Aimed at improving agricultural production by providing a better under· standing of the interaction between crops and the environment, this book presents the latest research findings on the effects of water and temperature stresses on plants in humid temperate regions. It also covers management practices and breeding programs that may reduce crop sensitivity to the vagaries of weather.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two greenhouse and three field experiment were conducted to study the effects of elevated night temperatures on the yield and growth of a grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) hybrid. The genotype used in these investigations was the 'RS 671' (Redlan x Tx 415), an open-pedigree temperate-adapted grain sorghum. The phenological growth phase during which temperature treatments were imposed was the panicle development (GS-2) period. Experiment I, II (greenhouse) and III (field) were designed to determine the response of grain sorghum to two elevated night temperatures and the growth stage during GS-2 period when the plant is most sensitive to elevated temperatures. Experiment IV and V (field) were conducted with the same objectives as those for Experiment I, II and III and also to determine the effects of artificial preconditioning on the plant's response to elevated night temperatures. Experiments I - Plants were exposed to 26.5 and 32 C night temperatures at 4-day durations commencing from florest differentiation through bloom. The two elevated night temperatures caused significant reduction in grain yield and yield components except seed size that was enhanced (12%) by the 32 C treatment. Approximately 19%, 21%, 24% and 20% reductions in panicle dry weight, grain yield per plant, number of seeds per panicle and grams of grain/GS-3 day/plant, respectively, were caused by the 32 C treatment. The 26,5 C treatment also caused reduction in these variables but to much lesser degrees. Numbers of days to (...).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last eighteen years we have been deeply involved in a cooperative effort with our Latin American colleagues in genetics, biochemistry, physiology, and molecular biology. We have been in close contact with scientists in a number of centers and have helped to organize symposia, workshops, and so forth, in an effort to accelerate their development and make their substantial work known. These symposia in Latin America have been quite successful. The fifteenth will take place in Brasilia in 1977. At the request of colleagues, we are in the process of developing a similar series in Asia. The first very successful symposium was held in Calcutta in 1973. We were most pleased when Dr. Amir Muhammed, Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Lyallpur suggested that we hold a symposium on a topic of great importance to Pakistan, Genetic Control of Diversity in Plants, under the auspices of the University of Agriculture. It is our hope that this symposium will be followed by additional ones in Pakistan as well as in other countries in the Far East. Leadership is quickly developing in the hands of outstanding scientists in these countries, and we appreciate the opportunity to cooperate with them. We are especially grateful to the Natiohal Science Foundation for makingPL- 480 funds available which made this symposium possible.

Both abiotic and biotic stresses have become an integral part of plant growth and development. There are several factors involved in plant stress mechanism. The information in the area of plant growth and molecular mechanism against abiotic and biotic stresses is scattered. The up-to-date information with cited references is provided in this book in an organized way. More emphasis has been given to elaborate the injury and tolerance mechanisms and growth behavior in plants against abiotic and biotic stresses. This book also deals with abiotic and biotic stress tolerance in plants, molecular mechanism of stress resistance of photosynthetic machinery, stress tolerance in plants: special reference to salt stress - a biochemical and physiological adaptation of some Indian halophytes, PSII fluorescence techniques for measurement of drought and high temperature stress signal in crop plants: protocols and applications, salicylic acid: role in plant physiology & stress tolerance, salinity induced genes and molecular basis of salt tolerance mechanism in mangroves, reproductive stage abiotic stress tolerance in cereals, calorimetry and Raman spectrometry to study response of plant to biotic and abiotic stresses, molecular physiology of osmotic stress in plants and mechanisms, functions and toxicity of heavy metals stress in plants, submergence stress tolerance in plants and adoptive mechanism, Brassinosteroid modulated stress responses under temperature stress, stress tolerant in plants: a proteomics approach, Marker-assisted breeding for stress resistance in crop plants, DNA methylation associated epigenetic changes in stress tolerance of plants and role of calcium-mediated CBL-CIPK network in plant mineral nutrition & abiotic stress. Each chapter has been laid out with introduction, up-to-date literature, possible stress mechanism, and applications. Under abiotic stress, plant produces a large quantity of free radicals, which have been elaborated. We hope that this book will be of greater use for the post-graduate students, researchers, physiologist and biotechnologist to sustain the plant growth and development.
