Book excerpt: Abuse affects everyone, and this book explores the many different levels, showing all sides of abuse. Children's Stories-Children caught in the middle of the abuse. Some have lost their mothers, a few have even witnessed their mother's death. All have suffered because of this abuse. Some have had to leave their homes and families behind. These stories are very powerful and moving. Left Behind-These are stories based on families who have lost daughters, grandchildren, friends, aunts, nieces and sometimes whole families because of domestic violence. His Story-This in no way condones or glamorizes "his side." Some men try to explain why they felt they had to abuse. Some of the men realize that it was their fault and that they need help, while others blame everyone else. More of Our Stories-More stories about women who have suffered in abusive relationships; some survive, while others do not. Some manage to escape their situations-some with the help of the courts; others were forced to escape without receiving any help. These women were forced to protect themselves and their children from their abuser. It takes a lot of courage to leave an abusive relationship. Other "our stories" can be found in Domestic Abuse: Our Stories. Husband Abuse-This section is completely about men being abused by their mates. Most men can't talk about it, let alone seek help, if they are being abused. They are afraid of being ridiculed and looked upon as weak. Most of these men have never raised a hand to their abuser. This is a side of abuse that is very rarely ever heard about. My hope is that this book will open people's eyes to this growing problem, and maybe we can all make some changes for the better. I wanted to give all of these people a voice, and now hopefully they will be heard.

Almost ten years after its original publication, this groundbreaking and practical guide remains a wise, informed, and vital resource for those who want to assist a friend or loved one in her struggle to escape an abusive relationship. Susan Brewster, a longtime psychotherapist whose practice includes working with abused women and their families, recognizes that friends and family need specific tools and ideas to help them develop a relationship with their abused loved one that will ultimately benefit her, not control her. As the survivor of an abusive relationship herself, Brewster teaches readers how to recognize the signs of abuse, handle negative feelings, become an effective advocate, deal with the abuser, and more. With a new introduction and updated resource section, this straightforward and compassionate book is just as timely and important as ever, offering the information needed to give strength to women who are trying to break free.

The medical community has a unique opportunity to intervene, but many health care professionals need more training to recognize the abuse, tools to intervene and information on where to refer victims for additional assistance. This study alerts such professionals to signs of abuse and helps prepare them to deal sensitively and appropriately with the needs of victims. The author provides vital information on the impact that examination and documentation may have upon subsequent prosecution of the batterer, while sample questions and forms assist examiners to record the most accurate information possible. This updated edition addresses new research and programs, adding information on date rape drugs, stalking, cyber-stalking, pregnancy and domestic violence, and the effectiveness of batterer intervention programs. Current controversial social and legal issues such as mutual battering, child welfare and "failure to protect" policies, child custody and visitation rights for batterers, mandatory arrests, and welfare reform are also covered. Two new chapters devote attention to domestic violence in the military and to the challenging and rewarding role of those who work with battered women and their children. New resources have been included to reflect the ever-evolving wealth of books, web sites, and agencies available to both helpers and those in need.
