Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Sweet Briar College; October, 1929, Vol. 12: Alumnae News, 1929-1930 Few things that have happened at Sweet Briar have aroused more interest and enthusiasm than the announcement, at the very Opening of the endowment and building campaign in 1928, Of the gift of a new library by Mr. Fergus Reid. A new library under any circum stances would have been a great event in Sweet Briar's life, but com ing at such a time, as the gift of an old and true friend Of the college and in memory of his mother, Mary Helen Cochran, it aroused more than ordinary interest among all those who are concerned with Sweet Briar and its future. It is natural, therefore, that the laying of the cornerstone of the new building Should have constituted one Of the most important features of the Commencement Of 1929. This event took place on the afternoon of Monday, June 3, in the presence of a large gathering of students, faculty, alumnae and the many guests who had come to Sweet Briar for Commencement, and was marked by appropriate ceremonies. A small platform had been erected in the quadrangle formed by the new library building between Academic and Fletcher Hall, and here gathered the little procession Of those taking part in the program. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Sweet Briar College, Vol. 19: Fall Announcements 1936-1937; Student Register Religion and Social Problems Religion and Social Theory The Renaissance. For each of these majors there is a group of required courses and another group of electives. Each major includes at least 36 hours in addition to courses taken to meet the general requirements for the degree, but the total number of hours to be taken within the field varies, depend ing somewhat upon the degree of advancement of the required courses and their prerequisites. These majors are planned to concentrate the effort of the student upon some subject, some idea or influence, just as a departmental major does; but, whereas the concentration in a departmental major is within the department, the focus of interdepartmental majors is rather upon relationships cutting across departmental boundaries. It is intended that these interdepartmental majors shall afford greater flexibility for the programs of students whose interest is not confined within the regular departmental lines. The student electing one of these majors is to choose an adviser with the approval of the Dean. She will-plan her course in consultation with her adviser and the program must be approved by the departments con cerned, - that is, the departments represented in the list of required courses. In addition there will-be a faculty chairman for each major, who will have general supervision over it, will consult with the advisers and depart ment heads, and assist in making the student's course an integrated whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Sweet Briar College, Vol. 21: Faculty Publications, Papers and Addresses, 1937-1938 An address delivered before the High School Conference at the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois, November 5, 1937. It is an exceedingly difficult task to tell whether schools are fitting persons for their roles in the present social order. In the first place there is not agreement on what is intrinsic and what is accidental in society; nor on what is the individual's place in society; nor on how much influence schools have in any final position an individual may take. If we consider young women, we must add to this a long standing belief, or supposition if you prefer to call it so, that women have a special place in society and we have a question so large and so vague that it is only possible to posit some characteristics for both society and women and tell in a tendential way whether schools are moving in that direction - a qualitative analysis of their work with only inaccurate quantitative indications. And yet the task seems worth trying that we may know what to emphasize, what to drop, a little better in what proportion to combine and, above all, how to approach what we do, that its validity may not be negated by poor achievement. What is a young woman's place in present-day society? First we recognize her as a thinking, feeling, acting individual, with the same need for clear, disciplined, effective thinking as men have. There are large areas in which men and women are alike, practically exactly alike, and this is an alikeness which I see more and more as I grow older. The areas in which they differ are narrow and sufficiently marked for us to be almost able to entrust to natural promptings their special cultivation. The same need is true, of course, with regard to feeling. We have always known the swaying power of feeling, but in the present day more people seem to be coming nearer to understand ing its springs, its subtleties, and some of the methods of consciously cultivating and disciplining emotional power. Then we can never forget that all of us are constantly acting either with clear thinking and discriminated emotion or without them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin, Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, Virginia, Vol. 9: Letter to Students; Students Registered, 1926-1927; September 1926 Sweet Briar is beautiful and the daily life a bit enchanting with a very direct and simple appeal, but our business is mental and spiri tual growth. The student will enjoy the life most who pursues it with an eager mind for new light on the true and the eternal, and who 80 intelligently manages herself and her time as to keep this in the first place. One of the cherished ideals of Sweet Briar is the belief that college women are capable of governing themselves and the students are trusted to maintain their own discipline. The honor system prevails, and there is no more valuable acquisition to be gained at college than an understanding of it and a scrupulous self-discipline under it. The President, the Dean and the Faculty stand ready at all times for advice and assistance. Each Freshman has a fac ulty adviser who will guide and direct her in her work, and in ad dition a student associate from the upper classes who will aid her to understand the social and student traditions and the real spirit of Sweet Briar. The Freshman class, as a whole, has a general adviser, Miss Mary Searle, who is accessible at all times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
