Arthur Young, whose writings are still instructive, went from England distrustful of the tendency to increase estates in his own country, and prepossessed in favor of the small holdings of the French agriculturists. But he came back thoroughly convinced that a national polity which compels the subdivision of even hereditary lands, and makes land bear the burden of taxation, minis ters to an inevitable poverty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Communism in the United States Earl Browder's book offers the key to an understanding of Communism in the United States. This work was hammered out in the very heat of the struggle of the American masses for a better life in a most momentous period of their history. It was produced in the fight for the great historic liberation struggle of the American workers, toiling farmers, Negroes, middle classes, and all oppressed and exploited. It was produced by one who is guided by the scientific theory of Marxism-Leninism and by its great masters - Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin. Very appropriately, Browder's book opens with the famous Manifesto of the Communist Party of the United States adopted at its 8th National Convention, held in April, 1934. In a concrete and convincing way, this historic document shows that there is only one way out of the present state of insecurity, unemployment, mass misery and untold suffering, oppression, capitalist reaction, fascism and war. It is the revolutionary way, the Bolshevik way, the way of the Socialist Revolution and Soviet Power in the United States. Millions of American toilers - workers, farmers, Negroes, intellectuals and other middle class groups - are still wondering in daze and confusion at the "sudden" change to the worse that has taken place in their lives. They ask: Where has this disaster come from? What was it that has knocked the bottom out from under our feet? What shall we do to help ourselves? What can we do to ward off the coming of even greater disasters - fascism and a new war? Earl Browder's book helps us to find an answer to these questions. In chapters 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9, we are led to an examination of the nature of the economic crisis and its passage into a "depression of a special kind," the capitalist way out and the revolutionary way out, the role of reformism and how it perpetuates capitalism and paves the way for fascism, the impossibility of planning under capitalism, etc. Having gained a correct understanding of these fundamental questions, we are then in a position to see clearly the class content of the policies of the American bourgeoisie. But the book does much more than that. Its pivot is the struggle of the Communist Party of the United States to win and lead the toiling masses of this country - in the first instance, the industrial proletariat - to the fight for the revolutionary way out of the crisis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State Soviet and Party school; may at first be dismayed by the d I must again warn you that you by this fact; what is unclear at a clear at a second reading, or approach the question from a some For I once more repeat that the question is so complex has been so confused by bourgeois scholars and wri that anybody who desires to study it seriously and ma it independently must attack it several times, return to again and again and consider it from various angles in order to attain a clear and firm understanding of it. And it will be all the easier to return to this question because it is such a fundamental, such a basic question of all politics, and because not only in such stormy and revolutionary times as the present, but even in the most peaceful times, you will come across it every day in any newspaper in connection with any economic or political question. Every day, in one connection or another, you will be returning to the question: what is the state, what is its nature, what is its significance and what is the attitude of our Party, the party that is fighting for the overthrow of capitalism, the Communist Party - what is its attitude to the state? And the chief thing is that as a result of your reading, as a result of the talks and lectures you will hear on the state, you should acquire the ability to approach this question independently, since you will be meeting with it on the most diverse occasions, in connection with the most trifling questions, in the most unexpected conjunctures, and in discussions and disputes with Opponents. Only when you learn to find your way about independently in this question may you consider yourself sufficiently confirmed in your convictions and able with sufficient success to defend them against anybody and at any time. The whole working class, therefore, does not belong to the party, but its best and most energetic members does. These members lead the others. To the workers' party (the Bolsheviki) the best workers and peasants attach them selves; to the party of the landlords and capitalists Party of Peoples' Freedom the most ener getic landlords, capitalists, and their servants: lawyers, professors, officers, etc., belong. Consequently every party represents the most thoughtful members of its class. There fore, a landlord or capitalist, who is in an organized party, can better fight workers and peasants than one who is not. Similarly, organized workers can more successfully fight capitalists and landlords than those who are unorganized. The former have reflected upon the aims and the interests of the working class; they know how these interests can best be served; and they know the shortest way to their goal All those aims which a party strives to realize, while representing the interests of its floss, constitute a party program. In the program is therefore shown what a cer tain class aspires to. In the program of the Communist Party is consequently shown what the workers and poor peasants strive for. A program is a most important thing for a party. From a program we can always ascertain whose interests are represented by the party to whichthe program belongs. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, all eyes turned to the momentous changes in Russia, as the world's largest country was transformed into the world's newest democracy. But the heroic images of Boris Yeltsin atop a tank in front of Moscow's White House soon turned to grim new realities: a currency in freefall and a war in Chechnya; on the street, flashy new money and a vicious Russian mafia contrasted with doctors and teachers not receiving salaries for months at a time. If this was what capitalism brought, many Russians wondered if they weren't better off under the communists. This new society did not just appear ready-made: it was created by a handful of powerful men who came to be known as the oligarchs and the young reformers. The oligarchs were fast-talking businessmen who laid claim to Russia's vast natural resources. The young reformers were an elite group of egghead economists who got to put their wild theories into action, with results that were sometimes inspiring, sometimes devastating. With unparalleled access and acute insight, Chrystia Freeland takes us behind the scenes and shows us how these two groups misused a historic opportunity to build a new Russia. Their achievements were considerable, but their mistakes will deform Russian society for generations to come. Along with a gripping account of the incredible events in Russia's corridors of power, Freeland gives us a vivid sense of the buzz and hustle of the new Russia, and inside stories of the businesses that have beaten the odds and become successful and profitable. She also exposes the conflicts and compromises that developed when red directors of old Soviet firms and factories yielded to -- or fought -- the radically new ways of doing business. She delves into the loophole economy, where anyone who knows how to manipulate the new rules can make a fast buck. Sale of the Century is a fascinating fly-on-the-wall economic thriller -- an astonishing and essential account of who really controls Russia's new frontier.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Road Ahead: A Primer of Capitalism and Socialism A Brilliant American editor has recently written that a period of great change in this country "is not only indicated; it is certain." We in America will soon find ourselves "in one of the great periods of reorganization and pioneering." Other countries have already entered that era. The old generations of Americans have given little attention to social pioneering. They have sought to build up the nation's power to produce and have let it go at that. On the question of distribution they have adopted a policy of drift. Many of these problems will be left for solution to the generation of boys and girls, young men and women, now in the schools and colleges of the country. This generation should begin now to prepare themselves for the great task ahead. This little primer is a modest attempt to help them to make a start in that preparation. It was written chiefly for boys and girls from the seventh to the tenth grades, the higher grades in grammar schools and the lower grades in high schools. It is hoped, however, that interest will not be confined to these groups. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Communist Manifesto, originally titled Manifesto of the Communist Party (German: Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei) is a short 1848 book written by the German Marxist political theorists Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. It has since been recognized as one of the world's most influential political manuscripts. Commissioned by the Communist League, it laid out the League's purposes and program. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and present) and the problems of capitalism, rather than a prediction of communism's potential future forms. The book contains Marx and Engels' Marxist theories about the nature of society and politics, that in their own words, "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles." It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism.

Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Capital: A Critique of Political Economy; The Process of Capitalist Production The present volume consists, mainly, of the first nine chap ters of Volume I., -of Marx's Capitol, which are now, not for the first time, however, reprinted. These chapters have long been recognized to contain the theoretical part of the Marxian system, in so far as it applies to political economy, i.e., the laws of value surplus - value, and money. Former editions being now out of print, or otherwise unobtainable, it is considered desirable to issue the present book, which is in tended to be used as a text - book for economic classes and the like, as being more convenient to the needs of group - stu dents than the bulky volume of Capital, and, particularly in view of the uniform non-success which has attended the numerous attempts to popularize, or simplify Capital, more desirable than these. The practical application of the theories here expounded must, of course, be studied in the complete work, and in the voluminous post-marxian literature. One thing more: Marx ian economics can be understood only, and should be studied only as forming part of a complete whole - a system - which has been called, not very happily, the Socialist Philosophy. For this reason there has been included the famous 32nd chapter of Capital, and the following extract from the preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy, is presented as indicating the manner in which Marx himself approached this problem.
