Book excerpt: In Everyday Sacrament: The Messy Grace of Parenting Laura Kelly Fanucci sees the Catholic sacraments through the smudged and sticky lens of life with little ones. From dinnertime chaos to bath-time giggles to never-ending loads of laundry, Laura stumbles into the surprising truth of what the seven sacraments really mean: that God is present always, even in the messes of motherhood. A spiritual memoir of parenting’s early years and a sacramental theology rooted in family life, Everyday Sacrament offers an honest, humorous, and hopeful look at ordinary moments as full of grace.

Book excerpt: Seeing God's hand in the everyday: 40 reflections to boost your spirit. "Before I could take one timid step towards him, Jesus leapt up and came running with his arms outstretched. 'Where have you been?' he shouted joyously. 'I've missed you!' "I was totally melted. I forgot my careful prayer and spent the next hour laughing, crying and worshipping. It was one of the most precious hours in my life. Sometime during that hour he lovingly chided me, 'Why do you shut me up here in your room? Let me come with you when you walk to the school, or when you go shopping. I can be with you when you tend to the baby in the night, when you are cleaning and ironing.'" Designed to be read as a quick pick-me-up, these meditations will prove an ideal way to start or end a busy day. Wendy's gentle, cheerful style combines a keen eye for detail with moments of profundity. Her underlying theme is gratitude.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, the book of Exodus treats of the deliverance of Israel from Egypt; but viewed doctrinally, it deals with redemption. Just as the first book of the Bible teaches that God elects unto salvation, so the second instructs us how God saves, namely, by redemption. Redemption, then, is the dominant subject of Exodus. Following this, we are shown what we are redeemed for-worship, and this characterizes Leviticus, where we learn of the holy requirements of God and the gracious provisions He has made to meet these. In Numbers we have the walk and warfare of the wilderness, where we have a typical representation of our experiences as we pass through this scene of sin and trial-our repeated and excuseless failures, and God's long-sufferance and faithfulness.

Book excerpt: Nicholas Sayers, needing money for college, takes a job as assistant to infamous photographer Damian Wolfe. It's just taking pictures, right? Wrong. While Nick has never questioned what kind of man he is or what he truly wants in life, working for Damian during a BDSM photo shoot opens his eyes to all sorts of sexual possibilities, and many of them include the handsome Mr. Wolfe. Damian has serious doubts about getting involved with a younger man who knows nothing about the BDSM lifestyle, but Nick's adventurous and humorous approach to new experiences is far too alluring to resist. Although he knows it might be a mistake, Damian takes Nick into his life. Flirting on the edges of control, submission, and pain excites Nick more than he would have ever dreamed possible. With Damian, Nick learns about his own deeply hidden desires and finds out that relinquishing control doesn’t make him weak—having someone else in control of his sexual pleasure simply heightens it. And the reverse is true for Damian: Control turns him on. So they set out to explore these sensual boundaries together, neither expecting to find love along the way.

Ronald Reagan is one of the most popular and beloved of modern presidents, and one of the greatest presidents in America’s history. But to most scholars, biographers, and critics, the man is still an enigma. What has made him so admired and so successful in all walks of life? The answer is simple. Even when he was the most powerful man in the world, Reagan put his faith and hope in a higher power. An uplifting biography of America’s fortieth president, Hand of Providence takes a decisive look at the powerful impact Reagan’s faith had on his ideas, motives, and actions. With warmth and insight, Mary Beth Brown delves into Reagan’s spiritual journey—through all of his doubts and despair and ultimate conviction. Brown offers profound stories of God’s provision in Reagan’s life—from first making it as an actor to winning the presidency, from surviving an assassination attempt to eventually changing the face of politics and the world.

The novel is actually a collection of reminiscences of the new minister at the small place, his work and relationship with people in the parish on the other hand and his rising love for the daughter in Oldastle Hall on the other hand. It is fascinating to observe how a vicar's life looked like and how he dealt with certain situations in order to bring his people towards God. "The Seaboard Parish" is the sequel to The Annals and it is the second part of the trilogy. The story of a vicar Harry Walton continues with bringing on some of the new characters, firstly Mr. Percival, a struggling artist who steals the heart of a vicar's daughter, young Ethelwyn. "The Vicar's Daughter" is the third and final part of the trilogy. It is a fictional autobiography narrated by Ethelwyn Percivale, whose father is a gentle, intelligent clergyman. Wynnie has a happy childhood and falls in love with a struggling painter. The book is a series of anecdotes, involving both Wynnie and her family and also her increasing circle of friends, including an extraordinary Miss Marion Clare, a fine young lady who decides to live among the poor and tend to their spiritual needs. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors. G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As poker theory develops, the field is becoming more abstruse and mathematical; gradually becoming less accessible to the layperson. The Intelligent Poker Player by Philip Newall aims to reverse this trend by presenting a cohesive and sophisticated method of play in plain English. This approach, in principle, can be used to analyze any form of poker, although this book mainly shows applications in the popular forms of limit and no-limit hold 'em. The Intelligent Poker Player is also the first book to discuss the emergent field of artificial poker intelligence - otherwise known as poker robots. The best computers are capable of playing heads-up limit hold 'em at a world class level, and this book deconstructs some interesting features of their play. And finally, professional poker is a risky career choice. So in addition to the strategy chapters which include topics such as ôInformation Hiding,ö ôMiddle Game Concepts,ö and ôNo-Limit Hold 'em: Applications and Extensions,ö the author will show how to mitigate avoidable risks with topics such as ôBankroll Management and Shot Selection,ö ôRisk Preferences,ö ôPsychological Biases,ö ôInvesting,ö and ôPredicting Future Poker Returns.ö Book jacket.
