Sharp has transcribed numerous table conversations between Walter Brueggemann and his colleagues and former students, in addition to several of his addresses and sermons from both academic and congregational settings. The result is the essential Brueggemann: readers will learn about his views on scholarship, faith, and the church; get insights into his "contagious charisma," grace, and charity; and appreciate the candid reflections on the fears, uncertainties, and difficulties he faced over the course of his career. Anyone interested in Brueggemann's work and thoughts will be gifted with thought-provoking, inspirational reading from within these pages.

Book excerpt: On January 20, 2003, at 10:45 a.m., a massive avalanche in the Selkirk Range of British Columbia struck three members of two guided backcountry skiing groups and buried them. After a frantic hour of digging by those still standing, an unthinkable outcome became reality: seven people were dead. The tragedy made international news, splashing photos of the seven dead Canadian and US skiers on television screens and newspaper pages. The official analysis was that guide error was not a contributing factor in the accident. This interpretation was insufficient for some of the victims’ families, the public and some members of the guiding community. Buried is the assistant guide’s story. It renders an answerable truth about what happened by delving deep into the human factors that played into putting people in harm’s way as well as the peace that comes from accountability and the personal growth that results from understanding.

Book excerpt: This report provides recommendations to revise the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications relating to the distribution of live load to buried structures. The report details the development of simplified design equations (SDEs) for structural response based on three-dimensional (3D) analysis of 830 buried culverts. In addition, the report provides guidelines for conducting 2D and 3D modeling for design situations with conditions not covered by the SDEs. The material in this report will be of immediate interest to roadway and bridge designers.

This book was released on 1968 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objective of the investigation was to study experimentally the behavior to failure of flexible, horizontally oriented cylinders buried at various depths in dense, dry sand and subjected to either static or dynamic surface overpressures. Static and dynamic tests were conducted on 33 different cylinders, fabricated of high-yield-strength aluminum. Results indicated that collapse of the cylinders occurred while the strains in the cylinder walls were still in the elastic range. The cylinders buried at the shallow depths (zero to one-half cylinder diameter above the crown) collapsed by a catastrophic snap-through or caving of the crown. For the cylinders buried at depths of three-quarters to two cylinder diameters above the crown, the mode of collapse was an instantaneous elastic buckle that occurred at the spring line or invert of the cylinder. The collapse mode of the cylinders under dynamic overpressure was similar to that of the cylinders collapsing under static overpressure. The results of the investigation verified the applicability of an equation for predicting the static collapse overpressure for smooth-walled, horizontally oriented, buried cylindrical structures and entranceways. The hoop-compression theory was found to be applicable for analyzing the structural design to determine if the cylinder would collapse in the elastic range. (Author).

Book excerpt: Private investigation isn’t on the list of a southern belle's most desirable accomplishments—but it’s saved Sarah Booth Delaney's Delta homestead. Now all she has to cope with is its bossy antebellum ghost who is determined to save Sarah—from spinsterhood. Then comes the perfect social occasion: Lawrence Ambrose's dinner party. . . . Ambrose, once a famous man of southern letters, is planning a comeback: a delicious tell-all with a bitchy ex-model as his “biographer.” As he taunts his dinner guests with the news that his book will blow the lid off Zinnia’s darkest secrets, it becomes plain that each and every guest has a secret—and wants Ambrose to keep it. When the morning-after mess includes a bloody corpse and the manuscript of the biography disappears, Sarah Booth goes digging for answers. But many who hold them are six feet under—or soon will be—and if she doesn’t tread carefully, she could join them any day now. . . .
