Book excerpt: The father of Eric Edgar Cooke despised his baby son from the moment he saw him. Bashings and a hate-filled childhood followed for the boy with the crooked mouth, launching a personality unique among serial killers. He stalked the city of Perth for months, shooting strangers in the dead of night and using a sickening variety of weapons to steal the lives of strangers. Unknown to the terror-stricken citizens of this trusting, emerging metropolis, the young father of seven children who pulled the trigger had for years been doing other sinister night work. In a remarkable twist of fate, the killer's life tangled with that of 19-year-old John Button, whose 17-year-old girlfriend was killed. Both men confessed to that crime. This riveting investigation into the life and untold crimes of the last man to hang in Western Australia reveals new evidence to indicate that at least one innocent man, John Button, went to jail for one of Cooke's murders. Estelle's efforts to clear John Button's name, have led to the West Australian Court of Criminal Appeal re-opening the case against John Button after nearly 35 years. The new edition will include a chapter covering the case and the final decision.

Book excerpt: The gripping stories of ordinary Germans who lived through World War II, the Holocaust, and Cold War partition—but also recovery, reunification, and rehabilitation Broken Lives is a gripping account of ordinary Germans who came of age under Hitler and whose lives were scarred and sometimes destroyed by what they saw and did. Drawing on six dozen memoirs by Germans born in the 1920s, Konrad Jarausch chronicles the unforgettable stories of people who not only lived through the Third Reich, World War II, the Holocaust, and Cold War partition, but also participated in Germany's astonishing postwar recovery, reunification, and rehabilitation. Bringing together the voices of men and women, perpetrators and victims, Broken Lives offers new insights about persistent questions. Why did so many Germans support Hitler through years of wartime sacrifice and Nazi inhumanity? How did they finally distance themselves from the Nazi past and come to embrace human rights? The result is a powerful portrait of the experiences of average Germans who journeyed into, through, and out of the abyss of a dark century.

Book excerpt: Lawrence Stone's trilogy on marriage in early modern England has been widely praised. The New York Times Book Review hailed the first volume, Road to Divorce as "sure-footed and fascinating commentary" and chose it as a Notable Book of 1990. Christopher Hibbert in the Independent found that the "absorbing and often extraordinary" stories in volume two, Uncertain Unions "throw a clear, bright light not only upon the making and breaking of marriages in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, but also on social customs and the intimacies of private lives." Now, in Broken Lives, the third and final book, Stone sets out to examine the various ways people ended marriages and the lengths to which they would go to do so. Drawing from a massive archive of court cases, Stone presents stories that paint a revealing portrait of divorce in the period before 1857. Divorce could only be obtained by Act of Parliament, and often at great expense and with much difficulty. As Stone writes, however extreme the circumstances, the legal breaking of a marriage on the grounds of cruelty was not easy to obtain in seventeenth-century England. For instance, in Boteler v. Boteler, Anne Boteler, wife of Sir Oliver Boteler, had overwhelming evidence of her husband's abuse (which included death threats and physical attacks on Anne and her children). Yet even though Sir Oliver's own relatives testified against him, it took Anne three years to obtain a legal separation. Of course, in some instances, the wife had the upperhand. In Lovedon v. Lovedon, we see an instance in which a wife could repeatedly appeal her husband's suit for divorce at his expense. By law, Edward Lovedon was obliged to pay all of his wife Anne's bills until they were officially divorced. And in Beaufort v. Beaufort we learn that women would often successfully countersue their husbands for divorce on the grounds of impotence--in those days, it was more than likely that a man would fail the public test he underwent to prove his virility. Other cases reveal intriguing and often spiteful aspects of marital breakdown: servants blackmailing their adulterous masters and mistresses; and husbands suing their wives' lovers for property damage (i.e. to the wives' bodies). One of the world's leading authorities on the history of the family, Lawrence Stone has mapped the arduous routes which people took to break marriages--from private separation agreements to Parliamentary ruling. And as he does so, he provides a fascinating glimpse into daily life and marital conduct, and allows us to eavesdrop on the testimony and conversations of men and women of all sorts and conditions--from the serving girl to the served--in the changing social world of early modern England.

The second image was a sexual depiction. I don't know where it came from, but as far back as I can remember, I had always associated the name Dante with a beautiful and sexy man. I'd imagined a dark-haired, dark-eyed, gorgeous lothario, the type who could capture a woman's heart with just one look. Dante was the Fabio of my generation, the heartthrob that got women's hearts beating fast, made us want this man to rip our clothes off and to throw us onto the bed. Little did I know that the Dante that walked into my life was very different from the one I'd imagined. Oh, he was dark-haired, dark-eyed, gorgeous, even a lothario ... just ... he wasn't a man. He was a fifteen-year-old boy who was going to send me to the Hell his namesake had written about. And I was his teacher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a dark departure from our standard picture of whistleblowers, C. Fred Alford offers a chilling account of the world of people who have come forward to protest organizational malfeasance in government agencies and in the private sector. The conventional story—high-minded individual fights soulless organization, is persecuted, yet triumphs in the end—is seductive and pervasive. In speaking with whistleblowers and their families, lawyers, and therapists, Alford discovers that the reality of whistleblowing is grim. Few whistleblowers succeed in effecting change; even fewer are regarded as heroes or martyrs.Alford mixes narrative analysis with political insight to offer a frank picture of whistleblowing and a controversial view of organizations. According to Alford, the organization as an institution is dedicated to the destruction of the moral individualist. Frequently, he claims, the organization succeeds, which means that the whistleblowers are broken, unable to reconcile their actions and beliefs with the responses they receive from others. In addition to being mistreated by organizations, whistleblowers often do not receive support from their families and communities. In order to make sense of their stories, Alford claims, some whistleblowers must set aside the things they have always believed: that loyalty is larger than the herd instinct, that someone in charge will do the right thing, that the family is a haven from a heartless world. Alford argues that few whistleblowers recover from their experience, and that, even then, they live in a world very different from the one they knew before their confrontation with the organization.

Book excerpt: In 1994, the genocide against the Tutsi was taking place in the small central African country Rwanda: Approximately 1 million Tutsi were killed within 100 days, mostly in a bestial way. Judence, a Tutsi 11 years old at the time, experienced this bloody massacre and luckily survived. Only now, after many years, she can talk about the events of that time and come to terms with her past. She courageously goes public with this book and describes in moving words her experiences, which touched her deeply, influenced and shaped her future life. For her to come to terms with the events, there can only be the path of understanding and forgiveness. However, "I cannot forgive as if nothing had happened. That is not possible. I therefore leave it behind me", is her emphatic message. The book ends with an appeal to all genocide survivors to continue documenting the story of the genocide against the Tutsi so that it will be a lesson for future generations.

Book excerpt: In this compelling psychological thriller, the battered corpses of three young students are found between Tower Bridge, Borough Market and the Shakespeare Globe Theater, warning a London already struggling with fear of terrorist attacks. The investigation is entrusted to the promising Italian-British detective of Scotland Yard, Sonny D'Amato, who must stop the serial killer before the list of the dead gets longer. The clues lead to investigating old cases of child abuse that may have triggered a weak, suffering mind. Sonny D'Amato will most likely get the promotion that he feels deserving, but without being able to rejoice. In fact, his soul will be hostage to the pain that extends plentifully from this sad and infamous inquiry that will make him lose sight of the difference between the victim and the executioner. Because, as Alexander Solgenitsin wrote, "the line separating good from evil crosses the heart of everyone".

After ten years of marriage and six weeks after ordination, Steve found his marriage and ministry in shambles. Saddled with thoughts of unworthiness, he left the ministry for four years and focused his energies into finding the reasons for his downward spiral. The book starts with the beginning of divorce-marriage. Helping others find the reasons for their feelings in divorce he chronicles his thoughts and actions alongside valuable help for those like himself wondering if they have failed God. Broken Vows Shattered Lives has been used in counseling with other believers and is the basis for A Journey Through the Land of Divorce led by Dr. Mentzer. This book and seminar serve the express purpose of helping those hurting Christians to know the graciousness and love of the Father once again. Emotional pain is so powerful and damaging, but even when we are in that dark pit, we need to look to God to light our way. Dr. Mentzer used the principles in Broken Vows Shattered Lives to teach me how to know God more intimately, and how to find hope, healing and love through Jesus Christ. The lessons shared by this godly man can help anyone recover from their brokenness by trusting in God's words. The wisdom in these passages has been a gift for me, and one that has continued to bless me in many ways, throughout the years. Sherry B. Chesapeake, Virginia Dr. Mentzer's book provides a thoughtful, insightful, and useful tool for those who have experienced the pain of divorce and for those who counsel families in crisis. T. McClain, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist Wheeling, West Virginia

Book excerpt: In her startling collection of short stories, Broken Lives and Other Stories, Anthonia C. Kalu creates a series of memorable characters who struggle to hold displaced but dynamic communities together in a country that is at war with itself. Broken Lives and Other Stories presents a portrait of the ordinary women, children, and men whose lives have been battered by war in their homeland. Written in response to the Nigerian Civil War, known on the Igbo side as Ogu Biafra--the Biafran War--this collection focuses on the everyday conditions of the local people and how their personal situations became entangled in national crises. The stories capture a diversity of issues, from the implications of self-rule and the presence of soldiers among civilians, to masquerades, air raids, and rape. Through her riveting narratives, Kalu draws the reader into the depths of some of Africa's most troubling issues, such as the concern for safety during the frequent outbreaks of hostilities, which can range from civil unrest to armed combat. How do young people, women, and the elderly cope during those crises? Are the struggles for national political power greater than the everyday struggle for decent living by the person on the street? While conveying the vitality and joy of Africa's women and youth, Broken Lives and Other Stories also examines the impact of the brain drain caused by wars and instability within the continent itself. Both the war against women and women's constant war to survive in contemporary Africa are brought into sharp focus throughout these stories. For readers interested in the last thirty-five years of unrest across Africa, this collection is essential reading.

Book excerpt: The numerous studies of Maxine Hong Kingston's touchstone work The Woman Warrior fail to take into account the stories in China Men, which were largely written together with those in The Woman Warrior but later published separately. Although Hong Kingston's decision to separate the male and female narratives enabled readers to see the strength of the resulting feminist point of view in The Woman Warrior, the author has steadily maintained that to understand the book fully it was necessary to read its male companion text. Maureen Sabine's ambitious study of The Woman Warrior and China Men aims to bring these divided texts back together with a close reading that looks for the textual traces of the father in The Woman Warrior and shows how the daughter narrator tracks down his history in China Men. She considers theories of intertextuality that open up the possibility of a dynamic interplay between the two books and suggests that the Hong family women and men may be struggling for dialogue with each other even when they appear textually silent or apart.

Book excerpt: The Simple Power of a Broken Life serves to bring meaning to and ultimately healing from the suffering and pain that accompanies the broken seasons of our lives. Drawing upon the brokenness of seven individuals from the Scriptures and their respective pain, a picture of hope and usefulness emerges that serves to begin to make sense of the mysteries, betrayals, rejections, heartaches, and disappointments that we all eventually come into contact with in one form or another. Not only do we each matter to God, but our brokenness actually sets us apart as being more likely to be used to impact other lives. Being fully convinced that God uses broken things, we find that our brokenness is the starting point in a deeper, more intimate experience with God. Broken lives may experience a beautiful and simple power in the midst of their pain and suffering that the Father can use as a rich blessing for other wounded souls. My strong desire is that the purpose of your pain and the healing of your heart will lead you into deeper waters of God's grace than you have ever known before and that multitudes of people will be helped on their journey because of your brokenness. Here's to believing that the simple power of your broken life will gloriously transform both you and all the lives God wants to touch through you!

Book excerpt: From the survivor of ten Nazi concentration camps who went on to create the New England Holocaust Memorial, a "devastating...inspirational" memoir (The Today Show) about finding strength in the face of despair. On August 14, 2017, two days after a white-supremacist activist rammed his car into a group of anti-Fascist protestors, killing one and injuring nineteen, the New England Holocaust Memorial was vandalized for the second time in as many months. At the base of one of its fifty-four-foot glass towers lay a pile of shards. For Steve Ross, the image called to mind Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass in which German authorities ransacked Jewish-owned buildings with sledgehammers. Ross was eight years old when the Nazis invaded his Polish village, forcing his family to flee. He spent his next six years in a day-to-day struggle to survive the notorious camps in which he was imprisoned, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Dachau among them. When he was finally liberated, he no longer knew how old he was, he was literally starving to death, and everyone in his family except for his brother had been killed. Ross learned in his darkest experiences--by observing and enduring inconceivable cruelty as well as by receiving compassion from caring fellow prisoners--the human capacity to rise above even the bleakest circumstances. He decided to devote himself to underprivileged youth, aiming to ensure that despite the obstacles in their lives they would never experience suffering like he had. Over the course of a nearly forty-year career as a psychologist working in the Boston city schools, that was exactly what he did. At the end of his career, he spearheaded the creation of the New England Holocaust Memorial, a site millions of people including young students visit every year. Equal parts heartrending, brutal, and inspiring, From Broken Glass is the story of how one man survived the unimaginable and helped lead a new generation to forge a more compassionate world.
