Book excerpt: Tim Phillips has been a journalist for 20 years, and during that time he has been slowly driven crazy by bad spokespeople: the jargon, the evasiveness, the inability to make a point or to answer a direct question. Now that every company has a small army dedicated to communications, the problem seems to be getting worse. That's why we should stop thinking about spin and management, and start concentrating on talking like human beings. Is this possible? Talk Normal is an attempt to find out. Based on the author's blog, www.talknormal.co.uk it's full of excruciating examples of corporate jargon, and it will help you to steer a path to better communication, whilst coping with the worst excesses of management speak at work.

Book excerpt: Are you interested in baking someone into a process at work? Leading a paradigm shift? Or maybe you just feel like drilling down after a nice data dump so you can flesh out a straw dog to help everyone get their ducks in a row and sing from the same song-sheet. Whether you understood any of that or had no idea what you just read, you've probably heard these expressions lobbed around the corporate world with some regularity. What does all of this mean? In meetings on his first job out of college, James Sudakow found himself struggling to pick up a bizarre new language: corporate-speak. He pretended to know what they were saying, but in actuality, he had no idea what expressions like "singing from the same song sheet" or "picking the low hanging fruit" meant or why strange phrases like these were being used to talk about business operations. Had he missed something important in his education that would have prepared him for this? With time, Sudakow adapted to the language; and much to his own embarrassment, he found himself actually using many of these same expressions. For his own sanity, he came up with a plan to combat this corporate-speak language - and it all started with a whiteboard in his office. He listed all of the words and phrases his colleagues, even superiors, were not allowed to use in his office - less they allowed themselves to be subjected to some form of office hazing. "I wondered if we all knew how ridiculous we sounded using these generally weird phrases, instead of just speaking in plain English." Sudakow says."I wanted to call attention to the way we were all communicating and see if we could change it." Ironically, not only did his experiment not deter their use of any of the expressions on his whiteboard, Sudakow found that his colleagues put up with the hazing with seemingly far too much enjoyment and also began to actually, if not enthusiastically, add additional phrases to his whiteboard, taking great pride in their contributions. That whiteboard became the premise for his new book, "Picking the Low-Hanging Fruit... and Other Stupid Stuff We Say in the Corporate World," a humorous corporate glossary that sheds an irreverent light on the weird things we say in the corporate world every day.

Book excerpt: Our organizations are flooded with empty talk. We are constantly "going forward" to lands of "deliverables", stopping off on the "journey" to "drill down" into "best practice". Being an expert at using management speak has become more important in corporate life than delivering long lasting results. The upshot is that meaningless corporate jargon is killing our organizations. In this book, management scholar the author argues we need to call this empty talk what it is: bullshit. The book looks at how organizations have become vast machines for manufacturing, distributing and consuming bullshit. It follows how the meaningless language of management has spread through schools, NGOs, politics and the media. Business Bullshit shows you how to spot business bullshit, considers why it is so popular, and outlines the impact it has on organizations and the people who work there. It also outlines what we can do to minimise bullshit at work. The author makes a case for why organizations need to avoid empty talk and reconnect with core activities.

Book excerpt: Around 5,000 business and management titles are published every year, and increasingly, their preferred mode of presentation is centred on the creation and marketing of buzzwords and fads. This book argues that these management fads and buzzwords deflect critical inquiry and limit useful action because they present a 'ready made' view of the world, which rejects the benefits of theoretical analysis and reflection. Topics covered include: * the 'guru industry' * 'excellence' * business process re-engineering * empowerment * culture * knowledge work * globalization. 'Unpacking' the 'guru industry' and analyzing the fads and buzzwords, this book provides a 'critical-practical' analysis, designed to allow readers to locate, understand and critique management fashion.

Book excerpt: Let's face it, we've all been guilty of "circling back" to "touch base" with a colleague to get a "30,000 foot view" so you can create a "strategic staircase" to pick the "low-hanging fruit." Okay, so maybe you haven't packed all of those buzzwords into one sentence, but I'm sure you know someone who has. Since COVID-19 forced many of us to work from home, maybe you've even discovered you're married to a "let's circle back" guy/girl. 'Buzzwords & BS' is a lighthearted look at business buzzwords. A buzzword lover's (or hater's) bible, if you will. The book's main character, Bob Sheldon (BS), is, of course, a fictitious character, but he embodies the buzzword-loving company executives many of us have met during our careers. Give this book to the 'Bob Sheldons' in your life to see how many buzzwords they recognize.

Book excerpt: New opportunities in the global workplace have heightened interest in business studies. In response to this trend, this book presents an in-depth analysis of a corpus of authentic business studies lectures, focusing on spoken, academic, disciplinary and professional features (e.g., speech rate, interactive devices, specialized lexis) that are crucial to comprehension, but often problematic for non-native speakers. The investigation adopts an original multi-pronged approach including quantitative, qualitative and comparative analyses. It utilizes techniques drawn mainly from corpus linguistics and discourse analysis, but also integrates observational and ethnographic methods to provide unique extra-linguistic insights. The study is thus a full-circle interpretive account of this dynamic spoken genre where academia and profession converge. The book shows how business studies lectures are characterised by a synergy of discourses and communicative channels that reflect the community of practice, highlighting the need to help international business students develop multiple literacies to overcome present and future challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a fundamental disconnection between the way business people speak and real people communicate. From advertisers, big business and CEOs - the blather is coming at us in waves. The International Language of Business is no longer English - it's gobbledygook. The authors blindly discovered the enormity of the problem in June 2003 with the launch of Bullfighter, an anti-jargon software tool. But jargon is just one symptom in a larger problem afflicting corporate communications today: the wholesale inability to connect with an audience. In the form of admirably straight-talk, we discover how to avoid the 'obscurity trap', 'the anonymity trap', the 'hard-sell trap' and most importantly, 'the tedium trap'. In this witty and practical new book readers are given all the tools they need to fight the 'spin' and learn to speak like the rest of us.

Roberts and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are buzzwords everywhere in business and marketing. It's easy to be overwhelmed and swamped by them. You shouldn't fear them though; you should instead look to embrace them. You should look to create your own, or leverage one that already exists in order to become a leading authority in your industry. Ditch the pointless, meaningless jargon. Instead, focus on finding something you can stand for, either as an individual or as a business. You need to find something you can become an authority on, and add value to your audience. Whether you are building a personal brand, or a business brand the principles set out in this book will help you to become the authority that your industry needs.Marketing Buzzword to Marketing Authority is a marketers' essential guide to not only understanding the past, present and future of buzzwords, but also how you can use them in your personal brand and into your businesses marketing strategy. In order to make this book as digestible as possible, it has been broken down into three distinct parts. The first part looks at the history, current state and every-day use of business and marketing buzzwords. This will set the scene as to their importance, as well as helping the readers to understand good and bad principles regarding the use of buzzwords. This section will also explore the psychology of buzzwords, including their impact upon 'sheep mentality' (also known as herd mentality or group mentality), industry specific terminology and, examine why some buzzwords catch on and become everyday terms, while others do not. The second part dives into personal branding. It highlights how buzzwords can be used to build a personal brand, and how you can become associated with that term to the point that your name is synonymous with the buzzword itself. This part of the book includes some amazing case studies from 'The Marketing Buzzword Podcast' including Bryan Kramer, Dan Gingiss, John Espirian, Jessika Phillips, Mark Masters and more. These case studies and the included paragraphs will help you to see how it is entirely possible to build a thriving personal brand around a marketing buzzword. The third and final part looks at the role of buzzwords and terms within an existing business and marketing plan. It will look at how buzzwords can be used to bring a team together and help create a unified approach (common thread) and voice to marketing within an organisation, so that the business can become known for its association with a specific term. It will also showcase why businesses should encourage employees to build a personal brand and their own authority, which in turns, helps the business be recognised as an authority. This section will also include some amazing case studies from brands and people like Socialbakers, Yext and Express Writers, who epitomise exactly what it means to build a business with a common thread running throughout. This book is designed to inspire and motivate you to take action on buzzwords, and use them to build authority on a subject for you or for your brand. Marketing Buzzword to Marketing Authority will be your guide to becoming not only the leader you want to be, but the authority your industry needs.
