Book excerpt: This catalogue includes works from Rama's early 1930s watercolor drawings, which anticipated debates on sexuality, gender and representation, to her "mad cow" series of the late 1990s and early 2000s, which continues her ongoing representation of forms of contagion and madness. Bringing together this unique body of work, the catalogue highlights Rama as one of the most important voices of the twentieth century and draws attention to the relevance of her work.00Exhibition: New Museum, New York, United States (26.04.-10.09.2017).

Book excerpt: Carol Rama is one of the most exciting artistic rediscoveries of the 20th century. Her creative period spanned more than 70 years - tirelessly testing different materials, styles, and media. Among other things, the artist created a body of graphic works and unique watercolors that will be presented at Berlin's Gutshaus Steglitz. This overview publication on the work of the self-taught artist is being published at the same time. The Italian artist received attention for her unique oeuvre only at an advanced age and posthumously. In the 1940s, Rama caused a sensation with the permissive and, at the time, progressive portrayal of her protagonists. In her late work she returned to the depictions of her youth. The Italian painter CAROL RAMA (1918-2015) was self-taught. In 1948, she participated for the first time in the Venice Biennale, and in 2003 she was awarded the Golden Lion there for her life's work. Later retrospectives of her work were shown at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the New Museum in New York.

Book excerpt: Accompanying Lévy Gorvy's exhibition of the same name, this beautifully produced catalog highlights the celebrated Italian painter Carol Rama's (1918-2015) engagement with the artistic landscape of her home city of Turin. Alongside color plates, an essay by Robert Storr explores Rama's examination of conventionally obscured and shamed parts of human bodies, and shows how she diverged from the oppressive social order of her time. Curator Flavia Frigeri places Rama within the artistic landscape of the city in her essay, and a text by the writer Robert Lumley explores Rama's engagement with the political scene in Turin. An illustrated chronology of Rama and the city highlights exhibitions of artists whose catalogs Rama collected in her home library, and newly commissioned poetry by Sylvia Gorelick and Lara Mimosa Montes responds to Rama and her oeuvre.

Book excerpt: As a self-taught artist who confidently forged her own path, Carol Rama (1918-2015) pursued an inventive approach to structure and composition, seasoning her art with unconventional mediums, industrial material, provocative imagery and psychologically charged legends. Accompanying an exhibition at the Archivio Carol Rama at the Palazzo Ca' nova in Venice, this publication includes full-color illustrations of Rama's works featured in the show--an unprecedented selection representing the broad range of materials and styles that comprise her iconoclastic oeuvre. The catalog also features newly commissioned texts by curator and founder of Participant, Inc. Lia Gangitano and Turin-based novelist Andrea Bajani, as well as an introduction by Maria Cristina Mundici and Raffaella Roddolo of the Archivio Carol Rama.

Book excerpt: 'To say this series is "empowering" doesn't do it justice. Buy a copy for your daughters, sisters, mums, aunts and nieces - just make sure you buy a copy for your sons, brothers, dads, uncles and nephews, too.' - Independent The women who shaped and were erased from our history. Forgotten Women is a new series of books that uncover the lost herstories of influential women who have refused over hundreds of years to accept the hand they've been dealt and, as a result, have formed, shaped and changed the course of our futures. The Artists brings together the stories of 48* brilliant woman artists who made huge yet unacknowledged contributions to the history of art, including Camille Claudel, the extraordinarily talented sculptor who was always unfairly overshadowed by her lover, Rodin; Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, who has been claimed as the true originator of Marcel Duchamp's Fountain; and Ana Mendieta, the Cuban refugee who approached violence against women through her performance art before her own untimely death. With chapters ranging from Figurative to Photography, and Craft to Conceptual, this is an alternative guide to art history that demonstrates the broad range of artistic movements that included, and were often pioneered by, female artists who have been largely overlooked. *The number of Nobel-prize-winning women.

Some gain instant fame, others instant notoriety, and more still remain anonymous until a chance change in fashion sees their work propelled into the limelight. In this nifty little book, Ana Finel Honigman handpicks a selection of inspiring artists you should know – from the iconic Salvador Dalí and Frida Kahlo, to radical activists such as the Guerrilla Girls and Ana Mendieta. The artistic mediums explored are similarly varied, with sculptors, performance, graffiti and fine artists alike. From little knowns with small, devout followings, to superstars gracing the covers of magazines, each is special in their individuality and their ability to inspire, antagonise and delight. Cult Artists is an essential addition to any art lover's library, as well as an entertaining introduction to our weird and wonderful art world.
