The data for the study were obtained from the Quality of Air Force Life survey conducted in February 1980. The main analysis techniques used were the Automatic Interaction Detection (AID) algorithm and stepwise regression. The study analyzed the responses of female and male officer and enlisted personnel in three groups: the total population, first term personnel, and personnel with four to ten years of service. The primary conclusion of the study is that different factors affect the career intent for women and men. Career intent for female officers is largely dependent upon job satisfaction, whereas, attitude of spouse of immediate family is the major influence for male officer and enlisted personnel. Extrinsic factors, such as a high salary and the belief they can get a better break in civilian life, are important to enlisted women. Job satisfaction was also examined for all male and female officer and enlisted personnel. The results indicate that job challenge and preparation for future responsibility are major factors of job satisfaction. The relationship with the supervisor or superior is also an important factor of female job satisfaction. (Author).

Book excerpt: Basic objectives of this research were to compare the personal values and career objectives of Air Force women to Air Force men. The research used a personal values questionnaire to establish which values and objectives were most likely to be translated into behavior. Values and objectives of 307 women officers and a control sample of 323 men were analyzed using chi-square contingency table analyses. Women are found to take a more normative, less pragmatic approach to their jobs. 'Conventional wisdom' that women do not seek careers or responsible jobs was refuted. Both men and women were found to value enriched, responsible jobs. Women appeared to be at least as positively career inclined and more dedicated to their organizations than men with the same time in service. Implementations were found for policy improvements concerning participative management, personnel system flexibility, and consideration in recruiting and assigning Air Force couples. Equal sex opportunity and continued availability of quality, low-cost medical care were also highly valued by respondents. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The differences in the utilization of men and women in enlisted US Air Force (USAF) career ladders were investigated to determine trends among gender groups. Career ladders were selected from Occupational Survey Reports (OSRs) published in 1995 and 1996. The results indicated that males and females performed many of the same tasks; however, at the 5-skill level, men performed more tasks than women in all the analyzed career ladders. Women reported spending more time performing general administrative and supply duties. Men reported spending more time on technical or supervisory duties. Many career ladders were not examined because of the low numbers of females at the fully qualified worker level. In 1956, the US Air Force Occupational Analysis Program was developed to research and analyze career fields within the USAF. An operational survey program was established in 1967. Every five years, an Occupational Survey Report (OSR) is produced for each enlisted career ladder. To complete this analysis, a job inventory, used to collect job and task information, is developed through face-to-face interviews with subject-matter experts from each enlisted career field in the USAF Air Force. Then, members of the career ladder are surveyed to obtain current task and equipment data for use in developing and updating training programs. The data are analyzed using the Comprehensive Occupational Data Analysis Program, which is a set of computer programs used to automate, process, organize, and report occupational data (OSR Handbook 1993). Finally, the data are examined by occupational analysts, and significant trends and implications are reported in the final Occupational Survey Report. In 1995, the HQ USAF Human Resources Development Division tasked the Air Force Occupational Measurement Squadron (AFOMS) to investigate the differences in the utilization of personnel between military, men and women.
