Book excerpt: Photography can be seen to take on a self-assigned role of remembrance, recuperation and salvage, in turning its back resolutely on the spaces of transformation and the spectacle of change. As we go through Leena Kejriwal's photographs of Calcutta, we see how such a charge of recovering an old Calcutta unfolds itself in all its detail and depth, how she subtly excavates the past in the present, and in the process, presents a very different ethnography of the contemporary city. Author Biography As a fine art photographer, Kejriwal is a licentiate member of the British Institute of Professional Photographers (LBIPP). She designed the book cover for Sahitya Akademi award winning novel, Kalikatha Via Bypass, 1999, for Alka Sarogi, and created a series of fine art photographs for the Hyatt Regency in Calcutta and Mumbai in 2001. She has tried to capture the essence of spaces like Flury's for the Apeejay group, and Shiva on the streets of Mumbai for a book conceptualized by Rajiv Sethi, besides life in a brothel for an NGO working against human trafficking. Her oeuvre includes work in villages around Calcutta, documenting craft-based cottage industries. She has had four solo shows depicting life on the streets, Kalikatha, 2002,A Still Symphony, 2003,A Life of its Own, 2003 and 2004. Kejriwal was the Brand Ambassador for Fuji Film, India in 2005, and an artist-in-residence in France (under the Indo French cultural exchange programme) in 2005-06. An exhibition of her works depicting life there is currently traveling in India.

Book excerpt: A revisitation into the standard solutions--improved housing, increased job creation, and intervention of social services--normally prescribed for the problems of Calcutta. Suggests that such initiatives have little effect on the problems of poverty, and that successful solutions must draw on the inherent strength of character, ingenuity, and vitality of the impoverished people themselves. Based on historical and anthropological findings, and the author's visits to the slums of Calcutta. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... PART 11. CHAPTER I. TWENTIETH CENTURY CALCUTTA. Calcutta, the chief city of Bengal, the seat of the Supreme Government, and the Metropolis of India, stands in Lat. 22 33' N., and Long. 88 23' E. It is situated about 100 miles from the sea on the left bank of the western branch of the Ganges, called by Europeans the Hooghly and by the people of the country, who reverence it as a holy stream, "Mother Ganges" or the Bhagiratti. The main stream of the Ganges has, as a matter of fact, long since deserted this part of its delta, and now reaches the sea through the Hurringotta and the Megna, far to the eastward. But according to native tradition, the Hooghly was once the sacred stream, and an old temple which, till a few years ago, stood near the tank to the south of the Aliporc Jail, and was believed to be 600 years old, is said to have been built on the bank of the Ganges, which at that time followed the line of Tolly's Nullah past Kalighat. The width of the Hooghly at Armenian Ghat is about 600 yards, but at other parts it widens to nearly a mile. Calcutta occupies a space along the bank of the river of about 4 miles, estimated from Chitpore on the north, to Kidderpore on the south, and with an average width of a mile and a half from east to west, that is, from the river bank to the Circular Road, which forms the eastern boundary. The area may be put at seven square miles, and the length of roads in the town is about 120 miles. The ground on which Calcutta is built is a part of the alluvial deposits of the Gangetic delta, and is elevated not more than 16 or 18 feet above the mean sea level. Excavations that have been made for tanks and foundations shew that to a depth of about 40 feet the surface formation is an alternation...

Book excerpt: In 1999, Amit Chaudhuri returned with his family to Calcutta. He did so tentatively. Calcutta was where his parents had moved after retirement; it was the city he had loved in his youth and in whose lanes he had spent tranquil childhood holidays; one he had made his name writing about. But that Calcutta had receded and another had taken its place. Calcutta is Chaudhuri’s account of two years (2009–11) in the great metropolis. Using the idea of return and the historical elections of 2011 as his fulcrum, he travels between the nineteenth century, when the city burst with a new vitality, to the twenty-first century, when, utterly changed, it seems to be on the verge of another turn. Along the way Chaudhuri evokes all that is most particular and extraordinary about the city—from its houses with their slatted windows to its effervescent cultural life. He paints, too, an acute, often ironic picture of life in the city today—of its malls and restaurants, its fitful attempts to embrace globalisation, its middle class who leave and then return reluctantly, its bygone aristocracy, and its poor. Lyrical, brilliantly observed, and profound, Calcutta is, among other things, an extraordinary meditation on the problem of living in, understanding, and imagining a city. It is a masterpiece, and one of the great books written about this unforgettable metropolis.

Book excerpt: "Long before Calcutta was 'discovered' by Job Charnock, it thrived by the Hugli since times immemorial. This book, and its companion Colonial Calcutta, is a biographical account of the when, the how and the what of a global city and its emergence under colonial rule in the 1800s. Ranjit Sen traces the story of how three clustered villages became the hub of the British Empire and a centre of colonial imagination. He examines the historical and geopolitical factors that were significant in securing its prominence, and its subsequent urbanization which was a colonial experience without an antecedent. Further, it sheds light on Calcutta's early search for identity--how it superseded interior towns and flourished as the seat of power for its hinterland; developed its early institutions, while its municipal administration slowly burgeoned. A sharp analysis of the colonial enterprise, this volume lays bare the underbelly of the British Raj. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of modern history, South Asian history, urban studies, British Studies and area studies"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is the city represented through literature from the post-colonies? This book searches for an answer to this question, by keeping its focus on India—from after Independence to the millennia. How does the urban space and the literature depicting it form a dialogue within? How have Indian cities grown in the past six decades, as well as the literature focused on it? How does the city-lit depart from organic realism to dissonant themes of “reclamation”? Most importantly—who does the city (and its narratives) belong to? Through the juxtaposition of critical theories, sociological data, urban studies and variant literary works by a wide range of Indian authors, this book is divided into four temporal phases: the nation-building of the 50–60s, the dictatorial 70s, the neoliberalization of the 80–90s and the early 2000s. Each section covers the dominant socio-political thematics of the time and its effect on urbanism along with historical data from various resources, followed by an analysis of contemporaneously significant literary works—novel, short stories, plays, poetry and graphic novel. Each chapter comments on how literature, perceived as a historical phenomenon, frames real and imagined constructs and experiences of cities. To give the reader a more expansive idea of the complex nature of city-lit, the literary examples abound not only “Indian Writings in English,” but vernacular, cult-works as well with suitable translations. With its focus on philosophy, urban studies and a unique canon of literature, this book offers elements of critical discussion to researchers, emergent university disciplines and curious readers alike.

Book excerpt: Did you know that Kolkata has the country’s largest library? The city gave India its first printing press. The first foreign-recognised educational institution was also in Kolkata. The first lift (a squirrel cage one) was inaugurated in the city of joy. A large number of Nobel-nominated people and institutions are also from Kolkata. It’s not just the Oriental connection which people link with Kolkata, it has stories of many religions, cultures, stalwarts, freedom struggle, education, architecture, nationalism, literature, sports, science, revolts and languages. This has attracted many, insiders as well as outsiders, to the city. As an outsider to the city, the history bug caught the author as soon as he landed in Kolkata. The weekend habit of discovering the city has resulted in this novel where the author cherry-picks 21 places in and around Kolkata. He expects incremental awareness and eagerness towards these facets of history in particular and a sense of respect for all-historical elements of this great city in general.

Book excerpt: In the popular imagination, Calcutta is a packed and pestilential sprawl, made notorious by the Black Hole and the works of Mother Teresa. Kipling called it a City of Dreadful Night, and a century later V.S. Naipaul, Gunter Grass and Louis Malle revived its hellish image. This is the place where the West first truly encountered the East. Founded in the 1690s by East India Company merchants beside the Hugli River, Calcutta grew into India's capital during the Raj and the second city of the British Empire. Named the City of Palaces for its neoclassical mansions, Calcutta was the city of Clive, Hastings, Macaulay and Curzon. It was also home to extraordinary Bengalis such as Rabindranath Tagore, the first Asian Nobel laureate, and Satyajit Ray, among the geniuses of world cinema. Above all, Calcutta (renamed Kolkata in 2001) is a city of extremes, where exquisite refinement rubs shoulders with coarse commercialism and political violence. Krishna Dutta explores these multiple paradoxes, giving personal insight into Calcutta's unique history and modern identity as reflected in its architecture, literature, cinema and music. Book excerpt: In 1820, an unusual letter was published in the Bengali newspaper Samachar Darpan. It was a plaintive appeal from the rats of the city of Calcutta saying they were being unfairly displaced from their ancient dwellings. Calcutta was indeed going through momentous changes - new roads and neighborhoods were being planned, channels for draining were being dug, new structures were coming up and existing buildings refurbished. These changes were not random. A new spatial order was coming into its own backed by the powerful ideology of town planning. Planning encompassed not only the regulation of physical spaces, but also the multiple concerns of health, policing, and commerce. Planning happened largely in the guise of 'improvement' and the intervention of the colonial government was important. Despite resistance and skepticism, and some reversals, the task of imposing a rational urban order on the city continued. The history of this colonial initiative can be traced through three sets of archival documents which have so far been sparingly used by historians of Calcutta. Lord Wellesley began the process with his prescriptive Minute on Calcutta in 1803, which led to the setting up of the Lottery Committee in 1817 - so called because funds for the city were raised through public lotteries. The investigation of the Fever Hospital Commission followed in the 1830s and, as the name suggests, the locations of epidemic fevers determined areas for urban restructuring. The Municipality, throughout the second half of the nineteenth century, had to reckon with bustis which housed the labouring poor. But it was only after the plague epidemic in 1897 that an autonomous organization to plan the city came into being: the Calcutta Improvement Trust was set up in 1911.This book examines and assesses the continuity of colonial urban policy and its impact, particularly in terms of the social costs to the displaced population and its implications for understanding planning history generally.

Published to accompany an exhibition of the same title at The British Library, its illustrations are drawn mainly from the collection of plans, prints and drawings at the India Office Library and 25 are reproduced in colour.
