Excerpt: ...some general information as to the possible uses of waste and the scope and variety of the material already in demand may be helpful. As a good example of utilization we may illustrate from a factory using sugar maple in the manufacture of school desks. Here the small, clear, sawed-off pieces going to waste were converted into backs for scrubbing brushes. Another factory takes small pieces of beech wood which are generally thrown away and manufactures them into novelties such as small nail-brush blocks and cornpopper handles. Various odd-sized pieces (mostly edgings) of birch, maple, and beech are turned into chair rungs. Scraps of birch are made into the handles of screw drivers, awls, gimlets, and other small tools used by carpenters. Some industries consume a tremendous amount of birch in the manufacture of very small articles. One firm alone turns out as many as 50 million meat skewers and 200 million toothpicks every month. The toy industry in the United States demands about 30 million feet of raw material annually, much of which should be obtained from factory waste. Small pieces could be employed for such articles as doll furniture, circus sets, toy pianos, checkers, and chessmen. Small pieces of white pine could be converted into such articles as Noah's arks, nursery blocks, and mechanical toys. The little popgun, a popular toy, is made from the waste of the softer hardwoods, such as paper birch, silver maple, and beech. The expensive imported foreign woods should be closely utilized; if a firm has available waste such as rosewood, information should be given as to whether it is in the form of butt ends, slabs, small squares, etc. If in small squares, the exact size should be stated, such as 1 in. by 1 in. and from 8 in. to...
