Book excerpt: Bullies are everywhere, and as an employee, many of us have experienced a BU-VID 20 pandemic (BU--bullies, VID--infested, 20--for at least the last twenty years) in many areas of our careers. Bullying is not just in nursing but all avenues of employment where employees may experience bullying with no recourse to stop the bully. This is in only places of employment that do not enforce anti-bullying behavior, and policy and procedures are not enforced although recommended. Why? Because there are no state or federal regulations that make this behavior unacceptable in an place of employment, therefore, not enforceable to stop the behavior. Bosses can be jerks all they want, nothing happens to stop the behavior, and employees leave their job because of this.

Book excerpt: This book is about a young man named John who seems to always be down on his luck struggling to make ends meet, a young woman named Beth who wants to be a model, and her husband, Tom, who seems overqualified for any job he applies for.But on a rainy day in Los Angeles, John stops to help a young lady named Beth who was not familiar with the traffic woes in Los Angeles to reach her destination. Beth’s husband, Tom, was picking up a few things at the grocery store near their apartment. While he was paying for his groceries, he heard a reporter on the television at the market reporting on the lottery drawing that evening. The cashier asked him if he wanted to try his luck. Tom thought about it and then replied, “Yes, I think I’ll give it a try.” Tom walked out of the store feeling lucky and decided to have a beer at Hurley’s Bar and Grille. The television there was on full blast, and the reporter was calling out the numbers.Tom looked at his numbers in disbelief and yelled out, “I think I have the winning numbers!” Incredibly happy that he had somehow just won millions of dollars, he began running down the sidewalk and sprinted across the street to his old black classic Pontiac Trans Am. He looked again at his lottery ticket and called his wife. He listened to the phone as it began to ring. “Come on, Beth, answer your phone right now, honey.” Tom listened to her phone message, and at the sound of the beep, he spoke. “Beth, call me immediately when you hear this message!” Tom put his cell phone down and started up his Trans Am.A couple of minutes later, as Tom drove through the middle of the intersection with a green light, suddenly without any warning, there was a flash of light as his Trans Am was broadsided by a speeding car running through a red light at an incredibly high rate of speed, colliding with the Trans Am, trapping Tom inside and unconscious

Book excerpt: Workplace bullying is an area that has attracted significant press attention throughout the last decade. A variety of well publicized surveys have revealed that this is an issue endemic in working life in Britain; and, at a conservative estimate, over half the working population can expect to experience bullying at work (either directly by being bullied, or through witnessing it) at some stage in their careers. This is now seen to be a disturbing event, with something like a fifth of witnesses and a quarter of direct targets leaving their organizations. This serious damage to individuals has been accorded little direct research in Britain, although it has resulted in court cases brought under health and safety and equal opportunities legislation. The recognition of the problem and the emergence of court cases, have both served to focus employers on the need to deal with the issue. The recent strike vote at Ford in Dagenham, asking the employer to enforce existing anti-harassment policies, highlights the fact that having paper policies is not enough. Workplace Bullying is derived from the largest survey ever carried out on workplace bullying, supported by the CBI, TUC, Federation of Small Businesses, IPD, and the HSE among others. This study covered 5,500 people, but the book goes beyond it to explore all the issues associated with what is becoming a major issue in organizations.

He thinks he knows what to expect when he arrives on the sprawling, state-of-the-art facility but quickly realizes he’ll have to find his place as the rookie leader of a new team. Then he starts having visions of an imminent attack overseas, and with the clock ticking, Jed and his team are dispatched to neutralize the threat. Book excerpt: In this book, the author proposes the existence of a continuum of aggressive marginalisation phenomena, ranging from the unfortunately commonplace experiences of prejudice, discrimination and bullying behaviour, through to genocide. Attempts made by researchers and practitioners to understand, counter and prevent bullying behaviour are reviewed. A key finding has been that the success that has been accrued has been limited, especially when the case of those who belong to so-called ‘minority’ groups (who are often the target of prejudice outside of the school gates) is considered; it is suggested that future anti-bullying actions should meaningfully engage with prejudice as an underlying factor. After a critical consideration of the various psychological understandings of aggression, aggressive behaviour and marginalisation has been made, the author goes on to introduce and assess an eight-stage model of physical genocide, based primarily on insights from social cognitive psychology, and exemplified in the history of the Lakota-Cheyenne Campaign (1864–1890). This is followed by a consideration of the cultural genocide levelled against indigenous peoples (exemplified in the Sami people in Norway, and indigenous peoples of North America), as implemented through the actions of educational systems and educators. The book ends with some suggestions being made regarding our potential to address the ‘One’ and ‘Other’ mindset that is proposed as underlying the continuum of aggressive marginalisation phenomena – through the psychological understandings that we can offer, the educational practice that we can provide, and in the conscious acts of the affirmation of humanity we can make in our individual and collective choices. Stephen James Minton is a lecturer in the psychology of education at the School of Education, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. He has extensive experience in the fields of anti-bullying research and practice, and is interested in the histories and psychosocial situations, and especially the educational experiences, of marginalised people and groups.

Book excerpt: The award-winning authors of The Road to Hell: How the Biker Gangs Are Conquering Canada bring us a definitive, up-to-the-minute account of the Hells Angels and the international biker network. Marsden and Sher explain how the expansion of America’ s foremost motorcycle gang has allowed this once ragtag group of rebels, outcasts and felons to become one of the world’s most sophisticated criminal organizations. While the media has continued to toast the Hells Angels California leader, Sonny Barger, as an American legend, the facts tell another story—they are America’s major crime export. With an estimated 2,500 full-patch members in 25 countries, the Hells Angels have inspired a global subculture of biker gangs that are among the most feared and violent underworld players. Angels of Death takes readers to Arizona, inside the biggest American police undercover operation to infiltrate the bikers; to British Columbia where wealthy bikers dominate the organized crime pyramid; to Australia where the “bikies” shoot it out with police; to Curaçao where terrorist organizations funnel drugs to Dutch bikers; and to the streets of Oslo, Copenhagen and Helsinki where a murderous biker war saw rocket attacks and bombs turn Scandinavia into a war zone. For the first time, police officers who have infiltrated biker gangs tell their secrets—revealing the challenges, fears and horrors they’ve discovered going undercover. Sher and Marsden take the reader behind the latest headlines to tell the story of how the Hells Angels became so powerful, and how the police—with only a few successes—have tried to stop them. Excerpt from Angels of Death: Three murderous evenings, three different continents, three faces of the Angels of death: the killing of innocents, the killing of fellow bikers, and the killing of cops. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of lives ruined, brains fried, bodies withered by the methamphetamines, cocaine and other drugs pushed by the bikers. And yet while the body count kept mounting, Sonny Barger, the Californian patriarch and international leader of the Hells Angels, was being feted by the international media as he promoted his latest bestselling book. Even the usually thoughtful British press fell for the rebel Yankee. The Times called him, “affable, big-hearted, warm.” The Independent labelled him an “American legend.” And in many ways he is.

Book excerpt: Before the year 1989, that is, before the fall of Communism in Poland, the Communist government ordered the destruction of any documents that could have implicated them in the persecution of people opposed to the Communist party. The documents would have been proof of their ignominious actions. Therefore, they were taken away by the truckload from the archives and burned outside of the city limits. My documents were destroyed in Bialystok, as well. After turning down a job with the Polish Secret Police, they harassed me, and blacklisted me so I was unable to work. It was in Bialystok where my persecution was most severe. Nevertheless, most copies of my documents were preserved at the Ministry of Interior in Warsaw... ...The decision was made to escape immediately from the place of danger, and once again, we took what we could. Each of us, like a flock of geese with my father in the lead, slowly walked away from the river fortress toward the woods. ...The fog slowly subsided. When we reached a haystack, my father announced that this would now be our home. ...One night there came an announcement from an airplane with its engine turned off for a moment (so as not to drown out words). The announcement, made in Polish, was that everyone should leave this area because soon the war was going to be over. ...An air raid followed and the entire area was bombed... "I read it and I was touched. I finished reading Mr. Henry Czajewski's extraordinary life testament. The issues in the book are close to my heart because I know that it is not a work of his imagination, but rather a poignant truth. I shed tears when reading certain parts of this book and I was in awe of his enthusiasm, optimism, and sense of humor. What a wonderful piece of work!" -- B.F., retired doctor of psychology Publisher's website: http: //www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/InTheShadowOfMyGuardianAngel.html
