Book excerpt: "A literature review was conducted on the physical and chemical properties of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBS), their concentrations in the marine environment, their fate and persistence, their bioaccumulation, and their toxicity to marine biota. The information is summarized in this publication. From it, a Canadian water quality guideline is developed for PCBs to ensure the protection and maintenance of marine aquatic biota"--Abstract.

This is the first book to address the application of the current risk assessment paradigm from the National Research Council to coastal and estuarine environments. It provides the necessary applications for modifying the paradigm and shows how to use it to perform an effective assessment. Topics include: fate and bioavailability of organic compounds, emerging contaminants, effects of populations, effects to marine mammals, risk from multiple stressors, European approaches to risk assessment, effects of land use, and more.

Book excerpt: DNAPL Site Evaluation covers long-term contamination of ground water by DNAPL (dense non-aqueous phase liquids) chemicals. The book develops a framework for planning and implementing DNAPL site characterization activities. It provides detailed methods to identify, characterize, and monitor sites and analyzes their utility, limitations, risks, availability, and cost. Methods to interpret contaminant fate and transport are identified, and new site characterization methods are assessed. DNAPL Site Evaluation will maximize the cost-effectiveness of site investigation/remediation by providing the best information available to describe and evaluate methods to be used for determining the presence, fate, and transport of subsurface DNAPL contamination. The book will be a useful reference for groundwater professionals and environmental regulatory personnel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The study of estuaries and coasts has seen enormous growth in recent years, since changes in these areas have a large effect on the food chain, as well as on the physics and chemistry of the ocean. As the coasts and river banks around the world become more densely populated, the pressure on these ecosystems intensifies, putting a new focus on environmental, socio-economic and policy issues. Written by a team of international expert scientists, under the guidance of Chief Editors Eric Wolanski and Donald McClusky, the Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science, Ten Volume Set examines topics in depth, and aims to provide a comprehensive scientific resource for all professionals and students in the area of estuarine and coastal science Most up-to-date reference for system-based coastal and estuarine science and management, from the inland watershed to the ocean shelf Chief editors have assembled a world-class team of volume editors and contributing authors Approach focuses on the physical, biological, chemistry, ecosystem, human, ecological and economics processes, to show how to best use multidisciplinary science to ensure earth's sustainability Provides a comprehensive scientific resource for all professionals and students in the area of estuarine and coastal science Features up-to-date chapters covering a full range of topics

This book was released on 1996 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the analytical results and spatial trends for the following contaminants in bottom sediment samples collected from northern Alberta rivers in 1994-95: polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, resin acids, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated phenolics, polychlorinated biphenyls, extractable organic halides, toxaphene, and mercury. Sampling locations were chosen to provide broad coverage of both the Athabasca and Peace river basins, coverage of key mixing zones downstream from four pulp mills, and replication with locations sampled previously. The 1994-95 survey objectives included: determination of within-site variability in bottom sediment contamination; testing of the assumption that the sand fraction is not an important repository of contaminants; and providing a data set for comparison with earlier bottom sediment collections in 1988-89 and 1992.
