This new heterodyne technique, based on the use of the microsecond frequency combs generated by two high finesse optical cavities, should allow performing molecular spectroscopy with ultrahigh spectral resolution. First proof experiments were performed and perspective's for improvement of the method is provided.

Book excerpt: Over recent years electronic spectroscopy has developed significantly, with key applications in atmospheric chemistry, astrophysics and astrochemistry. High Resolution Electronic Spectroscopy of Small Molecules explores both theoretical and experimental approaches to understanding the electronic spectra of small molecules, and explains how this information translates to practice. Professors Geoffrey Duxbury and Alexander Alijah present the links between spectroscopy and photochemistry, and discuss theoretical treatments of the interaction between different electronic states. They provide a thorough discussion of experimental techniques, and explore practical applications. This book will be an indispensable reference for graduate students and researchers in physics and chemistry working on theoretical and practical aspects of electronic spectra, as well as atmospheric scientists, photochemists, kineticists and professional spectroscopists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser spectroscopy is a valuable tool for sensing and chemical analysis. Developments in lasers, detectors and mathematical analytical tools have led to improvements in the sensitivity and selectivity of spectroscopic techniques and extended their fields of application. Laser Spectroscopy for Sensing examines these advances and how laser spectroscopy can be used in a diverse range of industrial, medical, and environmental applications. Part one reviews basic concepts of atomic and molecular processes and presents the fundamentals of laser technology for controlling the spectral and temporal aspects of laser excitation. In addition, it explains the selectivity, sensitivity, and stability of the measurements, the construction of databases, and the automation of data analysis by machine learning. Part two explores laser spectroscopy techniques, including cavity-based absorption spectroscopy and the use of photo-acoustic spectroscopy to acquire absorption spectra of gases and condensed media. These chapters discuss imaging methods using laser-induced fluorescence and phosphorescence spectroscopies before focusing on light detection and ranging, photothermal spectroscopy and terahertz spectroscopy. Part three covers a variety of applications of these techniques, particularly the detection of chemical, biological, and explosive threats, as well as their use in medicine and forensic science. Finally, the book examines spectroscopic analysis of industrial materials and their applications in nuclear research and industry. The text provides readers with a broad overview of the techniques and applications of laser spectroscopy for sensing. It is of great interest to laser scientists and engineers, as well as professionals using lasers for medical applications, environmental applications, military applications, and material processing. - Presents the fundamentals of laser technology for controlling the spectral and temporal aspects of laser excitation - Explores laser spectroscopy techniques, including cavity-based absorption spectroscopy and the use of photo-acoustic spectroscopy to acquire absorption spectra of gases and condensed media - Considers spectroscopic analysis of industrial materials and their applications in nuclear research and industry
