Book Synopsis Guidelines for Canadian Recreational Water Quality by : Federal-Provincial Working Group on Recreational Water Quality (Canada)
Download or read book Guidelines for Canadian Recreational Water Quality written by Federal-Provincial Working Group on Recreational Water Quality (Canada) and published by Health and Welfare Canada. This book was released on 1992 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These guidelines deal with health hazards associated with recreational water use, as well as aesthetic and nuisance conditions. Health hazards associated with direct contact with water include infections transmitted by pathogenic microorganisms, as well as injuries and illness due to physical and chemical properties of the water. The guidelines discuss the indicator organisms such as enterococci, Escherichia coli, other fecal coliforms, and coliphages, as well as health risks related to exposure to waterborne pathogenic bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and toxic blue-green algae. Sampling of recreational waters is also addressed. Other sections deal with physical, chemical, and aesthetic characteristics, nuisance organisms, microbiological methods of sampling and analysis, and posting of beaches and other recreational waters.
Book Synopsis Physical and Chemical Processes in the Aquatic Environment by : Erik R. Christensen
Download or read book Physical and Chemical Processes in the Aquatic Environment written by Erik R. Christensen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is need in environmental research for a book on fresh waters including rivers and lakes. Compared with other books on the topic, this book has a unique outline in that it follows pollution from sources to impact. Included in the text is the treatment of various tracers, ranging from pathogens to stable isotopes of elements and providing a comprehensive discussion which is lacking in many other books on pollution control of natural waters. Geophysical processes are discussed emphasizing mixing of water, interaction between water and the atmosphere, and sedimentation processes. Important geochemistry processes occurring in natural waters are described as are the processes specific to nutrients, organic pollutants, metals, and pathogens in subsequent chapters. Each of these chapters includes an introduction on the selected groups, followed by the physicochemical properties which are the most relevant to their behavior in natural waters, and the theories and models to describe their speciation, transport and transformation. The book also includes the most up to date information including a discussion on emerging pollutants such as brominated and phosphate flame retardants, perflurochemicals, and pharmaceutical and personal care products. Due to its importance an ecotoxicology chapter has been included featuring molecular biological methods, nanoparticles, and comparison of the basis of biotic ligand model with the Weibull dose-response model. Finally, the last chapter briefly summarizes the regulations on ambient water quality.

Book Synopsis Real-time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms by : Babin, Marcel
Download or read book Real-time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms written by Babin, Marcel and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.

The first chapter initially puts the array of spatially related problems into perspective and discusses the earlier applications of GIS and remote sensing. Chapters, 2, 3 and 4 outline what are considered to be the basics on which GIS can function, i.e. hardware and software; spatial data; and how GIS systems themselves are best implemented. Chapter 5 looks at preparing the data for GIS use and Chapter 6 explores what remote sensing consists of and the main purposes for its use. Chapter 7 discusses the functional tools and techniques offered by typical GIS software packages. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 examine respectively, the current issues and status, including extensive case studies, of the application of GIS and remote sensing to aquaculture, to inland fisheries and to marine fisheries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine, Design, Create offers a wide-ranging look at how the creative process and the tools of design are dramatically changing--and where design is headed in the coming years. Bringing together stories of good design happening around the world, the book shows how people are using fresh design approaches and new capabilities to solve problems, create opportunities, and improve the way we live and work. From the impact of SOM's Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland to the spark that inspired Thomas Heatherwick's U.K. Pavilion in Shanghai; from the new processes fueling Zaha Hadid's extraordinary architecture to the digital tools Ford is using to transform car design, each of these stories explores questions that swirl around the idea of design. How does design change our lives for the better? How is our capacity to produce good design evolving? How will the next generation of designers work? What will they make? What new areas of human experience is design opening for us? Now that designers can do almost anything--what should they do? The Publisher has two cover versions for this title. The books will ship with either a black or white cover. The interior contents are the same.
