Book excerpt: Once upon a time girls stopped wearing dresses to school and put on jeans and tie-dyed T-shirts. It was the Age of Aquarius, when old rules of behavior no longer seemed to apply. Wallace, who has two sons of her own, comes to the rescue with a clear, contemporary guide to what today's parents should teach their children, when to teach it, and how to do so without turning their homes into boot camp. Here in Elbows Off the Table, Napkin in the Lap, No Video Games During Dinner, in the kind of knowing detail only a parent could offer, are step-by-step guides to: --Basic Training: The dawn of civilized behavior, or how to teach 3- to 5-year-olds to behave at meals, say "please" and "thank you", share, and apologize. --The Age of Reason: Refining the manners of 6- to 9-year-olds at home and abroad. --The Young Sophisticate: How to bring the manners of 10- to 12-year olds to high polish. --Manners for Parents: Everything from when it's okay to bring your child into work to privacy--your own and your children's.

Book Synopsis The Limits to Travel by : David Metz
Download or read book The Limits to Travel written by David Metz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As affluence grows, it gets easier to travel faster and further. But research shows that, despite this, the average travel time in all societies remains steady at roughly an hour a day. The implication is that people are choosing to increase the distance they regularly travel, rather than opting for shorter journey times. While this clearly offers advantages in terms of reaching more desirable locations, the disadvantages are numerous - not least that of anthropogenic climate change, to which transport is the fastest growing contributor. However, the stability of travel time does not form part of the present conceptual framework of transport policy makers and professionals - consequently, misconceived decisions lead to unintended outcomes. In this intriguing book, David Metz examines the inadequacies inherent in the current thinking, along with the resulting problems, such as pollution, congestion and noise. He highlights the impact of the rapid increase in car use in China and India, and explores the general travel experience, public vs. private transport, and transport technology. In considering to what extent travel could be avoided, he arrives at a new paradigm to underpin sustainable transport policies, based on the fundamental characteristics of human mobility and focusing on quality, not quantity, of travel. Download or read book Vehicles written by David Lipset and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphor, as an act of human fancy, combines ideas in improbable ways to sharpen meanings of life and experience. Theoretically, this arises from an association between a sign—for example, a cattle car—and its referent, the Holocaust. These “sign-vehicles” serve as modes of semiotic transportation through conceptual space. Likewise, on-the-ground vehicles can be rich metaphors for the moral imagination. Following on this insight, Vehicles presents a collection of ethnographic essays on the metaphoric significance of vehicles in different cultures. Analyses include canoes in Papua New Guinea, pedestrians and airplanes in North America, lowriders among Mexican-Americans, and cars in contemporary China, Japan, and Eastern Europe, as well as among African-Americans in the South. Vehicles not only “carry people around,” but also “carry” how they are understood in relation to the dynamics of culture, politics and history.
Book Synopsis CARS 2002 Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery by : Heinz U. Lemke
Download or read book CARS 2002 Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery written by Heinz U. Lemke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002 with total page 1196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progess in specific computer-assisted techniques (digital imaging , computer-aided diagnosis, image-guided surgery, MEMS, etc.) combined with computer-assisted integration tools offers a valuable complement to or replacement for existing procedures in healthcare. Physicians are now employing PACS and telemedicine systems as enabling infrastructures to improve quality of and access to healthcare. Tools based on CAD and CAS facilitate completely new paths in patient care. To ensure that CARS tools benefit the patient, collaboration between various disciplines, specifically radiology, surgery, engineering, informatics, and healthcare management, is a critical factor. A multidisciplinary congress like CARS is a step in the desired direction of knowledge sharing and crossover education. It provides the necessary cooperative framework for advancing the development and application of modern computer-assisted technologies in healthcare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rockport Publishing's creative engineering extraordinaire, Lance Akiyama, returns again with The Zoom, Fly, Bolt, Blast STEAM Handbook, featuring 18 STEAM projects to get kids doing, thinking, and building! There is new emphasis in education to introduce STEM and STEAM to children earlier in life, often in elementary school. Just take a look atschools' shifting curricula, the explosion of maker spaces around the country, and demand by parents to have their children engaged with STEAM acitivities. The Zoom, Fly, Bolt, Blast STEAM Handbook gives parents and kids ages 6 to 10 a selection of 18 engaging projects to build together. And when they're finished, they'll have personalized creations that fly, race, and blast off! Make an automaton, a pneumatic machine, a suspension bridge, a flexible hand, a crash-test car, a (working) vacuum cleaner, and a dozen more ingenious, kid-tested projects. This project book is the latest title by Rockport's creative-engineering rockstar, Lance Akiyama, (who you may remember from Rubber Band Engineer, Duct Tape Engineer, and Launchers, Lobbers, and Rockets Engineer) and was made in cooperation with Galileo Learning. Galileo Learning operates over 70 innovation camps in Chicagoland and California, where Lance proudly works as a curriculum developer. Galileo's curriculum is rigorously developed by a small team of project-based learning experts, including former classroom teachers, Stanford University grads, entrepreneurs, artists, and makers. Each project idea is created to support Galileo's mission of developing innovators who envision and create a better world.
