Book excerpt: Church leaders and their contrasting opinions in the face of the Great War Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier, Archbishop of Malines, was the incarnation of the Belgian resistance against the German occupation during the First World War. With his famous pastoral letter of Christmas 1914 'Patriotisme et Endurance' he reached a wide audience, and gained international influence and respect. Mercier's distinct patriotic stance clearly determined his views of national politics, especially of the 'Flemish question', and his conflict with the German occupier made him a hero of the Allies. The Germans did not always know how to handle this influential man of the Church. Pope Benedict XV did not always approve of the course of action adopted by the Belgian prelate. Whereas Mercier justified the war effort as a just cause in view of the restoration of Belgium's independence, the Pope feared that "this useless massacre" meant nothing but the "suicide of civilized Europe". Through a critical analysis of the policies of Cardinal Mercier and Pope Benedict XV, this book sheds revealing light on the contrasting positions of Church leaders in the face of the Great War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Appeal to Truth: A Letter Addressed by Cardinal Mercier, Archbishop of Malines, and the Bishops of Belgium, to the Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops of Germany, Bavaria, and Austria-Hungary The eyes of wounded Germans have been gouged out, their ears, noses, fingers, and sexual organs cut off, or their bowels opened. In other cases German soldiers have been poisoned, hanged from trees, sprinkled with boiling liquids, and sometimes burnt, so that they have died in frightful agony. These brutish proceedings of the population not only violate the rules expressly laid down by the Geneva Convention as to the care and attention due to the enemy wounded, but are contrary to the fundamental principles of the laws of war and of humanity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mercier: The Fighting Cardinal of Belgium Mrs. Vernon Kellogg is one of those Ameri cans who devoted themselves to the great work of ministering to the needs of the Belgians during that period before America herself entered the war. She had many occasions to see Cardinal Mercier and to estimate the effect of his personality and of his deeds on the peo ple to whom he was a veritable shepherd when they were in danger of being scattered abroad. In her Life of him, one obtains a closer and more intimate View of his character and his deeds than one might otherwise have done had she not been moved to write this book. No one is better qualified than she to speak of his courageous work. For a while she lived the life of those whom that work so greatly helped. She knew of its need and was the Witness of its efficiency and its moral beauty, and her tal ent and her devotion combine to give us an inspiring and an ennobling picture of one of the finest figures of our times or of all times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges of post-war recovery from social and political reform to architectural design In the months and years immediately following the First World War, the many (European) countries that had formed its battleground were confronted with daunting challenges. These challenges varied according to the countries' earlier role and degree of involvement in the war but were without exception enormous. The contributors to this book analyse how this was not only a matter of rebuilding ravaged cities and destroyed infrastructure, but also of repairing people’s damaged bodies and upended daily lives, and rethinking and reforming societal, economic and political structures. These processes took place against the backdrop of mass mourning and remembrance, political violence and economic crisis. At the same time, the post-war tabula rasa offered many opportunities for innovation in various areas of society, from social and political reform to architectural design. The wide scope of post-war recovery and revival is reflected in the different sections of this book: rebuild, remember, repair, and reform. It offers insights into post-war revival in Western European countries such as Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, Spain, and Italy, as well as into how their efforts were perceived outside of Europe, for instance in Argentina and the United States.
