Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bilingual English/Romanian Guide (Ghid bilingv engleză/română) Bucharest offers some excellent attractions, and during the recent years has cultivated a sophisticated, trendy, and modern sensibility that many have come to expect from a European capital. Perhaps the most prominent landmark is the Palace of the Parliament, built in the 1980s during the reign of Communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. The largest Parliament building in the world, the Palace houses the Romanian Parliament (the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate), as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art. The building boasts one of the largest convention centres in the world. Culture in Bucharest, included within the whole Romanian culture, is a unique culture, which is the product of its geography and its distinct historical evolution. Romanians, (Proto-Romanians, including Aromanians, Megleno-Romanians, and Istro-Romanians) are the descendants of the ancient people indigenous to the Balkans, but have been Romanized. Bucharest has a growing cultural scene, in fields including the visual arts, performing arts and nightlife. Unlike other parts of Romania, such as the Black Sea coast or Transylvania, Bucharest's cultural scene has no defined style, and instead incorporates elements of Romanian and international culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have experienced such enormous developments in different fields of science and technology, sending Space Shuttles to outer space and discovering the microscopic germs hidden in the textures of the elements; A Melody Called Peace is here to make such progresses in the very core of our hearts and to remind us once more that literature and art can bridge the souls of strangers and bless them with the sweet taste of peace and love. This book is the result of a massive international collaboration between poets, authors and artists from different parts of the world who answered the invitation call of the messengers of peace and civilization, we, the authors and participants, believe that peace is the result of the reconciliation of the opposites and poetry - in its simple but rich form - and has the ability to convey the genuine and common concerns of all humankind living in different parts of the world while they hold different beliefs. A Melody Called Peace, like a big and glamorous lantern, shines the light once more on the shadows which have tarnished the beloved peace; the melody of dozens of poets and authors will fondle the hearts of the residents of the world, reminding them of this famous phrase: Nil Desperandum! And finally, Gloria in altissimis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis!

As modern-day sleeper services are being resurrected across European rail networks, this book looks at the complex organisation that was required to run their forbears, with sleeping cars with clean bedding and conductors and dining cars with food and drink were in the right place at the right time across many different nations, systems and time-zones.

'A witty and page-turning narrative full of grotesque characters' Misha Glenny 'Will leave you astonished, exhausted and curious... An unapologetic page turner' Spectator 'Essential reading for anyone interested in Romania past and present' John Simpson 'An engaging introduction to the rich history [of Romania]' New Statesman Balanced precariously on the shifting fault line between East and West, Romania's past is one of the great untold stories of modern Europe. The country that gave us Vlad Dracula, and whose citizens consider themselves descendants of ancient Rome, has traditionally preferred the status of enigmatic outsider. But it has experienced some of the most disastrous leaderships of the last century. After a relatively benign period led by a dutiful King and his vivacious British-born Queen, the country oscillated wildly. Its interwar rulers form a gallery of bizarre characters: the corrupt and mentally unbalanced King Carol; the fascist death cult led by Corneliu Codreanu; the vain General Ion Antonescu. After 1945 power was handed to Romania's tiny communist party, under which it experienced severe repression, purges and collectivisation. Then in 1965, Nicolae Ceau?escu came to power. And thus began the strangest dictatorship of all.

Book excerpt: Olivia Manning: A Woman at War is the first literary biography of the twentieth-century novelist Olivia Manning. It tells the story of a writer whose life and work were shaped by her own fierce ambition, and, like many of her generation, the events and aftermath of the Second World War. From the time she left Portsmouth for London in the mid-1930s determined to become a famous writer, through her wartime years in the Balkans and the Middle East, and until her death in London in 1980, Olivia Manning was a dedicated and hard-working author. Married to a British Council lecturer stationed in Bucharest, Olivia Manning arrived in Romania on the 3rd September 1939, the fateful day when Allied forces declared war on Germany. For the duration of World War Two, she kept one step ahead of invading German forces as she and her husband fled Romania for Greece, and then Greece for the Middle East, where they stayed until the end of the war. These tumultuous wartime years are the subject of her best-known and most transparently autobiographical novels, The Balkan Trilogy and The Levant Trilogy. Olivia Manning refused to be labelled a 'feminist,' but her novels depict with cutting insight and sardonic wit the marginal position of women striving for independent identity in arenas frequently controlled by men, whether on the frontlines of war or in the publishing world of the 1950s. However, she did not just write about World War Two and women's lives. Amongst other things, Manning published fiction about making do in Britain's post-war Age of Austerity, about desecration of the environment through uncontrolled development, and about the painful adjustment to post-war British life for young men. As the author of thirteen published novels, two volumes of short stories, several works of non-fiction, and a regular reviewer of contemporary fiction, she was a visible presence on the British literary scene throughout her life and her work provides a detailed insight into the period. Grounded in thorough research and enriched by discussion of previously unexamined manuscripts and letters, Olivia Manning: A Woman at War is a timely study of Olivia Manning's remarkable life. Deirdre David integrates incisive critical analysis of Manning's writing with extensive discussion of the historical contexts of her fiction.
