Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lessons learned from this flood focus on the performance of the levees, governmental responses, the effects of flood fighting, change in stages due to levee breaches, flood modeling, and the lack of information dissemination to the public on the technical aspects of the flood. These lessons point out information gaps and the need for research in the areas of hydraulics and hydrology, meteorology, sediment transport and sedimentation, surface and ground-water interactions, water quality, and levees. The report presents a comprehensive summary of the 1993 flood as far as climate, hydrology, and hydraulics are concerned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest cutting-edge research on flood pulsing and wetland restoration in North America Presenting the latest research from leaders in the field of restoration ecology, Flood Pulsing in Wetlands reflects the current movement to incorporate flood pulsing into wetland restoration efforts. Emphasizing how integral flood pulsing is to successful wetland restoration, the book's contributors provide descriptions of restoration projects across North America in which flood pulsing has been primarily used to restore beneficial hydrodynamic conditions to floodplain areas, and improve or save vegetation, wildlife, and terrain. Detailing the importance and applicability of recreating flood-pulsed conditions on floodplains for successful restoration, the first chapter introduces the concept of flood pulse and its unique role in wetland restoration. The following chapters detail the strategies and results of individual projects and the impact flood pulsing had on the projects' overall goals. Case studies detail the history of each region, such as the Southwest, including the Sonoran Desert communities and the Middle Rio Grande; the Missouri River in Montana; the Illinois River Valley; and the Southeast, including Brushy Lake, Arkansas. Also documented is the most famous case of flood pulsing used in the restoration of an entire landscape, the Kissimmee River project. Approaches used to restore specific plant and animal populations, the unique ecological concerns of each region, and the future outlook for each area are fully described. Extensive bibliographies for each chapter make Flood Pulsing in Wetlands: Restoring the Natural Hydrological Balance the essential reference for restoration ecologists, consultants in wetland restoration, government and restoration agency employees, land managers, ecologists, foresters, and geologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, historical geographers have left study of nature-culture interactions to others, most notably to environmental historians. This collection, written specially for this volume, reveals a renewed commitment by, and a rapidly accelerating research agenda for, historical geographers interested in environmental issues. Following an introductory literature review, each case study explores either the direct unplanned impact of humans on the natural environment or the deliberate management policies designed to shape that impact. 'From their stronghold of applied historical geography, the contributors to this volume demonstrate the utility of the historical approach in the study and management of the environment. It hopefully signals a renewed interest in the field by workers whose lineage is from the human side of the continuum.' --Stanley W. Trimble, from the preface.

The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book excerpt: This timely collection provides a general overview and detailed discussion of social and technical issues related to moving toward a culture and practice of sustainable agriculture in the American Midwest. It develops the concept that because agriculture does not exist in isolation, sustainability must be understood within the context of the many dynamic natural and social systems characteristic of a particular region - from climate to culture. Scholars from diverse disciplines - ecology, geography, economics, agricultural engineering, anthropology, entomology, climatology - provide the historical and contemporary context for this vital discussion.

St. Louis District Cultural Resource Management Report Number 4 written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of cultural resource surveys and Holocene geomorphological studies was conducted along the lower Illinois River valley floodplain. These projects were initiated as part of a comprehensive flood control study conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers. The purpose was to locate prehistoric and early historic archeological sites within a 45 meter wide corridor along the interior edge of the artificial levees. Field techniques included pedestrian walkover and shovel testing. Although the survey areas are very similar, environmental differences exist between the two districts. These differences include the development of natural levees, landform elevations, floodplain width and early historic vegetation. Twenty-three prehistoric archeological sites were identified. Nineteen sites are within the Hartwell District and four are in the Nutwood District. The distribution and description of collected assemblages are discussed. The potential effect of proposed levee improvements upon the archeological sites is evaluated and recommendations are presented.
